A Comparative Analysis of Critical Thinking in Western And Islamic Education: Implications for Contemporary Islamic Pedagogy

Critical thinking is an important skill in education, but its conceptualization varies across Western and Islamic paradigms. This study aims to compare the concepts, criteria, and objectives of critical thinking in Western and Islamic education. The research method used is a qualitative literature study by examining primary and secondary sources from Western and Islamic studies, and analyzing them systematically thematic. The main findings reveal that Islamic critical thinking "tafakkur" and "ulul albab” integrating reflection “rational-religious (al-Diny al-Aqlany)” because in it there is tadabbur and tadzakkur, while Western critical thinking emphasizes “rationality-progressivism”. Critical thinking aims to enable a person to understand themselves, their environment, and their world, so they can make good decisions, solve problems, and produce something new. Meanwhile, in Islam, purpose tafakkur and ulul albab is "ma’rifat”. Ma’rifat is the knowledge of knowing Allah, knowing oneself, knowing the world, and knowing the afterlife. In Islam critical thinking is not only sharp mind, but also sharp awareness of the heart so that it becomes wiser. Although critical thinking from a Western and Islamic perspective tends to differ in concepts, criteria, and objectives, integration between the two is very important. Synergy between Western and Islamic education is needed to design a holistic curriculum that is responsive to the challenges of contemporary Islamic pedagogy

The Filter Bubble: Consumption Gen Z of Da’wah Content on YouTube

    No full text
Indonesia, as a multi-religious country with the largest number of Muslims in the world, is a country that adheres to a democratic system of government by always holding elections. However, issues and hoaxes about religion in election contestation are often raised as topics in political campaigns, especially through social media, which have the potential to trigger conflict. At the same time, the penetration of social media use by Gen Z as novice voters can be said to be relatively high. Today, the popularity of social media YouTube for Gen Z is a priority reference for accessing information related to religion. Ironically, this phenomenon indicates the existence of a filter bubble that limits the opportunities for Gen Z's exploration of religious issues. This picture encourages researchers to find out the existence of a bubble filter of da'wah content on social media consumption—YouTube on Gen Z. Using new media, bubble filters, and da'wah content as a theoretical framework, this research uses a case study research method involving 3 informants who are Gen Z with their respective religious interests and preferences. The findings of this study reveal that the existence of bubble filters as consumption of YouTube da'wah content on Gen Z is real. Gen Z has consumed da'wah content through YouTube for an average of 1-3 hours per day so that the content history appears homogeneous (homophily). YouTube as a crucial platform for users to enhance their religious awareness has been considered an important means for users to increase faith, expand knowledge, and gain inspiration, especially through da'wah content such as short studies, Prophet stories, and short lectures. However, the filter bubble phenomenon makes users only exposed to content that matches the interests and views of social media users, thus reducing the diversity of information received. Moreover, the bubble filter can narrow perspectives and create an isolated community, where users only interact with people who share similar views, limiting opportunities for dialogue with dissenting views

This study aims to examine the influence of inner peace on the dynamics of conflict experienced by university students, including both intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts. The research employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design. A total of 82 students participated, selected through purposive sampling, consisting of 35 students residing in Islamic boarding schools and 47 non-resident students. The Inner Peace Scale, covering the aspects of acceptance of loss, inner balance and calmness, and transcending hedonism and materialism, was tested on 438 students and produced 19 valid items based on Pearson correlation validity and a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability score of 0.764. The Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS), tested on 35 students, resulted in 15 valid items with a reliability of 0.914. The Interpersonal Conflict Scale, adapted from the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode, yielded 29 valid items with a reliability of 0.932. Normality testing using the Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal data distribution. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that inner balance and calmness had a significant positive correlation with intrapersonal conflict (r = 0.437; p = 0.009), while acceptance of loss had a significant negative correlation with interpersonal conflict (r = -0.433; p = 0.009). The regression analysis showed that the model significantly explained intrapersonal conflict (R² = 0.361, p < 0.001), with two dimensions of inner peace having significant effects: inner balance and calmness (β = 0.665, p < 0.001) and transcending hedonism and materialism (β = -0.489, p = 0.002). For interpersonal conflict, only the acceptance of loss dimension showed a significant negative effect (β = -0.364, p = 0.033). These findings suggest an opportunity to reinforce empathic and transformative communication approaches, emphasizing both conflict resolution and the personal transformation of those involved in the conflict

Implementation of the Independent Curriculum set by the government raises a number of challenges in the field, especially those related to teacher and school readiness. This curriculum demands a comprehensive understanding from educators and school officials, especially at the elementary school level. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection through observation, interviews and document analysis. The data analysis process includes stages of reduction, presentation and drawing conclusions. The research results show that the readiness of teachers in Padangsidimpuan City public elementary schools in implementing the Independent Curriculum is at a fairly good level. This is reflected in the teacher's ability to understand the main components of the curriculum, including lesson planning, implementation of the teaching and learning process, and learning assessment. Teachers also demonstrate adequate understanding of learning tools, such as legal foundations, learning objectives, media, learning models, and supporting facilities and infrastructure. This readiness is supported by teachers' active participation in various professional development programs, such as training through the Merdeka Mengajar Platform (PMM), seminars, webinars, workshops and In House Training (IHT). Apart from that, teachers are able to develop open learning modules, implement differentiated learning in class, and carry out evaluations according to the Independent Curriculum guidelines

The Role of Islamic Law in Addressing Global Warming: Perspectives from Indonesia and Global Contexts

    No full text
This study examines the role of Islamic law in addressing global warming, focusing on case studies from Indonesia and Western contexts. As emphasized by Indian scholar Mukherjee A, climate change has emerged as an escalating global threat driven primarily by human actions such as excessive fossil fuel consumption, deforestation for industrialization and urbanization, and rapid population growth. These activities accelerate global warming and permanently disrupt ecosystems, leading to significant human suffering. Within Islamic jurisprudence, the principle of Fiqh al-Bī’ah (Islamic environmental jurisprudence) provides both a moral and legal foundation for maintaining ecological balance. Classical Muslim scholars emphasize stewardship (khilāfah) and accountability (mas’ūliyyah) as ethical imperatives guiding human responsibility toward nature. In the contemporary context, Islamic law extends these principles through maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, particularly the preservation of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs) and nature (ḥifẓ al-bi’ah), which demand sustainable and responsible engagement with the environment. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) alongside an analysis of classical Islamic works, examining 578 scholarly papers to ensure comprehensive coverage. The Miles and Huberman framework, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, was applied to guide the data analysis. The findings reveal that Islamic law offers both normative and practical mechanisms for mitigating climate change: (1) strengthening Fiqh al-Bī’ah as a legal-ethical response, (2) promoting ecological citizenship within Society 5.0, (3) enforcing robust environmental regulations and local capacity building, and (4) integrating technological innovation with sustainable practices. The study concludes that Islamic law provides a holistic ethical and legal foundation for environmental stewardship, harmonizing traditional jurisprudence with modern sustainability initiatives to address global warming both globally and locally
