International audienceThis paper offers a dynamic transcription of the opening lines of Chapter XIV of Jacques Rivière's posthumous novel, Florence. Left unfinished by the sudden death of its author, this novel, published in 1935 by Isabelle Rivière, was a bone of contention between the writer's widow and the team at La NRF, led by Paulhan and Gide. Chapter XIV, the last chapter in its current form, has two versions that take the text in two very different directions. The dynamic transcription of the evolution of Rivière's writing provides a better understanding of the issues at stake. It will be supplemented by a textometric study.
International audienceThis paper examines the effects of generative AI on creative writing, both in practice (works created with AI) and in teaching this practice at university. It presents possible approaches to AI (Artificial Intelligence & Creativity: A Manifesto for Collaboration, Journal of Creative Behaviour, in particular), reviews some examples of achievements, and presents the ANR Cré@lame programme, which aims to study the processes of literary creation in order to supplement language models with writing models and thus create or improve writing assistance tools.
Role of the turbulent burning in the quenching limits of gaseous detonation confined by an inert compressible layer
International audienceThe role of deflagrative burning in the quenching limits of gaseous detonation confined by an inert compressible layer was investigated using two-dimensional numerical simulations incorporating a source term to model a deflagrative burning. A simple closure model for the source term was proposed, inspired by the propagative form of the mass fraction transport equation, and activated when temperature is below the crossover temperature. Go/No-Go results were collected from simulations with varying mass fluxes and reactive layer heights. The inclusion of the deflagration source term significantly extended the propagation limit beyond predictions from the ZND model and classical inviscid reactive Euler simulations, while accurately reproducing the experimental observed critical height. These findings highlight the pivotal role of deflagration in the dynamics of detonation near the limit
Creep and Tensile Properties of Waspaloy Produced by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing
International audienceThe creep and tensile behavior of Waspaloy, a γ′-strengthened nickel-based superalloy, processed by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing using Cold Metal Transfer (WAAM–CMT) was investigated for repair applications. Mechanical properties of the bulk material were assessed up to 850 °C in both the As-Built (AB) and Post-Weld Heat Treated (PWHT) conditions, with particular attention to the effect of the loading direction. The AB microstructure consisted of large columnar grains with ultra-fine γ′ precipitates and serrated boundaries pinned by carbides, providing considerable hardening despite being out-of-equilibrium. PWHT promoted γ′ coarsening and secondary carbide formation, enhancing yield and tensile strength to levels comparable with coarse-grained wrought Waspaloy. A shallow heat-affected zone (300 to 600 µm) was identified, and digital image correlation analysis of strain localization confirmed the good mechanical strength of the interface. Tensile testing revealed weak anisotropy (< 9 pct) in strength, with AB samples exhibiting higher ductility. PWHT was particularly efficient at elevated temperatures, enabling properties equivalent to fine-grained wrought Waspaloy. Creep testing showed in situ aging and an initial contraction in the AB material. PWHT improved creep resistance at 700 °C to 750 °C but degraded performance at 800 °C to 850 °C, with strong anisotropy in creep life and strain at rupture. These findings establish WAAM–CMT as a promising repair technique for aircraft components
Gradient damage model for simulating thermo-mechanical coupling: application to composite material degradation
International audienceThe use of composite materials is widespread in structures where weight reduction is essential while maintaining high stiffness and strength properties. However, these materials are flammable, increasing fire risks. It is generally observed that heat flux transforms sound composite material into char, leading to the degradation of mechanical properties and a modification of initial thermal properties. Nevertheless, the influence of microstructural heterogeneity on thermal degradation, as well as the coupling between thermal degradation and mechanical damage, remains underexplored in the literature. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of mechanical and thermal degradation mechanisms on physical phenomena such as heat transfer, thermal decomposition, and cracking. The study aims to simulate the interaction between different degradation modes and their kinetics to assess their mutual impact on the material’s behavior at the microstructural scale. To achieve this, a rigorous thermodynamic approach is adopted, introducing internal variables corresponding to each physical phenomenon, as well as their gradients. This modeling approach combines two methods: on the one hand, a phase-field gradient model is employed to describe thermal degradation, which evolves according to an Arrhenius law. This method is suitable for simulating phase transition phenomena and interface motion in a non-homogeneous material. This approach introduces a degradation gradient term to characterize the interface energy between degraded and sound regions, allowing the influence of microstructural fluctuations to be considered. On the other hand, a gradient damage model based on the principle of virtual powers distinguishes the thermodynamic forces associated with the reversible process, derived from free energy, from those associated with the irreversible process, derived from the dissipation potential. This modeling choice avoids issues related to damage localization and mesh dependency. By coupling these two approaches, it becomes possible to simulate the interaction between mechanical damage and thermal degradation of the material. The results show that, on the one hand, charred regions become areas where damage and cracking are easily initiated due to the degradation of mechanical properties. On the other hand, damaged or cracked zones act as thermal barriers, delaying heat propagation. Indeed, the presence of cracks reduces thermal conductivity in these regions, thereby limiting the advancement of the thermal front
Alloy Reorganization and Dynamics in Group-10-Metal–Gallium Nanoparticles under Reactive Atmospheres: Impact on Local Environment and Reactivity
International audienceBimetallic nanoparticles are catalysts for reactions such as COx hydrogenation or propane dehydrogenation. Recently, gallium has been identified as a promoter, which enables dispersion of transition metal sites, increasing their activity and selectivity. However, quantitative information on alloying dynamics under reaction conditions is not readily available, and a general computational method to access such information is lacking. Here, an ab initio molecular dynamics workflow with enhanced sampling methods is used to probe the alloying behavior of Ni-, Pd-, and Pt-Ga nanoparticles under operating conditions (T = 600 °C) in the presence of H2 or CO. The three metals display different alloying behaviors with Ga: Ni forms a core surrounded by gallium, while Pd and Pt form different alloyed structures. Both H2 and CO shift the alloying states to different extents. A set of three descriptors is then proposed to compare and quantify the alloying behavior of these catalyst models: (i) the position αmin of the most stable alloying state; (ii) the curvature η of the free energy at αmin, referred to as the alloying hardness; and (iii) the skew κ of the free energy at αmin, which relates to its propensity to alloy or segregate. The cost of alloy reorganization, which correlates with alloy hardness, is a major part of the free energy barriers of propane dehydrogenation. Since the alloying behavior of a catalyst is a critical parameter that is overlooked in catalyst design, quantitative descriptors are the first step in designing alloys with set catalytic properties
