This part is based on the literature reviews of the related studies. Get PDFGood social capital development allows for discussions to explore what makes a self-sustaining settlement by the locals. This kind of discussion includes the opportunity to speak out and to be part of a development process that is involved in the local settlement. However, many issues have been identified towards making sustainable community developments a success, especially in settlements with high heritage values. This paper seeks to devise solutions to issues identified with regard to development occurred in Kuala Terengganu. Knowledge of these issues may provide a useful guide for future social capital developments in a place with high heritage values
Place Attachment and Future Regeration of Tourist Attraction Areas in Kuala Lumpur City Centre
Get PDFThis paper discusses visitors' attachment to historic tourism places in Kuala Lumpur city in the context of urban regeneration. The study found that despite having a short duration of visits, the visitors' functional and emotional attachment to attractions was fairly strong. Future place regeneration has been linked to the physical improvement and preservation of historic places. The visitors have identified strongly with the cultural image and the need to experience the places with comfort. Sustainable urban regeneration requires an understanding of place attachment reflected in the relationship between people and the destinations that goes beyond the attractive image of tourism places
Association between Common Space Occupancy and Spatial Configuration in Japanese Nursing Home
Get PDFThis paper explores the association between common facility space occupancy and spatial configuration and aims to have higher space occupancy by spatial design. The spatial configuration includes geometric metrics and topologic metrics from Space syntax theory.The association between space occupancy and spatial configuration in twelve nursing homes is evaluated using the multiple linear regression model. The results show that spatial integration, connectivity, and area size are significant factors to space occupancy correlation. Therefore, allocating space with higher spatial integration, more connectivity, and the large area size are three effective ways to increase space occupancy in Japanese nursing homes.
What are Users' Perceptions of the Hospital Courtyard Garden and How Satisfied are they with it?
Get PDFSince the 1970s, courtyard gardens with diverse scales and design configurations have been introduced in the planning of Malaysian public hospitals to enhance users' experiences. However, these have never been systematically evaluated to understand of how they perform and what improvements can be made to them to increase their responsiveness to users' needs and inform the practice of both hospital designers and managers. This paper presents the results of fieldwork conducted in a large central courtyard in a Malaysian public hospital. Get PDFTasek Bera (TB), one of the Protected Areas (PA) in Malaysia is an important site for the natural ecosystem and community's life. Previous studies suggested that the activities around the PAs gave a great impact on the latter. Thus, the implementation and management of the surrounding areas Buffer Zones (BZ) are necessary to safeguard the PAs. This study interviewed in-depth, six stakeholders of TB and the adjacent areas. Micro Scale Environmental Characteristics and Fear of Crime
Get PDFThis study investigated the relationship between crime, fear, and micro-level physical environmental features: physical incivilities, places that afford concealment (or refuge), limited prospects, and blocked escape. Low and high crime streets in Istanbul, Turkey were determined. Then 68 streets were selected via cluster random sampling and evaluated by two investigators at the site and by 127 people via photographs for perceived safety, upkeep (as an indicator of physical incivilities) the extent to which they afford wide vista (prospect) and easy escape and concealment opportunities, the density and height of trees, shrubs, and walls. Results supported the theory and the findings of previous empirical studies
