The Use of Multi-Sensor for Illegal Human Settlement Detection
The paper presents preliminary results of legal and illegal settlement extraction in Pulau Gaya, Sabah using high resolution Quickbird and SPOT- 5 multi-spectral imageries using automated house detection techniques. The technique developed is spatial-based using tree counting approach. From the results, edge to edge of the house features was found to be precisely separated and can be delineated between houses that are less than 2m distance. Results show that the technique able to delineate legal houses from Quickbird image more than SPOT-5. Differing results would be due to different spatial and spectral resolutions of images
Modeling the Impacts of Local Factors for Healthcare Building Energy Performance Improvement in Thailand
This research aims to perform, compare, and evaluate Integrated Building Design (IBD) processes, collaborating the Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Building Performance Simulation (BPS) applications to perform energy analysis and to improve the building energy performance of a Generalizable Building Design (GBD), a universal application on health care facilities design in Thailand. The IBD processes produce the simulation results in a harmonious direction. Slight variation in building orientation could alter the extent of energy consumption. The integration of the three measures could minimize energy consumption greatly. The study addresses the limitations of the IBDs in the software integration processes
Towards Prevalence of Negeri Sembilan Malay Traditional Architecture for Future Communities: Misconceptions
Negeri Sembilan's unique identity is facing gradual disappearance endangering future generations' identity's ownership as well as cultural and built environment quality due to such misconception. This paper seeks to present the findings of a comprehensive literature review which then tested by a perception survey. The literature review is part of the research activities aimed in unravelling the authenticity of Negeri Sembilan traditional houses. The research methodology was qualitative. This paper enables an understanding of apparent misconceptions and is an important milestone in ongoing research towards preserving the Negeri Sembilan architectural identity for our future communities in facing environmental challenges

Land Covers and Climate Impacts on Land Surface Temperature in Putrajaya, Malaysia
This study investigates the influence of surface heterogeneity on land surface temperature (LST). The land cover changes evaluation and historical climate data comparison were used in this study. Land cover, Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalised Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) and LST maps are produced to quantify the impacts of urbanization towards the surface thermal behaviour. Urbanization was set in the year 1999 to 2006. While urbanization continued in 2009, the surface temperature was lower than in 2006. The sea level was notably high during 2006, suggesting the loss of ice extent and evident to the climate change effects. Therefore, the fluctuation of temperature from 1999 to 2009 was manifestly influenced by green space and climatic response and was not solely caused by urbanization
The Influential Image of Nighttime Urban Public Park in Forming Place Identity
The design of urban public park is an important factor which influence urban community leisure. The objective of this study is to investigate the community perceptions on nighttime leisure activities in urban public park. The questionnaire survey is done in Padang (green field) located in the urban center of Shah Alam and Putrajaya using random stratifies technique. There are four types of variable studied related to nighttime leisure in an urban public park namely comforts, conveniences, safety and nighttime leisure. The findings from this study are expected to show a positive perception of nighttime leisure in urban public park towards urban community
Muslims in Georgetown World Heritage Site: Cultural and socio-economic sustainability
Georgetown World Heritage Site (GWHS) is known as a potpourri of various ethnic groups who have settled in the area during various periods of the past 300 years. Chinese are the majority although Muslims (Malays) were the earliest settlers and once the majority. This paper analyzes the socio-economic and cultural sustainability of the Muslim community within the GWHS relying on historical records and the current situation. Areas around masjid kapitan Kling and masjid Melayu are considered as Muslim enclave. While the Indian Muslims are doing rather well socio-economically, the same cannot be said of the Malays. The number of Malays is very low and Malay business owners in the area tend to live outside the GWHS. The decline of the Muslim population has grave implications for the socio-economic and cultural sustainability of Muslims, especially the Malays
Behavioural Adaptation of Malay Families and Housing Modification of Terrace Houses in Malaysia
This paper examines the behavioural adaptation of Malay families living in terrace houses with regard to the activity system, privacy and social interaction among Malay families and terrace housing modification. The study uses case studies of 11 Malay families living in three-bedroom two-storey terrace houses in two urban locations in Malaysia. Findings indicate that behavioural adaptation resulted in changes in some aspects of the Malay culture and housing modifications provided a more supportive living environment but have adverse effects on individual families and the housing communities due to the constraints of the terrace housing design
Spatial Connectivity of Indonesian Shop Houses
Given the very high variety of self-built shop houses in Indonesia, this paper unfolds the pattern of the shop house layout through its spatial connectivity. The method of Hillier and Hanson (1984) is modified and used to discover the type of connectivity and its effect on the functional spaces. By analyzing samples from Chinese & Javanese settlements in Yogyakarta, the result shows that the spatial connectivity of the Chinese shop houses has the inclination of direct connectivity than the Javanese. This may assume that in Chinese shop houses the access to the rooms is more strictly controlled and circulation is more regulated than in Javanese shop houses. Further results also show the distinct characteristic differences that are inward/outward orientation, multi-unit/single-unit, linear/cluster organization, and closeness/openness
Block Level Social Contacts in Low-Cost Flats
This study evaluates the spatial properties of flats blocks, where daily social interactions often take place, in order to identify socially encouraging layouts. It attempts to establish any significant relationship between the spatial properties of flats layouts and the local network of social relations among the residents. It employed network mapping to measure social contact sizes and utilized syntactical software to compare visibility and integration levels of various flats configurations. Findings showed a possible relationship between flats' spatial properties and the size of social contacts
