Landscape Features and Traditional Streets Character in Malaysia
Get PDFThe aim of this paper is to explore the landscape features that contribute towards the character of a successful traditional street environment. The case study was conducted on three streets in Melaka Historical City, namely, Tukang Besi Street, Tukang Emas Street and Tokong Street. Mixed-method was used in this study that involved visual survey, direct observation, user perception (questionnaires, in-depth interviews and mental mapping) and an in-depth interview with policy-makers. The result shows that landscape features can be characterized into two main categories: appearance and function
Promoting Sustainable Urban Neighborhood towards Walkability
Get PDFClimate change is a widely accepted fact. Urbanization and industrialization are the main cause of climate change phenomena all around the world. One of the main problems of urbanization is the increase in the growing dependence on automobiles. The main modes of transportation even in the neighborhood area are private cars because it is the norm for urbanites to use motorized vehicles rather than walk. This shows that the planning and design of the neighborhood itself can influence the walkability of the housing area. This paper highlights the implication of walkability towards promoting sustainable urban neighborhood
Adaptability of Folkways: Buddhist Thai vernacular houses of Songkhla Lake Basin
Get PDFThis research has explored the relationships between community ecosystems and folkways in the context of modern development, especially how these relationships are manifested in the changing physical characteristics of their vernacular houses. Using qualitative methods and a holistic approach to study tradition and change, three Thai-Buddhist communities around Songkhla Lake Basin were selected for comparative study. Data were derived from documentary sources, direct and participant observation, in-depth interviews and architectural drawings. It was found that the traditional communities in different local micro-ecosystems were transformed to be a new characteristic of Southern Thai dwellings underlying the emergence of a hybrid economy and society. However, kinship ties, their Buddhist beliefs and their experience of adaptability reinforce the existence of local identities
Residents' Satisfaction with Public Housing in Hulhumale' Area of Male', Maldives
Get PDFThis paper examines the residents' satisfaction with public housing in the Hulhumale' area of Male' in the Maldives, with a focus on physical features, the provision of services, public facilities and the social environment in the housing area and their contributions to residents' overall housing satisfaction. The findings show that a majority of the residents are only slightly satisfied, though satisfaction levels are generally higher for the provision of services and public facilities, compared to the satisfaction with physical space in the housing unit and the social environment in the neighbourhood. The study infers that merely providing housing does not ensure the success of housing development and policies in the Maldives
Analysis on Level of Safety Performance and Occupants' Satisfaction in Low Cost Housing
Get PDFThe general building conditions in low-cost housing are part of human quality indicators. However, there are rising issues in the safety performance of the housing since the occupants are inclined to perceive safety hazards. Therefore, this paper explores the concept of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as a safety performance tool. This research conducted a survey on safety performance and occupants' satisfaction in 24 numbers of low-cost housing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The correlation result shows that safety performance has a significant relationship with occupants' satisfaction. The findings supported the application of POE as a tool for safety performance
Impact of Outdoor Environments on the Quality of Life
Get PDFThe characteristics of the outdoor environment in urban spaces and morphology distress the quality of life (QoL) of urban dwellers and visitors. The main purpose of this study is to develop an extensive hypothesis on the parametric evaluation related to the adaptation of the urban environment and dwellers' QoL by methodical literature review, field observation and proposal on an alternative design strategy. The parameters include microclimate, urban space and traffic, waste management and other influencing factors that are desired to envisage for effective investigation. Factors play a key role in the variation of QoL and instinctively affect the dwellers' approach and comportment.
The Shaping of Knowledge: Communication of meaning through museum exhibition design
Get PDFThe primary objective of museum management in the shaping of knowledge can be achieved by a communication of meaning through quality displays of the permanent collection or temporary exhibitions, the specimens of a continent or the interactive apparatus of science. This paper looks at research derived primarily from museum scholars and experts with academics working in the field of visitor studies towards developing exhibits that facilitated visitor learning. These findings recast the approach in order to offer an integrated framework for visitor behaviour that has implications for service management of the service encounter at the museum in Malaysia
Focus Group Discussion on Youth Participation in Vertical Housing Neighbourhood Space
Get PDFFocus group discussion series was set up at the vertical housing of Kerinchi People Housing Project, Lembah Pantai with two different groups in separate venues and times. The analysis was done by using Atlas.ti after transcribing and coding the audio-taped discussion, searching for networking on youth participation. The findings show youth demand indoor space compared to outdoor space due to open space inadequacy and absence of space quality yet lost the sense of belonging. Furthermore, the residents' committee neglected youth participation in the decision-making process or meeting with the committee has resulted in the youth not participating in the community actively
Conservation Challenges of Heritage Building Reuse in Nigeria: A review of decision-making models
Get PDFAfrican countries including Nigeria are enriched with heritage properties embraced with legacy and architectural values depicting a sense of identity. They deserve to be conserved for future generations. However, the properties are continuously ignored and destroyed due to redundancy and injudicious decision. Hence, this paper aimed at reviewing decision-making models adopted mostly in developed countries for possible suitability in developing countries. Meta-analysis was conducted where eight decision-making models were deduced. The practical implications and limitations of the models were acknowledged. The findings were appropriately reviewed and harmonized to suit and enhance optimum quality of conserving heritage assets in developing countries
Applicability of Malaysian Standards and Universal Design in Public Buildings in Putrajaya
Get PDFThis paper discusses ongoing research on universal design implementation in public buildings in Putrajaya with the applicability to Malaysian Standards of accessibility. The areas of study include disability and accessibility issues, the current accessibility system in Malaysia, Malaysian Standards and universal design implementation in the built environment, and the importance of public buildings in Putrajaya. Site observation involving facilities measurement and photographic documentation was conducted in five significant public buildings in this city.
