Factors Influencing the Visit to the Courtyard Gardens in Public Hospitals in Malaysia
Get PDFIndividuals mental health and well-being are significantly influenced by being in a natural setting and viewing nature. Hospital courtyard gardens (HCG) is a common feature found in public hospitals in Malaysia. Nevertheless, the factors influencing the visitation and non-visitation to the HCG are less understood. This study attempts to investigate factors influencing the visit and non-visitation of patients, staff and visitors to the HCGs in three Malaysian public hospitals. The research findings are instrumental to the architects and landscape architects to make necessary improvements for future HCG design and the hospital managers to enhance and retrofit the existing HCG
Pruning Urban Trees without Skill: An act of unintentional vandalism
Get PDFTree pruning provides various benefit but also a source of multiple types of tree damage due to unskilled pruning practices. Cohen's vandalism typology state that persons who have similar characteristics to those present in poorly skilled work (i.e., unintentional act; maintenance equipment damaging a tree structure) perform "vandalism". This study aims to explore the relationship between unintentional vandalism and unskilled pruning practices in tree maintenance by analysing qualitative and quantitative data from the tree workers contracted by selected Malaysian local authorities and tree care experts. Results showed that insufficient tree pruning knowledge leads to unintentional vandalism in tree pruning practices

Aligning the staff for work-from-home (WFH) schedules requires proper human resource planning for employee satisfaction and continued organizational performance. The paper provides empirical evidence on an institutional study on employee satisfaction and performance while working from home. Also, other variables on ICT usage and internet accessibility formed the foundations for further discussions on workforce alignment. Recommendations on the viability of WFH after the pandemic crisis will be described
The Landscape Strategies and Usage of Laman Tun Perak as a Pocket Park in Kuala Lumpur
Get PDFPocket parks emerged as a rational solution to allow access to urban parks within the constraint of limited space. Although small in scale, they are treated as valuable urban green and community assets. Attention and studies on pocket parks are rare, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Hence, the research explores and attempts to determine the landscape strategies of Laman Tun Perak and identify how the pocket park is being utilised. Observation, field notetaking, drawings analysis, and interview are methods employed. The research concluded that the landscape strategies of a pocket park are connectivity and permeability, safety, comfort, and activities
Assessing Play Equality in Malaysian Public Playground through Universal Design Principle
Get PDFThe outdoor play setting is often ignored as a viable place to accommodate children with disabilities, limiting or completely excluding them from playing like other ordinary children. Thus, this study aims to determine the integration of Universal Design (UD) qualities and the applicability of Malaysian Standard (MS 966; 2017) in Malaysia's public playground. The physical site observation process has been conducted at three (3) public playgrounds for children with disabilities in Malaysia. The findings showed that there are 8 components of the UD principle, and MS966:2017 has been violated in the playground design
Design Principles for Secure and Sociable Local Community: Case study - Chizar

In this paper, we discuss social aspects of sustainability emphasize that a local community center should include security and sociability concepts. Therefore, the objective of the paper is finding suitable design principles that could increase these two concepts. The methodology of the article is survey and case study. The selected site is CHIZAR local community in Tehran. The paper will conclude that some design principles such as diversity in function, visibility, Attractive Street frontages and stay area increase security and sociability concepts
On the Same Skywalk in a Time of Pandemic: How a vulnerable group copes with the new conditions in Hong Kong
Get PDFThe public space plays a crucial role in providing adequate infrastructure for vulnerable social groups in the context of high-density urban Asia. In this study, a well-known elevated pedestrian network in Hong Kong emerges as a revelatory case for the comparative analysis of the pattern of stationary uses before and after the COVID-19 pandemic out-break. Findings reveal a significant decrease (-20 %) in the total number of users and a shift in the pattern of activities, comprising a significant shrinkage of socially oriented uses and a vast increase of individual behaviors. A Classification of Japanese Nursing Homes on the Spatial Layouts of Common Facilities: An analysis using Space Syntax Theory
Get PDFThis article analyzes the spatial layout in Japanese nursing homes, and to clarify the core space and spatial characteristics of the common facility. By using the Space Syntax DepthMapX tool, we analyzed 62 nursing homes from Japanese architecture publications. Then, we use the spatial integration metric to identify the core space and transition of the common core facilities. The result shows the core space changed from the corridor in the 1980s to the hall nowadays; the community space and physical training room have also become the common core facility in Japanese nursing homes
Sustainable River: The role of non-structural measures and public outreach programmes
Get PDFThe pollution level in the Klang River is high. The state government is working to address this issue. The study aims to determine the sustainability of the river through non-structural interventions and public outreach initiatives. Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Klang Local Council (MPK), and Shah Alam Local Council (MBSA) provided a total of 82 accessible data. The river community and completed an adapted questionnaire. The persons in charge of river cleaning in related sectors. For the study, SPSS Version 22.00 is used to analyse data. The finding showed that Cross-sectoral Collaboration (CSC) and Public Outreach Programme (POP) significantly roles on Sustainable River Cleaning
