Daylighting and Readers' Satisfaction: Raja Tun Uda Public Library, Shah Alam
Designing a library study environment is important to the mood, motivation and performance of individuals because interior design plays an important role in human mood and social behaviours. Lighting, as a control architectural tool, gives important influences on users' perception behaviour and visual comfort in libraries. A public library in Shah Alam was chosen as the main subject. The result found that library users prefer seats near daylighted areas, but the time spent in the library is not really affected by daylighting. Besides visual comfort, daylighting is not the only contributor to overall comfort and user satisfaction
Conservation Planning Guidelines and Design of Melaka Heritage Shophouses
Melaka shophouses are now threatened by urban development which involves the conversion of the image and the changing of the urban fabric. The aim of this study was to clarify conservation issues in Melaka and to review building design and its influence which involves the aspect of site and facade typology. However, the focus should not only be on the building facade but should also take into consideration the environmental factors that lead to building defects. 7his problem identified could be overcome by comprehensive conservation planning and design study guidelines in order to (come up with) detailed articulations for conservation guidelines of Melaka Shophouse
Towards a Refined New Concept of New Urbanism in Egypt
This paper introduces a method to apply the principles of New Urbanism in an Egyptian neighbourhood unit. It extends to their relationship with the common dimensions of urban design. It proposes four objectives: a) Interpret the new concepts of New Urbanism, b) Cite principles of Urbanism and trends emanating from it, c) Discover the structure of the philosophical concept of urbanization and d) Design a matrix inventories the compatibility of the principles of New Urbanism and urban design dimensions. Finally, the matrix tests the combination of the principles and the dimensions in a traditional Egyptian urban fabric, Basilica Church Plaza
The Authenticity of the Former Mining Landscapes of Kinta Valley, Malaysia
Kinta Valley in Perak State is one of the richest valleys arising from 18th-century tin mining production in Malaysia. The physical evidence of this production that surrounds Kinta offers a cultural landscape narrative about this tin rush era that occurred from 1884 to 1895. This paper investigates the heritage significance of Kinta Valley's former mining landscape through the lens of cultural landscape theory and practice. Through a detailed case study, documentary research and site observation have been applied as qualitative methods for data collection to unravel and quantify the heritage values of the Kinta Valley's former mining landscape
Urban Green Space Growth Impact on Surface Temperature Distribution
Trees and vegetation play a vital role to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) effects. Land use, vegetation growth detection and land surface temperature (LST) maps of two different dates are generated from Landsat 5 TM (1991 and 2009) in the city of Shah Alam. The conversion of natural green areas into residential and commercial development significantly increases the LST. The result reveals that mature trees in urban green spaces help to mitigate the effects of UHI as well as to sustain the urban development
Nature as a Stimulating Learning Environment for Design-based Students
Stimulating design base students in an appropriate learning environment is crucial in motivating the students to produce creative works. Refreshing atmosphere with full of green, natural topography and comfortable micro-climate are considered ideal criteria for the learning environment, which is also the core of sustainable design. The research attempts to investigate the importance of the natural environment to design students, based on the analysis of observation and questionnaire surveys. For a preliminary study, the research analysed three samples of design schools in Selangor, Malaysia. Findings indicate that students prefer having a natural environment in the surrounding, and it can stimulate the student's creative process
A Review of the Construction Techniques of Rumah Kutai, Perak
Rumah Kutai in Perak is amongst the oldest surviving traditional Malay house and is gradually disappearing from the indigenous cultural landscape of Malaysia. The subject of the research is construction techniques of the traditional Malay houses which is emphasized on the indigenous house of Perak, Rumah Kutai. This research, basically exploring on how Rumah Kutai is being constructed from the beginning until the end. Also, to examine the construction techniques, especially on the jointing system (tanggam) of several components in Rumah Kutai. The research aims to study the construction techniques of traditional Rumah Kutai
Internationalisation of Healthcare: A fairer approach for local patients
Malaysia is among the selected countries for medical tourism due to its excellent healthcare services. Nevertheless, there are concerns if service providers are balancing the local and foreign patients' healthcare demands due to the similarities and differences in their behaviour on these two groups. Through literature analysis, it is found that the lack of discussion on medical practitioners' behaviour towards local patients, this paper aims to analyse that unhealthy behaviour towards local patients is profound. Hence, the discussions are hoped to spark the policy-makers' attention in restructuring the healthcare policy to realign the medical practitioners' behaviour in both patient groups
Environmental Characteristics of Children's Neighborhood Activities
Environmental characteristics affecting children's physical abilities and health are worth understanding. The purpose of this study is to identify neighborhood environmental characteristics that influence children's activities and assess the friendliness of Taiwanese communities toward children's activities. Conditions are observed on the basis of five environmental characteristics: safety, amenity, accessibility, sociability, and attractiveness. The three communities studied have different combinations of street patterns and land use which, in turn, are conducive to different children's activities. These findings are valuable for community design aimed at promoting children's activities
Preschool Children Preferences on their School Environment
Children and adults have different views and preferences about the environment around them. Digital camera pictures offer tangible documentation and representations of children's perceptions and preferences regarding their school environment. This study is to identify children's photography selection and preferences in the school environment, both indoors and outdoors. This study was conducted on 19 preschoolers (n=19) ages 4 and 5 using the project-based approach. The children were given a digital camera and were asked to take pictures of things in their school environment that they really liked. Their photographs were analyzed to see their overall preferences for their school environment
