Influence of Recreational Facilities among Adolescents towards Leisure Time Physical Activity (LTPA)
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to identify the influence of recreational facilities towards leisure physical activities among youth. As many as 913 respondents aged between 13 to 17 years old from four districts (Seremban, Muar, Kota Star and Kuantan) in Peninsular Malaysia, were chosen through a layered cluster random sampling technique. The results show that the safety of the environment is at a moderate level (busy road: M=3.51, SP=1.31; stray dog: M=3.46, SP=1.38; crime: M=3.23, SP=1.33) and it has no connection with the involvement of youths in LTPA (r=-0.01, p>0.05). It is also discovered that sports facilities limit them from undergoing physical activities during leisure hours. However, facilities are easy to be used (75%) by youths and this leads to a significant relationship with LTPA (r=0.10, p<0.05). The implication of this research shows that the physical environment is pivotal in order to increase the level of youth involvement in overall free time physical activities. Thus, it is suggested that these physical activities can only take more of the teenagers' time if they are carried out in environments which are creative, comfortable, safe and user-friendly
Bridging the Gap between Planning and Environmental Psychology: An application of sense of place for visioning of public policy
Get PDFThis paper aimed to explore a new methodology for vision-making and sharing in a local municipality. The study explored using the residents' sense of place as a key element of the vision for the local town in order to ease the conflict or discomfort that can arise among diverse populations of merged municipalities. A method named Visioning with Sense of Place was developed for this study. Analyses identified that the visioning process stimulated the participants to develop a broader sense of place in the new town

To achieve this, it is important to address crimes and disorders in residential areas. So far studies identified that changes in the built environment and modifications in space design can impact residents' and offenders' perceptions of criminality. Various CPTED measures are employed to create defensible space. This paper examines the effect of physical design on the occurrences of crime in Taman Melati residential area of Kuala Lumpur City and tests the effects of the built environment on the possibility of crime reduction through physical planning measures
Children Walking to and from School in Tehran: Associations with neighbourhood safety, parental concerns and children's perceptions
Get PDFNowadays, children are more likely to use motorized transportation modes to go to and from school. This paper focuses on examining the relationship between neighbourhood safety and primary-aged children walking to and from school on their own; across different socio-economic areas in Tehran. Self-reported parental and children surveys and urban design measurements were used to determine the influence neighbourhood safety factors have on the choice of children's school transportation mode. The results reveal that parents and children with negative perceptions of neighbourhood safety tend to use motor vehicles or to escort their children while walking to and from school
Children's Participation in Library Space Improvement Programme
Get PDFThis paper illustrates a physical improvement programme in a primary school library through a participatory process involving children in designing and renovating the space. The improvement of library space has contributed positively to promoting children's active use of the library space. The involvement of children in the process has also promoted their positive attitude and sense of belonging toward the space. Commitment to building the whole school community becomes a challenge during the process and beyond. Promoting children's active role in the development, management and maintenance of the space become important to ensure sustainability after the programme
Place Attachment and Continuity of Urban Place Identity
Get PDFThis paper focused on place attachment and its significance in defining place identity with reference to three main shopping streets in the city center of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Place identity refers to the identification of emotions and feelings about a particular place and the distinctive characteristics of the place in which human-place bonding is developed. The weakening of place identity has been identified as one of the urban design issues for contemporary cities. This paper identified the issues concerning place identity; concepts of place and place attachment constructs, the identification of place attachment constructs and place attributes that could be used as assessment indicators for future redevelopment of local urban places. A questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted to examine place attachment and to identify the characteristics of the places that exerted influence and would then benefit in terms of securing place identity which in turn sustained attraction and thus brought greater economic and tourism advantages to the city
Paediatric Wards: Healing environment assessment
Get PDFMalaysian paediatric wards were assessed on their quality status and design trends towards the creation of a healing environment. The objective was to promote best practices in design. Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) studies were conducted in paediatric wards in eight hospitals in the Klang Valley. The methodology adopted was the use of the UK's NHS AEDET and ASPECT Evaluation toolkits, which evaluated the physical qualities and staffs & patients satisfaction levels respectively of 215 nurses and 217 patients. Results seemed to show the disparity between the positivity of the physical design in relation to users' satisfaction. Implications of the findings are discussed
Users' Perceptions of Shopping Activities in the Historic City of Malacca
Get PDFThe intent of this paper is to discuss the survival of the shophouses in the historic city of Malacca based on the research on the perceptions of the users, site observation and available documents. The findings of the research suggested that the shophouses were the most visited places. The users had both positive and negative perceptions of the shophouses in terms of comfort, circulation and other aspects that relate to shopping activities. The information can be used as a guide to ensure the continued use of the shophouses as the setting for current and future activities
Children, Youth and Road Environment: Road traffic accident
Get PDFDriving is a complex process which involves eye-hand-foot coordination. Failure to coordinate will contribute to road traffic accidents (RTA). Young drivers usually represent the highest number of individuals involved in accident cases. Thus, three common ergonomics principles were examined in this study: human-machine-environment. Issues such as land use, vehicle design and the importance of law enforcement are briefly discussed. Further research is needed to improve drivers' behavior and responses while driving. Strict enforcement of legislation and early education on road safety is required. It is also suggested that developing countries should refer to the preventive model used in developed countries for reference
