Common Space Spatial Layout Transition in Japanese Nursing Home - By Space Syntax point of view
Get PDFThis article analyzes changes in common space spatial characteristics in Japanese nursing homes in the past 35 years and aims to provide a reference for future common space design. The analysis is done by using the Space Syntax theory. Totally 62 nursing homes from Japanese architecture publications are selected and analyzed. The analysis shows that compared with classical large-scale care nursing homes, the spatial integration of community space in modern unit care nursing homes is increased by 15%, but service station and dining rooms are reduced by about 10% and 13%, which indicates the spatial importance of community space in modern nursing homes
Social Cohesion of the Malaysian Cul-de-sac Neighborhoods: Brief critical review of concepts

The consideration of a better neighbourhood design is currently only evident in curvilinear and organic planning designs of neighbourhoods such as the cul-de-sac. The objective of this paper is to identify concepts of the cul-de-sac neighbourhoods and the community’s social cohesion through a critical review of available literature within the framework settings of a Malaysian pluralistic neighbourhood. The paper is anticipated to lead to methodological assessment processes of the physical environment and neighbourhoods as well as expand existing contextual knowledge of the Malaysian cul-de-sac neighbourhoods
Sustainability of Buildings in Historic City of Malacca
Get PDFThe paper discusses the sustainability of the buildings on the western side of the Historic City of Malacca with the help of the implementation of conservation policies. It covers the historical background, the role of the local government and the responses of the local residents. The methodology includes site observation, building study, literature review and interview. The findings of the research suggest that the buildings within the area are well-sustained but some local residents gave negative responses. Some strategies are needed to ensure the continuous use and sustainability of the buildings

Community Activities and the Impacts on the Environment at Krau Wildlife Reserve, Malaysia
Get PDFProtected Areas (PAs) are significant for ecosystem and communities. Studies suggested that land use activities carried out by the community surrounding the PAs could increase the pressure to the latter. Thus, this study is to identify the land use activities carried out by them, and to ascertain its spatial impact towards KWR. This study chooses a RS techniques and ground verification using GPS. The readings confirm that there are land use activities performed by the communities, mostly on flat and less at hilly and undulating areas. Large scale plantations and encroachment are the major impact on the KWR.
Influencing Characteristics for Housing Product in Jakarta Metropolitan Area
Get PDFThis research paper will try to analyze the relationship between influencing characteristics for housing product prices in Jakarta Metropolitan Region. The aforementioned characteristics are viewed from the property practitioner's perception. To find the answer to this research paper's questions, seven property practitioners were interviewed to test the initial hypotheses. The findings suggest that brands, facilities, developer reputations, pricing policies, reinvestment values, and speculative behavior play significant parts as internal and external attributes for housing prices in Jakarta Metropolitan Region
Mass Concentration of Airborne Particulates in Selected Museums at Kuala Lumpur and Perak Darul Ridzuan
No full textIndoor pollutants gives harmful effects on human health and became the main cause of cultural heritage deterioration. The research focuses on the airborne particulates in indoor museum galleries. Equipment used to sample inhalable dust was the 7-hole sampler and the Cyclone sampler for sample respirable dust. The results show that mass concentrations at the selected location were exceeding the limit of safety Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Malaysia's standard limit for TSP and PM10 in 8 hours of sampling. Thus, it is important to control the level of contaminants within the buildings for safety purposes
Park Structures as Determinant of Bird Species Diversity in Putrajaya
Get PDFThe presence of birds is important to verify ecological condition in cities since they respond well to the availability of habitat structure. This study aims at investigating park structures which influence bird species diversity in Putrajaya. The studied areas consist of six metropolitan parks. Vegetation structure and bird species data were collected through distance sampling method. Evaluations of overall 12 points were carried out to be mapped in the Standard Computer-aided Design (CAD) software. The results reveal that park with higher density vegetation supports higher habitat variables including food, foraging substrate and nesting site for birds to survive in Putrajaya.

Sustainable Life and Social Development through Universally Designed Environment
Get PDFA universally designed environment provides comfort, adaptability and flexibility that can help to reduce human life cycle impact and encourage residents' participation in the community. With that, the purpose of this conceptual study is to explore the concept of Universal Design (UD) as a significant aspect of social sustainability, based on professional practitioners' and scholarly views. UD implementation in a built environment may cater for the needs of diverse users over the changing abilities throughout their lifespan. Accommodative Study of Public Space for Marginalized People
