Application of Rasch Model in Constructing Walkability Indices for Urban Neighborhood Area

    Get PDF
Physical attributes for walkable urban neighbourhoods required a summary of indices. The development of indices is based on the hierarchy of walking need theory which applies dimensions of accessibility, safety, comfort and pleasurability. The aim of this research is to construct indices of physical attributes by detecting differential item functioning (DIF) based on respondents' demographic factors and their perceived environment. The findings using the Rasch model have dropped 16 items and maintained 20 items that are reliable to gauge the 4 dimensions. This research could be used to obtain indices in a just manner and become an indicator for a walkable urban neighbourhood model

Interrogating Vitality of the Streets in two Cypriot Towns

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the issue of vitality in urban public spaces, streets in particular, as a major indicator of their success and as one of the determinants of livable cities. The study first provides a theoretical framework for understanding the social value and role of urban public spaces in the quality of urban life. Second, it discusses essential components of vitality in streets. Finally, it investigates vitality and its determinants in two main streets in Famagusta and Kyrenia, in North Cyprus. The paper highlights some issues such as proper connection and proximity to important magnets, along with physical and social attributes in the street area

Amelioration of Urban Temperature through Landscape Design Approaching Hot-Humid Climate: A Review

    Get PDF
This paper discusses a conceptual review of sustainable landscape design approach as mitigating strategies to modify urban temperature in a hot- humid climate. The amelioration of urban temperature through landscape approach can be achieved by incorporating sustainable landscape design practices via the interplay of natural vegetation in the hot-humid tropics. The findings of this paper are hoped to guide the practitioners in landscape architecture, policy makers and urban designers to incorporate sustainable landscape design approach towards improving outdoor thermal comfort; thus providing a better quality of life

Extension of Time Claim Assessment in Malaysian Construction Industry: Views from professionals

    Get PDF
This paper aims to investigate the current practice of extension of time claim assessment by contract administrators and identify difficulties faced by them during the assessment process. Findings from the questionnaire survey revealed that poor factual evidence and flaws in claim presentation are the principal factors leading to delays in the assessment process. The findings imply that efficient contract administration and well-organised record-keeping will lead not only to successful project management but also will increase the chances of a successful contractual claim. These findings are expected to offer a significant contribution to industry players, researchers and also academics, thus helping to identify areas for further improvement

Development of Urban Green Space Affects Neighbourhood Community Social Interaction

    Get PDF
While Malaysia is heading for urbanization, urban green space degradation had occurred. Malaysia's typical urban green space had shown the demotion of social interaction among urban residents. Hence, this research aimed to understand the designs of typical Malaysian green spaces which are believed to enhance community social interactions. Variables measured were the physical and natural characteristics of selected green spaces including activities, attractions and settings. The observation took place during representative weekdays, weekends and public holidays in those green spaces. The result suggested that the diversity of subspaces including vegetation density, animal populations, undulating landforms and water bodies afford social interaction behavior

Industrialised Building Systems (IBS): It's attribute towards enhancing sustainability in construction

    Get PDF
A comparative study was conducted between IBS construction and conventional wet construction to compare performances in terms of time, cost, quality and utilization of manpower. Four low-rise building projects which adopted IBS and conventional methods of construction were selected for case studies. The findings suggest that construction using interlocking blocks and prefabricated systems can reduce the overall cost, time, and manpower and produces better quality housing than the conventional method.  Environmentally, IBS also facilitates waste minimization and reduction, thus further highlighting its positive economics, while reductions in overall manpower requirements may also bring about less dependency on foreign labour

Sense of Community in Gated and Non-Gated Residential

    Get PDF
Neighbourhood design is one of the factors contributing towards the establishment and maintenance of local community ties. The differences in environmental size and design of neighbourhoods are perceived to influence sense of community networking functions. A physical element such as gated element is also believed to have an influence on local community relationship networking. Therefore, a study on sense of community was conducted in two neighbourhood areas: Putrajaya (non-gated) and Bandar Baru Bangi (gated) using face to face interview method. This study found that residents of non-gated residential areas demonstrated higher sense of community (M=6.47 SP=0.08) than residents of gated residential areas (M=6.39, SP=1.08)

Success Factors for Initial Works of Industralised Building System Process of Projects Implementation

    Get PDF
The absence of success factors focusing on the Industrialised Building System (IBS) process of project implementation initiates this study. Therefore, the aim of this research is to establish the success factors within the initial works of the IBS process of project implementation. A comprehensive literature review revealed that success factors are; the management, the government policies and initiatives, the coordination between design and construction, and the technical aspects of project deliverables. Questionnaire survey distributed amongst G7, IBS contractors unanimously agreed on these as success factors for the initial works of the IBS process of project implementation

    Barcelona towards Sustainability

    Get PDF
This paper describes two main aspects of environmental management in Barcelona; city mobility and waste management. The observation is documented through hard evidence of photographs, local authority database and information accessible to the public. This paper is divided into three sections; 1) current urban planning and management 2) the sustainability and environmental approaches governed by the city 3) personal thoughts and experiences overlooking the general attitude and culture of the people of Barcelona. The lessons learned can be applied to Malaysia in an organized locality
