Quantitative analysis of microbial growth in selected meats before and after spoilage due to change in temperature
Get PDFUpton Sinclair wrote The Jungle over ninety years ago. This book exposed the failures of the United States meat packing industry which led to major modernization of the meat safety system. The beef and poultry industry make up about 66 percent of the total meat eaten by Americans. Due to many illnesses and deaths in recent years, the United States Department of Agriculture is announcing new measures to reduce harmful bacteria levels in products. Quality control and safety measures to protect consumers have been put in place by I • I the Food and Drug Administration. Consumers are warned of cross contamination and to III cook the meat thoroughly. The meat packers are now required to move pass the inspection of meat based on sight and smell. The meat packers regularly test the meat samples for contamination of E coli and Salmonella. This study analyzes the amount of bacteria found in ground beef as compared to ground turkey at various temperatures. A graphical illustration was used to show the differences between the amounts of microbial growth found in the ground beef as compared to the ground turkey. The statistical results suggest that the ground beef contained more microbial growth than the ground turkey
A comparative study of nursing and non-nursing majors knowledge and attitudes toward HIV and AIDS at the sophomore and senior level
Get PDFThe primary purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a baccalaureate nursing program on the knowledge and attitudes of United States nursing students towards HIV/AIDS. Mathematics and engineering majors were used as a comparison group and to control the threats to internal validity of history and maturation. Data for this study was obtained using an AIDS Knowledge Scale and an AIDS Attitude Scale in the form of questionnaires. A convenience sample of 103 students comprised of 30 sophomore nursing students, 34 senior nursing students, 16 sophomore Non nursing students and 23 senior non-nursing students was utilized. The sample was described using descriptive statistical measures such as means, frequency distributions, percentages and standard deviation. Inferential procedures such as analysis of variance, t-tests, and correlation were employed to analyze the data relative to the research questions. Data from the questionnaires were coded, entered into a database, and analyzed using SPSSPC. Findings include a significant relationship between knowledge of HIV/ AIDS and attitudes towards individuals with the disease. In addition, nursing students\u27 knowledge of HIV/AIDS increases as they progress in their program of study. There is a significant relationship between a student\u27s major and their knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Although the results of the ANOVA on the AIDS-attitude scale were significant, the LSD post-Hoc tests did not reveal a significant difference in attitudes towards HIV/ AIDS between senior nursing V students and sophomore nursing students. There was a significant difference in attitudes toward HIV/ AIDS between nursing and non-nursing majors. These results support previous findings such as Snowden (1997), that there is a relationship between nursing students\u27 knowledge of HIV/AIDS and their attitudes toward individuals with the disease
Policy priorities of the EPA: a proposed agenda and budget initiative
Get PDFThis paper summarizes priorities for the Environmental Protection Agency\u27s federal environmental policy agenda. Ten issue areas are investigated, and major issues, problems and proposals are addressed for each of the areas. The proposed policies range in scope from recommendations for research, new legislation and amending existing legislation to new regulatory approaches and changes in existing regulations. Each policy recommendation identifies environmental policy measures that deserve priority status and a rationale for each proposal. These measures include changes to existing policy, reaffirmation of important existing policies, and the elimination of unwise policies. The policy recommendations also state whether the proposals will require increases in the level of funding for the program area. The criteria by which the initiatives were chosen included public health, cost effectiveness, political feasibility, and economic growth potential. Also included is an EPA budget proposal that illustrates how the policy recommendations will affect the agency\u27s budget for the fiscal year. The budget begins with the funding allocated for the previous fiscal year and proposes adjustments for the upcoming fiscal year. A series of ambitious polices were formulated and adjustments to the EPA budget were proposed. The result is a complete policy agenda and budget initiative for the United States Environmental Protection Agency

In Achebe\u27s Things Fall Apart and No Longer At Ease and Morrison\u27s Sula and Song of Solomon, major characters reveal commonalities in their various relationships. Thus Okonkwo, Obi, Sula and Milkman engage in familial, spiritual and communal relationships. it is revealed that Africans and the African Americans have a bond, unlike the bond between a mother and child. Externally the people of each culture have been shaped by the circumstances of separate environn1ents. There is something internal, fundamental, and deep inside a place that cannot be touched by outside influence that makes these two separate cultures react to their environments in the same manner
