It uses four novels written by prominent African-American women to present the decline of moral values. Margaret Walker, in her novel Jubilee, set in the civil war era, presents a strong moral being in Vyry Ware Brown. Toni Morrison\u27s Nel Wright, in Sula, is slightly less moral than Walker\u27s Vyry. The decline in moral values begins with April Sinclair\u27s Coffee Will Make You Black and reaches its epitome in Terry Mclvlillan\u27s Waiting to Exhale. Identification and characterization of biological and volatile organic contaminants in indoor air in a governmental state office building
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to identify and determine the concentrations of targeted inorganic gases and total volatile organic compounds known to exist in indoor air spaces. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LADEQ) Office Building was selected because of a survey of occupants\u27 symptoms and perceptions of indoor air quality. Collected air samples were analyzed for selected compounds by way of United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) sampling procedures and methods that utilized drager absorption tubes and a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. The targeted compounds were nitrogen dioxide, dinitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), formaldehyde, and carbon dioxide. The results of this study indicate poor indoor air quality as a major factor influencing occupants\u27 symptoms. Within the scope of this research, findings indicate that the fresh air exchange rate in the building was too low. Exhaust fans were not working properly in the restrooms on floors three, four, five, and six -- causing the presence of 1,4-dichlorobenzene (a VOC) at concentrations ranging from 1 IO ppm to 125 ppm. Moreover, the high concentrations of carbon dioxide (500 ppm to 1500 ppm) gave additional evidence of an improperly working ventilation system being the cause of occupants\u27 symptoms. On the positive side, data from the present study, when compared to indoor air quality data collected by another investigator in 1997, showed a decreasing trend in the concentration levels of VOCs and carbon dioxide in the office building. After an overhauling of the heating and air conditioning system in the building, the average carbon dioxide concentration in the indoor air samples collected dropped from 1,157 ppm (before overhauling) to 743 ppm (after overhauling). Concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, dinitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide were found to be below detection limits. Except on the third floor where it was found to be 0.04 ppm, the concentration of formaldehyde was found to be below its detection limit. A concentration of 0.04 ppm, however, is below the dangerous threshold limit of 1 ppm for formaldehyde
A newspaper readership survey of African-Americans
Get PDFNewspapers in the United States have been a prominent source ofinfonnation for the public. Many Americans receive the information that is contained in the daily newspaper. However, African-Americans do not always benefit from the communication and news that the newspaper prints. Factors that contribute to the lack of readership among African Americans are common among the African-American community. Some ofthese depend on the income, age, and educational attainment of African-Americans. Other reasons that the Black community is not interested in reading newspapers are that they do not feel that newspapers contain information that is pertinent or important to them. The fact that many African-Americans own television or radios comes into focus also. This is a factor because Blacks would rather watch television or listen to the radio to receive the news. However, over 61% of African-Americans do read the newspaper on a daily basis
Effects of randomness and spatially dependent relaxation on sandpile models
Get PDFRandom deposition represents the simplest growth model. From a randomly chosen site over the surface, a particle falls vertically until it reaches the top of the interface, whereupon it sticks irreversibly. To include surface relaxation, we allow the deposited particle to diffuse along the surface up to a finite distance, stopping when it finds the position with the lowest height. As a result of the relaxation process, the final interface will be smooth, compared to the model without relaxation. In this research we investigate two types of randomness in the relaxation of sandpile models when the slop at some point becomes over-critical. In one type of randomness, the number of particles, nr, falling to its nearest neighbors in the resulting relaxation, is not constant but random, even though an equal number fall in each direction. We find that this kind of randomness does not change the universality class of the models. Another type of randomness is introduced by having all nr particles to fall in one single direction, but with the direction chosen randomly. We find that this type of randomness has a strong effect on the universality of the models
The relationship between family functioning and pregnancy among teens
Get PDFLittle is known about what makes teens experiment with sex earlier and earlier in their lives. These young girls are faced with the burden and responsibility of parenthood at a time in their lives when they are coping poorly with their own developmental tasks. The teen\u27s perception of family functioning may have a direct impact upon adolescent risk for pregnancy. This study investigated the relationship between family functioning and pregnancy among 13- to 19-year-olds using the Family Apgar Questionnaire. Although no significant difference between perception of family functioning and incidence of pregnancy was found, this study did conclude that age and ethnicity were factors related to teen pregnancy, for the sample studied

Get PDFAs the entertainment world explodes with the products of new technology and innovation, the difference between reality and fiction often times results in a blur. Computer graphics and story lines all encompass a real-life quality being sold to millions of consumers each day. A billion-dollar industry has resulted from the progress made by technology in the film, music, television, and movie industry. With the steps taken to create such real-life hardship, massacre, and unrest the question is how much have the technology and availability of products containing violent material affected society? Does the responsibility to monitor these products rely on the marketer or consumer? This study will determine the ethics and responsibilities of marketing and advertising and the cause-and-effect of certain techniques aimed at the influencing certain segments. The cause-and-effect will also determine if certain consumer segments are more enticed to purchase or view certain products material. An analytical view utilizing graphs, previous studies, and surveys will also aid in determining the relationship between the consumer and manufacturers when promoting violent material. This process was supported with a survey conducted between 100 college students. Fifty students were from a predominantly white university and the other fifty were surveyed at a predominately black university. The information captured from the segment will be used to analyzes the views and opinions of the college segment. The results were analyzed through an analysis of cross-tabulations of consumer demographics and percentage frequencies
