A quantitative analysis of the demand for pork in the United States (1966-1996)
Get PDFThe following study examines the trend in the demand for pork over the years from 1966 to 1996. The effect of pork price is used to quantitatively determine own-price influence in pork demand. The price of beef and chicken are used to measure the effects of these known substitutes on the demand for pork. Bread price is used as a complementary influence on pork demand. Finally, income and tastes and preferences are used to quantitatively measure their respective influence on the consumption of pork meat. Results showed that out of the prices of pork, 6eef, chicken, and bread; income; and preferences, only pork prices and preferences statistically significantly influence pork demand. Collectively, all of the aforementioned variables influence pork demand. Further, log-linear regression analysis reveals demand elasticities inconsistent with theory because of strong preferences. Pointedly calculated elasticities reveal that: ~ consumers barely respond to pork price changes, ~ beef and chicken are not clear substitutes, and ~ pork is a normal good. Producers would benefit by advertising possible health benefits of eating pork
Measuring the bunch-length of an electron beam by utilizing the laser heterodyne technique
Get PDFThe focus of this project was to develop an apparatus that would aid in measuring the bunch-length of an electron beam at the interaction point of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) by utilizing the laser heterodyne technique. This technique involves the superposition of two laser pulses of slightly different frequencies. As a result, a traveling fringe pattern is created, and a bunch-to-bunch variation of the Compton rate would be introduced. The magnitude of this variation depends on the best wavelength and on Fourier transform of the longitudinal bunch distribution. The laser heterodyne technique is implemented by the addition of a 1-km long optical fiber at the laser oscillator output. This produces a linearly chirped laser pulse with approximately a 4.5-A line width and 60-ps full width half maximum (FWHM). The pulse is amplified in a regenerative amplifier and tripled by two nonlinear crystals. A Michelson interferometer is used to superimpose light at two different frequencies, to create the fringe pattern. This method also utilizes a second interferometer in the far infrared to monitor the spacing of the fringe. The bunch-length is determined by analyzing the measured variation of the Compton Rate as a function of the mirror position in one of the interferometers

Stuttering : a paradoxical treatment
Get PDFStuttering is a universal speech disorder. Because of its universality, many methods to treat stuttering have gained fame through the years. These treatments have proven to be controversial. In the United States, two of the most controversial treatments as it pertains to the treatment of stuttering are those based on learning to stutter more fluently as opposed to those based on learning to speak more fluently. The basis of learning to stutter more fluently is teaching the stutter to understand the fal1acies of the speech skil1s that he already possesses. While the basis of the speak more fluently methods of treatment are immediate fluency. This study is a literary review of the of the research and treatment methods available to speech-language pathologists who treat clients with stuttering disorders. During the course of the study, the reader wil1 learn the definition and characteristics of stuttering, differences between the stutter more fluently and the speak more fluently approaches to stuttering therapy, and why the stutter more fluently approach has better long-term results

Application of ComCheck-EZ and ASEAM in energy consumption analysis
Get PDFAs required by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EP Act) each state must adopt energy efficiency standards for commercial buildings. Being that most university buildings were constructed prior to this act their structural components do not meet criteria. Therefore modifications must be made to bring these buildings up to standards. ComCheck-EZ can be used to determine the percentage of actual compliance with criteria and ASEAM can be used to determine expenditures in kWh of electricity, therms of gas and dollar amount. By using these software it is determined that the Clark Annex thoroughly passes lighting criteria and barely passes envelop criteria. Therefore recommendations are made and also used in ComCheck-EZ to yield passing criteria. The Physical Plant failed both lighting and envelope. Recommendations were made and tested in ComCheck-EZ and passing criteria was achieved. ASEAM was then used to model the actual amount of energy used per year along with the cost. Based on the identified ECOs (Energy Conservation Opportunities) it was determined that employing the modifications will bring the buildings up to standards
