    The relationship between African self consciousness and attitudes in heterosexual relationships among African American college students in two different settings

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between African Self-Consciousness and attitudes towards interpersonal relationships among African American college students, ending classes at a predominantly white university, Northwestern State University, and at a predominantly black university, Southern University. The ASC scale was used to assess the Black personality construct of African self-consciousness. The BHR survey was used to assess the subjects\u27 perceptions concerning heterosexual relationships. The findings support the hypothesis that ASC is directly related to whether the individual possesses Afrocentric or Eurocentric beliefs and attitudes. A direct relationship was found between environment and attitudes of the subjects in that, the environment either facilitated or distorted the level of ASC, resulting in the subject possessing either an Afrocentric or Eurocentric attitude, respectably

    Alcohol consumption among African American college students: implications for rehabilitation

    This study investigated the alcohol consumption and stress factors related to alcohol use among 1,475 African American college students attending three different historically black colleges and universities. The Assessment Questionnaire of Behavior Patterns and Stress in College Students was used in this research. Results indicated no significant gender differences in the frequency of alcohol use. However, considerable gender differences were found in getting high or drunk. Only slight differences in alcohol consumption were found for age. Data analyses revealed significant stress factors related to incidences of getting high and gender, particularly for males. Implications for university and rehabilitation professionals are indicated such as outreach programs, preventive awareness programs, counseling sessions, and workshops

    Estimation of parameters for calibration and validation of monochlorobenzene flux

    Research is currently being conducted to enhance the existing pump-and-treat remediation strategy at the Petro Processors, Incorporated site (PPI)-a petrochemical disposal site consisting of two locations in East Baton Rouge Parish (Louisiana). Monochlorobenzene, a biodegradation byproduct of hexaclorobenzene, is a toxic chemical prevalent at the site; the diffusivity of monochlorobenzene is being studied through desorption experiments. The objective of soil desorption experiments is to determine soil-water distribution or partition coefficients. Partitioning is the distribution of solutes between two phases such as solid phase and a liquid (aqueous) phase. The derivation of acceptable partition coefficients are used in [models] to determine the fate and transport of the contaminants at the site... in an effort to further phytoremediation studies [17]. Soil properties, such as bulk and particle density, are determined to describe the microenvironments of the contaminant. These properties relate the number of pores with the mean length a molecule of contaminant must migrate to reach the outer surface of a soil particle. The partition coefficient, the bulk density tell are MCB flux parameters. Flux describes the amount a contaminate migrates, in a given time, over the area in which the contaminant is exposed

    The relationships among racial attitude, racial preference and academic performance in African American children

    In this study, the racial attitude, racial preference, and academic performance were examined. The purpose of the study was to determine if relationships existed between racial attitude and racial preference, racial attitude and academic performance, and racial preference, and racial preference and academic performance. Racial attitude and racial preference were measured using the Children\u27s Racial Attitude and Racial Preference Test developed by Maxine L. Clark (1996). Teachers provided individual grades in math and reading to determine each child\u27s academic performance. There were 56 African American first-graders from a predominately Black elementary school in this study. The results revealed a statistically significant relationship between racial attitude and racial preference

    The Effect of Acute Exposure to Glyphosate on Reproductive Potential and Embryo Development of Pseudosuccinea Columella Snail

    Glyphosate (Roundup) is one of the most commonly used broad spectrum herbicides used with little to no toxicity to higher animals or the environment (Smith and Ochme, 1992). Due to its widespread use, there is a continuous contamination of the environment in both soil and water, with this herbicide. This study was developed to determine the effects of sublethal concentrations of glyphosate on development and survivability of Pseudosuccinea columella snails (intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica). This was assessed by acutely exposing third generation snails to varying concentrations (0.01-1ppm) of glyphosate. The snails were kept on artificial spring water to which doses of glyphosate were added and the laboratory in which water temp (22-25 0C) and photoperiod (approx. 12 hours of light) were unregulated. Abnormalities and polyembryony were observed in snails exposed to 0.01 and 0.1 ppm glyphosate. The results did not indicate that glyphosate affects the snails reproductivity and embryo development. The difference in generations used may play a factor in the fluctuation with these results. Hopefully in further experimentation, it may be proven that glyphosate affects the egg-laying capacity of Pseudosuccinea columella snails. This in turn, may influence the rate of infection of Fasciola hepatica in higher animals (mammals)

    Effects of lead nitrate contaminated soil on Tagetes erecta (marigolds)

    This study was developed to determine the effects of lead nitrate on marigold (Tagetes erecta) plants and to determine if these plants could phytoremediate or uptake lead nitrate from the soil. Phytoremediation is a low cost-effective means of reduction or removal of environmental contaminants by plants from the environment and is currently being investigated for many remediation applications. The objectives of this research were to: 1) determine the toxicity of lead nitrate on T. erecta by exposure of the plants to varying concentrations of lead nitrate (0.1-1000 ppm); 2) determine the effects of lead nitrate on the growth and development of T. erecta, by measurements of growth for the treated plants compared to the controls; and macroscopic observation of leaves, stems, and flowers; and 3) determine the uptake of lead nitrate from the soil into plant organs (leaves, stems, roots, and flower) by ICP analysis and analysis of soil for lead concentration by atomic absorption analysis. Results indicate that lead nitrate is not toxic to marigolds at concentrations of 0.1-1000 ppm. Changes in leaf coloration from green to yellow, and green to brown were observed. There were no significant differences in growth of treated plants compared to controls. Analysis of plant organs (root, stem, leaves, and flowers) showed that uptake of lead occurred in all of the organs with highest concentrations being observed in the roots (p\u3c0.05)

    The binding of selected xenoestrogens to an estrogen-binding fraction

    The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that effects of xenoestrogens may be mediated through a low-affinity estrogen-binding site. This low-affinity estrogen-binding site (EBS) is found in rat uterus. A second receptor, the Type I-(high-affinity-EBS). is also present in the uterus and other tissues. In order to obtain the estrogen-binding fraction-from the uterus, an ammonium sulfate (AS) fractionation was performed on rat-uterine cytosol. Two fractions were made, a 40% AS, which contained the Type I estrogen receptor (ER) and a 70¾ AS fraction that contained the low-affinity estrogen-binding site. These fractions were assayed for their ability to bind to xenoestrogens. Binding assays performed on the 40% and 70% fractions show that 21 % of the activity is contained in the low-affinity estrogen-binding fraction, whereas only 7% of the activity was found in the Type I ER. These percentages are similar to those reported in the literature. Further analysis shows that xenoestrogens bind to the low-affinity estrogen-binding fraction with high affinity and specificity. The ligands, diethylstilbesterol (DES), bisphenol-A (BPA), and endosulfan (ENDO), were assayed for their ability to bind to the low-affinity estrogen-binding fraction. DES and BPA were shown to displace.,50% of the estradiol from the receptor. The ability of BPA to bind to the estrogen-binding fraction and Type I ER was examined. We found that BP A had a greater affinity for the low-affinity estrogen-binding site, as compared to the Type I. The low-affinity estrogen-binding fraction showed 20 fold higher affinity for BP A. These data suggest that the low-affinity estrogen-binding site may be the mediator of xenoestrogen action. Thus, our data indicates that the low-,affinity estrogen-binding site, which we believe to be a Type Il estrogen receptor, may play a greater role in cancer than previously predicted
