The exploration of artificial intelligence through the analysis and design of expert systems
Get PDFExpert systems are a rapidly developing area of research. A sub-area of artificial intelligence, the success of expert systems depends heavily on an expert of a particular subject matter and that expert\u27s ability to make analytical inferences based upon the human capacity to reason and deduce. Because the broad and ultimate goal of artificial intelligence is to develop computers capable of emulating human behavioral and psychoanalytical patterns, there is much to discover about the learning component of a computer. This thesis focuses on the development and the complexity of expert systems. Included, is a brief history of expert systems, a look at the components of an expert system, and an approach as to the design and analysis of expert systems. Finally, the thesis ends with a look at the ethical issues concerning the use of expert systems based on case studies that were consulted prior to and during my research
Photoperiodic and pineal modification of the effect of 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone on deciduoma growth in rats
Get PDFThe compound 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA) is a nonestrogenic compound that enhances reproduction. Decidualization, marked by the decidual cell reaction, is a process that causes the transformation of the uterine stromal cells into decidual cells. The purpose of the study was to determine the reproductive role of 6-MBOA during decidualization in rats exposed to a short photoperiod (8L: 16D), and a long photoperiod (16L: 8D). Decidualization was induced by surgical uterine scratch trauma unto the anti-mesometrial surface of the uterine epithelium on day 4 of pseudopregnancy (PPG) a reproductive state that precedes and converges into decidualization. Rats were treated with subcutaneous doses of 600 ug/kg of 6-MBOA for 4 days either during the predecided stage (Day 1-4) or the postdecided stage (Day 5-8). Rats were then sacrificed on day 9 of PPG, the day of maximal uterine growth, when endometrial tissue and trunk blook were collected for assays. Measured endpoints were: endometrial weight, serum progesterone by radioimmunoassay, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by substrate zymography, pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity by radioisotope determination, and endometrial nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity by the conversion of [3H] arginine to [3H] citrulline. The results showed that 6-MBOA inhabited endometrial weight and serum progesterone levels during the short light photoperiod of the predecidual group. Pineal NAT activity showed marked increases with 6-MBOA treatment. However, endometrial NOS and MMPs were unaltered by the treatment. The significance of the results was that it showed that 6-MBOA had the ability to act as both a reproductive inhibitor, and this was dependent on the concentration used. Also, the mechanism of action of 6-MBOA was through the pathway involved in melatonin production
The Satisfaction of adoptive and non-adoptive foster parents : why are they satisfied?
Get PDFThis paper examines the perspectives of foster parents on their role in the lives of their foster children, with emphasis on the laws, Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980 that govern the foster care/adoption system. This paper will present different views, both good and bad, of adoptive and non adoptive foster parents: the experiences, emotions, and feelings they experience in wanting to be a permanent parent and placement for their foster child /children, when they are unable due to various circumstances. Five foster parents were interviewed. Results showed that foster parents are satisfied but it is due to their foster children. They all felt that they needed a bigger part in planning in the lives of their foster children. The majority stated they became foster parents and remain because ofthe needs of the children and the desire to make a difference

An evaluation of gastrointestinal parasites in the mixed breed/pure breed pound dog population of East Baton Rouge Parish
Get PDFABSTRACT An evaluation of gastrointestinal parasites was performed on mixed breed and pure breed pound dogs of East Baton Rouge Parish. Fecal samples were analyzed by the Modified Sheather\u27s Sugar Floatation Technique. Of the 54 canine specimens, 55.6% were female and 44.4% were males. Overall, 19 of the 54 (35.19%) canines were infected. The male canines had the higher infectious condition of the two genders, and the crossbred canines had the higher infectious condition of the two breeds. Also, hookworms were the most prevalent gastrointestinal parasites found within this population
The relationship between African self consciousness and attitudes in heterosexual relationships among African American college students in two different settings
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between African Self-Consciousness and attitudes toward interpersonal relationships among African American college students ending classes at a predominantly white university, Northwestern State University, and at a predominantly black university, Southern University. The ASC scale was used to assess the Black personality construct of African self-consciousness. The BHR survey was used to assess the subjects\u27 perceptions concerning heterosexual relationships. The findings support the hypothesis that ASC is directly related to whether the individual possesses Afrocentric or Eurocentric beliefs and attitudes. A direct relationship was found between the environment and attitudes of the subjects in that, the environment either facilitated or distorted the level of ASC, resulting in the subject possessing either and Afrocentric or Eurocentric attitude, respectively

Get PDFThe amalgamation of four distinct education systems, their respective financial situations, and the separate law governing them has presented a complex problem to the South African government. The following thesis is a study of the public policy governing the provision of special education within the South African education system. The work also includes the voices of policy makers and the persons who implement that policy, principals and teachers taken in interview form. Analysis of the law and interpretation of information gathered in interviews, has led the author to embrace a conceptual framework based in inclusion theory for the provision of services and socialist reform for the purpose of financial redress in education
Media opportunities for African-American women in the Baton Rouge area compared to the national average
Get PDFFor many years the media has been dominated by whites, showing disregard for the minority population of the United States. The media of the country lacks diversity with race and gender. This study focuses on the newspaper, radio and television media in the local area and compared its employment of African American women to the national averages of employment for the United States. Because the media is Louisiana lacks diversity, the opportunities for employment for African American females are slim. This study focuses on radio, television, and newspaper media and finds which avenue is best for African American women to enter. It explores the different jobs available in each medium, and the numbers nationally and locally for different media employment position. Overall, this study finds that the opportunities in radio media are better than either newspaper and television for African American females in the Baton Rouge area It also finds that opportunities for black females increase with a degree in Journalism or Mass Communications, proper skills and training, internships, and creativity. This study encourages African American women to excel in academics, to obtain the skills and training necessary for success, and to reach for their goals
