Attitudes can come from variety of sources such as the student\u27s own culture (Belgrave, 1998; Kambon, 1992; Grand & Strohmer, 1983; Olkin & Howson, 1994); gender of the individual with the disability (Alston & Mccowan, 1994; Boylan, 1991; Cole, 1998); and the type of disability that individual has (Boylan, 1991 ). The rise and fall of African American midwifery in the South
Get PDFThe purpose of this thesis is to give insight into the role played by the African American midwife in the rural south, including Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The African American midwife was responsible for prenatal care, delivery, and a certain degree of postnatal care for the mother and the infant. During slavery, she was all that the slaves had. The African American midwife also aided in delivery of some of the whites as well in a time when blacks were considered to be no more than animals. This proves that the African American midwife was more than a savage delivering babies for her peers. She was respected and considered as highly capable of performing her duties since she received an amount of education from white physicians. After the Civil War and subsequent end of slavery, the African American midwife continued to play a crucial role in health care of African Americans in the segregated rural south. She was able to provide them with a level of health care that they otherwise would have been deprived of. By desegregation, the role of the African American midwife became obsolete. Since African Americans were able to enter hospitals, be seen by white physicians, and become physicians themselves, there was less need for the African American midwife
Selective area laser induced deposition of metal borides
Get PDFA novel technique, laser-induced solution deposition (LISD), has been developed for the selective area deposition of rare earth hexaborides. This technique was simple and efficient and combined advantages of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and electrolytic deposition. The deposition of polycrystalline thin films of hexaborides and sub-borides, such as MB6, MB4, and MB2 (M = Gd, La), occurred by the light-initiated chemical reaction of nido-decaborane (B10H14) and rare earth chlorides in solution. These films grew with a strongly textured axis and had a morphology that was dependent on solvents and irradiation wavelength. Deposition of transition metals also occurred with the photolysis of organometallic complexes adsorbed on solid surfaces. Results of a more conventional chemical vapor deposition process were compared with those from the LISD process
The Testing and the automation of dark current, photoresponse and responsivity measurements for on-wafer metal semiconductor metal (W-MSM) photodetectors
Get PDFThis paper presents the testing and the automation of dark current, photoresponse, and responsivity measurements for W-MSM photodetectors. The testing phase of this particular photodetector is performed in order to compare manual measurement results with automated measurement results done in Lab VIEW. The automation phase is performed in order to take measurements quickly and efficiently using Lab VIEW programs which imitate the functions of actual instruments used to take dark current, photoresponse, and responsivity measurements. So far, only the dark current measurements can be automated. However, in the future, Lab VIEW programs will be written in order to automate the photoresponse and responsivity. Once this is accomplished, the dark current, photoresponse, and responsivity measurements will be automated for Inverted MSM (I-MSM) photodetectors used in the three-dimensional, high-throughput architecture described below
