    Geology and geoheritage potential value of Kampung Jeram Gajah, Lojing, Kelantan

    Geological heritage is described as an applied scientific field focusing on a distinctive, different and representative geosite. This discipline supports geology science. There are incredible geological phenomena and geomorphological features that create our Earth more fascinating and can become attractions of a location, state, or country. Lojing area possess many unique geological features such as karst landscape, fossil and amazing structures that contribute to educational purposes. However, Lojing had experienced changes in land use due to agriculture factor which exposed the geological features towards threats. The study area for this research is located at Lojing, Gua Musang, Kelantan with coordinate N 4° 43' 52.9" and E 101° 46' 0.89". The 5x5km2 study area is surrounded by heavy forests and plantations. The highest elevation of the study area is 520m while the lowest elevation is 180m.This study focuses on general geology and geoheritage potential value of Kampung Jeram Gajah. The objectives of the research are to produce an updated map of Kampung Jeram Gajah, Lojing and to determine the geoheritage potential value. The geology of the study area was determined by carrying out geological mapping to construct the geological map. There are three types Ethology found which are quartzite, marbleized limestone and mudstone. In this study, geomorphosite assessment is used to determine the ranking for the geosites. Evaluation of the potential value of geoheritage in the study area was achieved by assessing the rating of geomorphosite. These parameters are considered to contribute the potential or failure of the geosites. As a result, suggestions to preserve and conserve the geological resources are made in future

    Developing a vulnerable map of paddy field affected by rainfall variability in Pasir Mas, Kelantan

    In this era, the term vulnerability which emphasize the meaning of an area or object which are at high risk to the exposure of treats are one of the main current issues which are closely related to the environmental change that will lead to further disruptions including the changes on land use land cover (LULC).Therefore this study is conducted to identify 1) the LULC in Pasir Mas and to 2) develop a vulnerable map of paddy farmers based on the LULC map. Practically this study will identify the most vulnerable area in Pasir Mas which are most vulnerable towards the distribution of rainfall that might lead to flood occurrence and give adverse impact to agriculture sector and induced changes in farmer's net income. In this study, three satellite images are being processed for the year of 2004, 2007 and 2011 and were analysed by using Remote Sensing and Geological Information System (GIS).Next, the rainfall map of Pasir Mas were produced to show the distribution of rainfall. The land use data and the total rainfall data were then being used to produce this vulnerable map. The LULC map were mainly divided to 5 major classes which are the agriculture, forest, water bodies, cleared land and built up that also revealed the agriculture sector and forest are two main land cover in Pasir Mas. The vulnerable map of paddy farmers shows the relationship between rainfall distribution and LULC that also indicates the highest amount of rainfall distribution is on the land cover of agriculture and forest. Thus, when the amount of rainfall at the area is high, it will gives effect on the socio-economic variable of paddy farmers specifically farmer's net income. For future use, this vulnerable map is for the reference of those interested parties who are down to propose adaptations and mitigation steps to help the society to have better awareness and preparedness while dealing with the environmental changes that were induced from the high rainfall variability

    Evaluation of knowledge, awareness, and attitude towards waste management practices among University of Malaysia Kelantan Jeli students

    Waste is one of the major serious environmental issues in all over the world. Improper waste management will result in adverse health effects such as diarrhea, cholera, and chicken pox, etc. This study was conducted to identify the factors that influence the practices on waste management among UMK Jeli students and also to determine the relationship between those factors towards practices on waste management taken by students in UMK Jeli. This cross-sectional study was conducted using systematic and well-designed questionnaire. Out of 2500 UMK Jeli students, only 300 were selected. The data was analyzed using Spearman's Rank Correlation. The results show a significant relationship between attitude and practices and indicate a high confidence which is very small than 0.01 (r=0.233, n=300, p=0.000), in the correlation between attitude and practices. This study indicates that more efforts are needed to enhance the knowledge and awareness on waste management among UMK Jeli students

    A study of public perception and attitude on e-waste recycling management in Kulim, Kedah

    Globally, growth of urbanization influences the rising of people's living standard. Rapid development of technology has led to increasing usage of electrical and electronic industry and eventually raise amount of e-waste. However, the amount of electronic production did not balance with the recycling activity in order to counter the future issue. Plus, the public was unaware about e-wastes and their issues. The main objective of this research is to explore the perception of public regarding the e-waste recycling management in Kulim, Kedah. This research also identifies relationship between knowledge, perception and accessibility to recycling facility towards attitude of public. The data was collected using survey questionnaire conducted among public in Kulim, Kedah. There were 382 publics who were randomly selected as respondents. Generally, the results show that publics have a fairly positive perception on the e-waste recycling by using descriptive analysis. There are 49 % out of 382 respondents agree it can help save energy and reduce environmental pollution. There are 57.1 % publics agree that it is their responsibilities to manage the electronic waste properly which are quite a good start towards inculcating recycling habits. Knowledge, perception and accessibility factors play a role to influence e-waste recycling management of public. Second objective is analyzed using correlation test and multiple linear regressions. Perception has strong relation towards attitude while both accessibility and knowledge has moderate relationship. Even though people had positive perception on e-waste recycling, there was a possibility for them to act oppositely depends on other external factors

    Estimation of Liana Infestation above canopy in logged over forest in Gunung Basor using unmanned aerial vehicle

    The infestation of lianas in tropical forests and specifically in trees canopy cover have prompted a number of method in removing it which including cutting and ground survey that consumes a lot of time and work force. This limitations of traditional method have resulted in the use of unmanned aerial vehicle to capture the images of forest in a 1-hectare plot to assess forest canopies from above by using UAV that was equipped with 35mm lens and built with 84° field of view. The lianas were identified from the visual interpretation on the images taken and the orthomap produced. The visual interpretation from the images was supported by the ground survey to verify the validity and strength of using UAV as a new approach in assessing liana infestation from vantage point. Estimation of liana infestation from the visual interpretation and ground survey have derived two sets of data namely liana percentage cover and crown occupancy index. They were statistically analyzed and shown a medium correlation and significance from both datasets which produce the values of 0.03 and 0.00003 respectively . This approach of using UAV to assess liana infestation have showed that it has become a more reliable method and cost effective than traditional ways. It promotes a larger area coverage and flexibility in movement as well as accuracy which surpasses the human ability to complete the process and assessment in a much shorter time and less labour use

    Development of expert system for wild edible plant

    Wild edible plants defined by Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) are the plants that grow spontaneously in self-maintaining populations in natural or semi-natural ecosystems and can exist independently of direct human action. A plant considered to be an edible one could also have poisonous, medicinal, bitter, woody and hairy parts as well. Edible wild plants are also have been identified as part of solution to the issues of food insecurity. So, it is very critical to identify which part of the plant is an edible one; in other case it could have disastrous consequences. The identification of plants by conventional keys is complex, time consuming, and due to the use of specific botanical terms frustrating for non-experts. This creates a hard to overcome hurdle for novices interested in acquiring species knowledge. Today, there is an increasing interest in automating the process of species identification. Thus, this project will implement expert system using MATLAB to classify the wild edible plants and characterise its physical properties. This system able to detect the species as well as its medicinal properties that is believed to cure certain disease. The expert systems will be developed based on vision and machine learning techniques. Within this study also there are 37 GUI for 37 wild edible plant species that has been accomplished along with the updated database that consist of traditional medicinal properties for each of the species. This updated database along with the GUI would facilitate in many aspect such as the use of the wild edible plant as it gives out information such as the medicinal properties and the images of the specie

    Estimation of liana infestation above canopy in recreational park Bukit Bakar, Kelantan using unmanned aerial vehicle

    A study on lianas estimation has been conducted in Bukit Bakar Recreational Park, Machang, Kelantan. Liana infestation on tree crowns was assessed from above by using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), DTI Phantom-4 Pro which was manually piloted. Liana load carried by trees were determined by calculating the percentage liana cover (%LC) and measuring crown occupancy index (COI). Collection of image data by UAV had been captured and geo-tagged with GPS location. Liana infestation assessment was carried out to 1 ha area by cropping orthomosaics processed image and visual interpretation was viewed. The result of liana infestation was tabulated. The value of crown occupancy index (COT) depended on the accuracy of the percentage liana cover (%LC). There are 14 trees infested of lianas identified. The level of liana loads could be compared in graph. The value COT of 14 lianas-infested trees ranged from 0 — 2 which was very low or none, low and moderate. Point 2,3,4 and 11 covered moderate while point 9 covered very low or none levels of liana load on tree crowns and other points covered low levels. Elevation gradients, light availability, host interactions and seasonality affect the level of liana infestation. Spearman's rank correlation test was used to assess the concordance of the percentage liana cover (%LC) and measuring crown occupancy index (COI). This method could promote the local authority in forestry management particularly in managing the tree crown occupancy of liana in the logged-over forest

    Cerpen merupakan satu bentuk kesusasteraan baru (moden) yang terawal diperkenalkan berbanding genre kesusasteraan yang lain seperti novel, puisi, drama dan esei atau kritikan. Kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti nilai-nilai keislaman yang terkandung menerusi cerpen-cerpen terpilih dalam seuntaian Rindu Firdaus karya Ana Balqis. Seterusnya, merumuskan dan membincangkan nilai-nilai keislaman tersebut serta pengaplikasian Teori Pengkaedahan Melayu menerusi nilai-nilai keislaman yang terkandung dalam cerpen-cerpen terpilih dalam seuntaian Rindu Firdaus karya Ana Balqis. Di samping itu, kajian ini membataskan kepada kumpulan cerpen Rindu Firdaus karya Ana Balqis. Tambahan lagi, pendekatan analisis kualitatif telah digunakan sebagai kerangka panduan dalam kajian ini. Selain itu, Teori Pengkaedahan Melayu yang digagaskan oleh Hashim Awang telah diaplikasikan dalam kajian ini. Berdasarkan analisis dan dapatan kajian, kajian ini telah berjaya membuktikan bahawa terdapat banyak nilai-nilai keislaman yang ditunjukkan dalam cerpen ini terutama lima cerpen pilihan pengkaji iaitu cerpen Dialog Dua Perempuan, Mencari Syawal, Telur, Rindu Firdaus dan Rindu Berkampung. Penemuan nilai-nilai keislaman dalam kelima-lima buah cerpen ini sememangnya dapat memberikanpengajaran dan kesedaran kepada pembaca serta sebagai satu wadah untuk meningkatkan nilai ketakwaan seseorang insan terhadap Allah SWT

    Iron-reducing-bacteria (IRB) play important roles in geochemical cycling of iron. Under anaerobic conditions, IRB is capable of reducing insoluble iron (III) to soluble iron (II). Despite its direct involvement in iron redox reactions, the role of IRB in Microbial-Influenced-Corrosion (MIC) remains unclear. There were contradicted report on whether IRB inhibit or enhance corrosion during MIC. In this study, the effect of IRB strains on MIC of iron nail were investigated. Iron nail were added into growth media with the IRB strains and incubated at room temperature anaerobically. The corrosive assessment involved incubation at room temperature for 30 days and the absorbance reading Fe (II) concentration for abiotic control and sample were taken for every few days. Surface topography and composition of the iron nail were observed under Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result suggested S.oneidensis MR-1, an IRB strain enhance corrosion as it is also correlate with the increasing of iron (III) reduction activity

    Investigation of light intensity, nutrient and carbon sources towards microalgae oil production via soxhlet extraction techniques

    This study was carried out to study the optimized condition for microalgae cultivation in terms of light intensity, nutrient supply and carbon source to optimize the microalgae growth in order to produce high biomass with high lipid content. This is because to produce biodiesel, high microalgae lipid are needed which can achieve with a large amount of biomass. Thus, microalgae culture that labelled as MX1, MX2, MX3,MX4 was put under high light intensities, whereas MY1, MY2, MY3, MY4 were put under medium light intensity and MZ1, MZ2, MZ3 MZ4 will become control culture that been put under no light condition. The effect of the present of NPK fertilizers and presentof glucose will be observed simulated with light intensities parameter. At the end ofcultivation, MX2 obtained the highest biomass, and the biomass was being extractedwhich produced 97.186 g of biomass. The oil extraction yield is 9.66%. GC-MS analysis showed that the presence of UFA and PUFA in the oil. Thus, future research is needed to improve the technique to increase the microalgae biomass and lipid in the future in order to produced biodiesel
