    Forest tree analysis at Gunung Basor Forest reserve based on spot images

    Forests are the most important ecosystems and carbon pool, imparting with ecological offering and show a significant function in economic advantages. Forest resource analysis and monitoring are drastically essential to explore and prevent climate change, ecological degradation and environmental loss. Forest canopy cover is relatively critical parameter that being evaluated in forest analysis and forest inventory. The study area is located in Gunung Basor Forest Reserve. This study is to evolve a systematic framework for Forest Canopy Density (FCD) in tropical rainforests that gives significant in forest regulatory, microclimate changing and soil conditions. FCD model components are based on few of indexes, which are advanced vegetation, bare soil and canopy shadow. The final results of Forest Canopy Density (FCD) of Gunung Basor Forest Reserve for each classes which consist of 30% very dense, 37.3% moderately dense, 18.2% low forest, 8.2% shrub and 6.3% non-forest. In order to obtained r2 value, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis has been done. The highest value of r2 is 0.94 which was between FCD and AVI. This research study propose novel method to use high-resolution satellite images. Remote sensing has been plausible to be able to assess the forest structure and large area biomass in a way that is more accurate at relatively low cost. SPOT images provide better outcomes when categorizing variables of forest standoff and forest cover, as they have greater spatial resolution. Hence, SPOT-7 making it ideal for applications for forest analysis

    According to FAO, there were 1.3 billion tones food wasted per year that includes all types of food such as fruits, eggs, vegetables and many more. in Malaysia, not less than 3000 food tons of food that are still fitting for consumption were thrown out daily. To reduce food waste and reduce methane gas that may produce from the land field, composting is indeed a good idea due to the natural breakdown process involve which raw organic materials changed into a humic substance that suitable for plant nutrients. 2 kg of vegetable waste and 2g of rice waste were cleaned and mix with 500m1 of EM and lkg dry leaf as a bulking agent. The compost had the 50.52% of OM, 29.30% of TC, 1.02% N, 0.51% P, 0.60% K and 28.64% CiN. This compost reaches its maturity in 57 days with a final pH of 6.8. Different type of compost was test on Choy Sum for its growth performance was observed and recorded. By applying compost, the plants grow better in terms of height, leaves and chlorophyll content compared to control and agriculture waste fertilizer

    Actinomycetes as natural fungicide on infected green leafy vegetables

    Fungal diseases in green leafy vegetables are commonly under-esteemed but, the application of agrochemical fungicide has raised multiple drawbacks such as the higher amount of chemical residues and intensified microbial community stress. There is an urgent need to establish a bio-control antifungal agent with minimal toxicity threat, which sourced from natural environment. This study targeted to isolate and identify soil-borne fungi species in green leafy vegetables by molecular identification and investigated the antifungal potential of actinomycete strains on isolated fungi strain. Fungi were isolated from 3 soils collected underneath the infected green leafy vegetables. Actinomycete strains and synthetic compounds were screened for antifungal potential against selected fungi strains using agar plug diffusion assay. The isolated fungi were identified by 16S rDNA analysis. In this study, 41 fungal strains were isolated from soil samples. Actinomycetes strain C.D 6.5 exhibited the largest inhibition zone on 5 selected fungal strains, whereas actinomycetes strain C.KSJ 13.3 produced the broadest spectrum of antifungal activities. Synthetic compounds tend to form distinct and bigger inhibition zone compared to actinomycetes strain due to presence of methanol solvent. Isolated fungi were not identified due to low quality of genomic DNA that affects the PCR amplification results. The role of liquid nitrogen was proven in the fungal genomic DNA extraction as it reduced DNA degradation under the absence of cell wall. It can be concluded that actinomycetes strain have significant antagonistic activity against fungi and pure antifungal component can be extracted as an effective and environmental friendly bio-control agent on plant fungi

    Kelantan household intention in minimizing food waste through knowledge, attitude and practices of food and food waste management

    The food waste generated through out of the end of supply chain becomes a crucial issue. Household waste consist high percentage of organic waste. These organic wastes in the household were categorized as raw food waste during preparation and food leftover. Current practices of Kota Bharu resident that directly disposed food leftover into bin cause the increases of amount food waste generated in the house. In this study recorded estimated generated food waste weekly are approximately 2.6 - 3.0 kg per person. The increases of generated food waste among Kota Bharu householder are due to high family monthly income, with their common food choices are the home cooked and restaurant food that have high tendency to generate more food waste during preparation and consumption. Moreover certain group of Kota Bharu residents unable to categorized organic waste properly. The main goal of this study is to asses a significant relationship on the Kota Bharu resident's intention to minimized generated organic waste with their knowledge, attitude and practices on food and food waste management. However the attitude and practices level are slightly low compared to their knowledge and intention on food and food waste management to minimize the generated waste. Total of 384 Kota Bharu residents participated in this study that used the random sampling method. Result showed that there is a significant relation of Kota Bharu residents intention in reducing the food through the knowledge, attitudes and practices variable

    This project is about performing feeding trial on Broiler Chicken using different ratios of protease treated Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) Larvae as partial protein substituent. It was an initiative taken to reduce the cost of production of broilers as well as to increase the survivability of the broilers. Thus, parameters set was to measure the growth rate, feed conversion ratio and mortality percentage of the broilers at the end of the project. Four different treatments was set up with inclusion of 0% BSFL meal that acts as control, 20% BSFL, 40% BSFL and 60% BSFL meal in the feed formulation. It was tested on 32 male Cobb broilers for 42 days. The results showed 20% BSFL treatment had better performance in all aspects as compared to other treatments including control. However, the results expected wasn't as high as expected due to several limitation factors such as anti-nutritional factor and chitin presence in the feed, broiler leg deformities, weather and machinery malfunction

    Bangunan bersejarah merupakan salah satu tinggalan sejarah yang berpotensi dijadikan sebagai pelancongan warisan. Terdapat banyak bandar bersejarah di serata dunia yang masih mengekalkan bangunan bersejarah sebagai tarikan utama bagi sektor pelancongan warisan. Oleh itu, kajian ini dilakukan untuk mengenalpasti pengaruh seni bina bangunan bersejarah yang terdapat di Ipoh, Perak, menganalisis persepsi penduduk Ipoh terhadap pengaruh seni bina bangunan bersejarah di lpoh Perak sebagai daya tarikan pelancongan warisan dan menghuraikan peranan pihak bertanggungjawab dalam menjadikan bangunan bersejarah di Ipoh, Perak sebagai produk pelancongan warisan. Bagi mengkaji potensi tersebut, Teori Semiotik yang dipelopori oleh Charles Sandres Peirce (1914) telah digunakan dalam penyelidikan ini. Kaedah kajian yang digunakan bagi mengumpul data adalah kaedah kualitatif menerusi pemerhatian, kajian kepustakaan, kajian lepas, akhbar, dan data daripada laman sesawang kerajaan. Kaedah kuantitatif menerusi soal selidik pula dilakukan bagi mendapat maklum balas penduduk setempat terhadap pengaruh seni bina bangunan bersejarah di lpoh, Perak sebagai daya tarikan pelancong warisan. Hasil kajian mendapati bangunan bersejarah di lpoh, Perak masih meninggalkan pengaruh seni bina yang menarik bagi tarikan pelancong, pihak bertanggungjawab juga memainkan peranan untuk meningkatkan bangunan bersejarah sebagai pelancongan warisan di lpoh, Perak. Cadangan kepada hasil kajian ini telah dikenalpasti melibatkan pihak bertanggungjawab, individu, kajan akan datang dan lokasi perfileman. Oleh itu, bangunan bersejarah merupakan produk pelancongan dan aset yang perlu dikekalkan daripada dimusnahkan seiring dengan kerancakan pembangunan pada masa kini

    Dialek Kelantan dalam Dikir barat di negeri Kelantan telah memperlihatkan dari pelbagai aspek termasuklah pendidikan, budaya, bahasa dan sebagainya. Penggunaan dialek Kelantan dalam pertuturan harian masyararakat Kelantan dan masyarakat yang tinggal di Kelantan dapat dilihat dari segi perbezaan bahasa, makna dan penyampaian maklumat. Dikir Barat sebagai salah satu persembahan yang menggunakan dialek Kelantan. Kajian ini dijalankan bagi memperoleh dialek-dialek yang digunapakai oleh orang Kelantan di beberapa daerah di Kelantan, malah turut mengkaji tahap pemahaman orang bukan Kelantan memahami maklumat yang ingin disampaikan melalui persembahan dikir.     Assessing Phosphorus Uptake, Soil Phosphorus Availability and the Growth of Maize (Zea mays. L) upon Biochar Application at Different Rates in Tropical Acid Soil

    Phosphorous deficiency is considered to be one of the most frequently occuring limitations in the productivity of crops grown in tropical and subtropical ecological regions where P can strongly fixed to the soil through adsorption and precipitation thereby reducing its bioavailability to the plants. Biochar could be used to improve soil chemical properties and minimize P fixation in acid soils because these organic amendments have high affinity for Al and Fe. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the soil samples and biochar used and determine the soil P availability, total P uptake and phosphorous use efficiancy of maize (Zea mays L.) to biochar application. A field experiment was conducted in Agro Techno Park at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. Treatments with biochar showed significant increase in the soil pH, and significant reduction of exchangeable aluminium and iron in the soils with biochar compared to treatments with soil only and soil with chemical fertilizers only. There was also significant increase in the phosphorus uptake and dry matter production (leaves, stems, and roots) of Zea mays L. in treatments amended with biochar. This was due to reduction of soil exchangeable aluminium and iron concentrations, thus reduced the aluminium toxicity in the root zone, and increased the phosphorus availability in the soil. As conclusion, biochar can be used to improve the P availability, phosphorus uptake and dry matter production of Zea mays L. cultivated in tropical acid soil by reducing the soil phosphorus fixation

    Snake bean or Vigna unguiculata is a popular tropical vegetable in Malaysia. Snake bean contains high nutritional contents such as fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals and has a high demand in this country especially to be consumed in daily meals. In getting a high quality of yield for this snake bean, a research of studying the improvement of pod length and yield through mass selection was done. Mass selection is one of plant breeding techniques in improving the quantity and quality of the plant. The selections of snake bean have been continuously done for several generations. The purpose of this study is to continue the selection of snake bean for the 7th generation where the longest pod and the highest yield was selected. The vegetative and generative growth of snake bean was observed, and the data was collected. There were 225 seeds planted in 9 beds where the size for each bed was 9-meter length X 1-meter width. The location of the planted snake bean was in Agro Techno Park in UMK Jeli Campus. The results of the study were tested by descriptive statistical analysis to show the maximum, mean and standard deviation of pod length. The results of this research explained that the further the generation, the longer the pod length and yield performance in snake bean population

    Synthesis of odium alginate graphene-oxide silver composite thin film for photocatalytic activity of methylene blue

    The study describes the synthesis of Sodium Alginate Graphene-Oxide Silver Composite Thin Film for photocatalytic activity of methylene blue. The composite thin film then characterized by using UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. The FTIR shows the functional group contained in the composite thin film and proved that sodium alginate and Ag particles were successfully composited on the rGO sheet. Sodium alginate GOAg composite thin film also shows its high absorbance for photocatalytic activity to degrade methylene blue under sunlight. This is due to the presence of rGO in the composite as it prevents the aggregation between particles thus increase the surface area. Furthermore, the recombination rate of electron – hole pair also one of the factor that affect the photocatalytic reaction. The sodium alginate GOAg composite thin proved that it has huge potential in the water treatment industry
