    Get PDF
Feed is one the essential factor for rabbit livestock production. Generally, commercial feed or concentrates are quite expensive although it has a significant impact on rabbit growth performance. However, there is abundance of tropical forages especially for multi-purpose trees such as Mulberry species (Morus spp.) which can act as alternative protein source in a partial or complete substitute for commercial feed. The objectives of this study were to assess and to compare the nutritive values and chemical composition of Mulberry leaf in pelleted form with commercial rabbit pellet using proximate analysis. The Mulberry leaf was formulated by mixing the leaves with binding agent and other materials to make Mulberry leaf pellet. The proximate composition of pellet was evaluated to check the dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre and crude fat and ash contents. Mulberry leaf contained 33.97±1.06 of DM content, 24.10±0.32 of CP, 41.55% of CF, 1.58±0.05 of EE and 10.15±0.09 of ash content. On the other hand, Mulberry leaf pellet contained 91.07±0.10 of DM content, 19.43±0.08 of CP, 8.17% of CF, 5.98%±0.04 of EE and 10.96±0.02 of ash content. In general, the chemical composition was shown a significant different between the groups except for ash and crude fiber analysis only. Hence, this finding also indicate that Mulberry leaf is an excellent feed for high yielding animal and can be offered either in fresh or dried in compounded feed. The data obtained will help the rabbit farmers in Malaysia to improve the utilization of underrated tropical forages especially for this multi-purpose tree as a lowly-cost of rabbit feed. Thus, Mulberry leaf pellet have potential to become as substitution for a pricey commercial rabbit pellet

The porous ceramic is mainly used as insulator, and highly applicable in ceramic tile and construction purposes. There is small amount of researcher that applying the natural pore forming agent to create the porous ceramic due the particle size and pore distribution that inconsistence. Thus, this research is conducted to utilize the potential of wood sawdust as pore forming agent in porous ceramic, then to investigate the effects of wood sawdust content weight percentage (wt. %) and firing temperature to physical and mechanical properties of porous ceramic thermal insulator. There are two compositions that created by using the china clay and wood sawdust, which are 10 wt. % and 20 wt. % of wood sawdust. The wood sawdust is sieved for 300 μm to make sure the consistent size of wood sawdust is achieved. Then the mixing of clay and sawdust is proceeded with drying process for 110oC and firing process for 900oC to get the expected mechanical strength. The porous ceramic is inspect under several characterizations to inspect the mechanical and physical properties of porous ceramic. The characterization including the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) to show the wavenumber and it proved the by-product is a wood, then the Optical Microscope (OM) is used to check the morphology of the porous ceramic that mainly tend to become highly porosity that influenced by the by-product that added into to composition, then the water absorption is conducted to measure the apparent porosity, bulk density and water absorption. It is show that water absorption affect the mechanical strength of porous ceramic. The compression test is conducted for the inspection of mechanical strength (compressive strength), the result show that compressive strength decreases as the composition of the waste wood sawdust increases as the porosity of the ceramic lead to lower density. The increases of the water absorption value, it reduce the density due to the porosity hence the mechanical strength decreases

In this study, sodium alginate graphene oxide silver (GO-Ag) thin film composite with different amount of GO-Ag solution were synthesized using solvent casting method for the detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) by using spectrophotometry. Due to the harmful effect of Hg2+, it is crucial to have an option in detection and identification the level of Hg2+. The GO-Ag composite are chosen as an assay for optical determination of Hg2+. GO is an effective host material for the silver particle growth for the presence of surface functional groups and it also has excellent properties which is high specific surface area. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) uniformly decorated with silver particles was synthesized through the microwave irradiation of an aqueous solution containing a silver ammonia complex (Ag (NH3) 2OH) and GO. The presence of GO, on the other hand, prevents the agglomeration of the AgNPs and enhances the stability of the composite material in solution. The thin film composites were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-visible absorption spectra. The thin film undergoes a significant reduction in intensity of absorption on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of the Ag particles upon the every addition 10 μM of concentration of Hg2+, and this effect is based on the disappearance of the localized SPR absorption of the Ag particles due to the formation of silver-mercury amalgam. The FTIR analysis results showed a decrease in the intensity of the adsorption bands of the oxygenated functional groups for the sodium alginate GO-Ag thin film samples. While, for the XRD analysis of the thin film shows the existence of Ag particles on the layer of sodium alginate GO-Ag thin film with the diffraction pattern of silver crystal structure. However, the chemical structure of the alginate in the composite films barely changes with the increasing content of graphene oxide, indicating that there were mainly physical interaction but scarcely chemical reaction between alginate and graphene oxide

Bioplastic is more friendly compared to conventional plastic. In terms of environment, bio-plastic will less harmful to human beings while conventional plastic is really harmful to human beings. Many researchers are trying to find better bio-based to commercialize the bioplastic. For example, the researcher using corn starch to produce bioplastic. In this research, starch from oil palm trunk (OPT) will use as plant-based plastics. The OPT was washed using distilled water and dried in the oven at 110 °C for 24 hours. The OPT was grinded using a sieving machine until the granular powder of OPT was formed. Next, the ratio between granular OPT and distilled water was 1:7 then added in the confined bioreactor. The constant pressure 50 kPa, the constant temperature which is 150 °C was set. This process takes 50 min to transfer the OPT into the starch water. After the extraction process, the different ratios of plasticizer which were 5 %, 15 %, and 25 % were mixed together using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a plasticizer. Casting machine was used to produce the thin film from the starch water and CMC. The thin film was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). The result has shown that the presence of similar functional groups from the previous study such as Inorganic phosphate, Aliphatic amino acid salt, Primary aliphatic alcohol and Secondary aliphatic alcohol. SEM has shown the morphology of the thin film with different amounts of a plasticizer such as 5 %, 15 % and 25 %. Last but not least, the result for TGA shown that different amount of residue left in the crucible and DSC proved that the heat release at different temperature depending on the composition of CMC in the thermoplastic starch film

    No full text
In this research, the kenaf core fiber (KCF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) in the presence of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were melted blending with PP using Brabender internal mixer. The composites then fabricated using compression molding to form a sheet of PP and KCF reinforced PP (KCFPP) composites. Pure polypropylene (PP) matrix was used to serve as control whilst SBR was functionalized as impact modifier to improve the toughness properties of PP. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the chemical compounds in pure PP and KCFPP composites. The mechanical properties were determined by tensile test using Universal Testing Machine (UTM) according to ASTM D5803. Then Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) was used to characterize the fracture surface of the composites after mechanical failure. Water absorption was also conducted in order to evaluate its resistance of KCFPP composites. The results show that the increment in SBR content has given an improvement in impact related properties (elongation at break) but at the expenses of strength and modulus properties. Besides, the water absorption increased with the increment of SBR content. The morphological studies proved that the presence of matrix fibrillation contributed for increasing of toughness properties of KCFPP composites, but the existence of fiber pull-out and void contributed to the low strength, modulus and water absorption properties
