Phantom in the Mirror: Can Xue’s Deconstruction of Self in Old Floating Clouds

    Get PDF
Old Floating Clouds is a novella by contemporary Chinese writer Can Xue. Through the daily relationships between neighbors, husband and wife, father and daughter, lovers and mistresses, colleagues and friends, the novel shows that people have become caught in a web of jealously hating each other. The image of mirror plays an important role in the novel, and peep exists in every corner of the novel. In addition to being a mirror of objects, the human mind is also a kind of mirror in the interweaving of each other, and the relationship between self and others is constantly deconstructed and reshaped. This paper will use the “Mirror Stage” theory of psychoanalysis to explore and examine how the protagonists use the mirror to explore and examine themselves, and how they gradually become self-alienation and division in the mutual peeping with others. The mirror is not only a tool to peep at others, but also a reflection of the protagonists’ inner anxiety and self-examination. During the process of peeping, people try to find self-identification and comfort, but eventually fall into a deeper self-loss and spiritual dilemma

Navigating New Territories: A Multiple Case Study on Non- English Teachers turned to Foreign English Teachers

    Get PDF
This qualitative multiple-case study examines the lived experiences of three Filipino teachers who, without formal degrees in English or English Language Education, became English language teachers in foreign educational settings. Their journeys to the English teaching profession underscore the intricacies and difficulties experienced by non-English major instructors in environments where native-speaker norms and regulations are common. The research uses in-depth, semi-structured interviews as the main means of gathering data and is informed by transformative learning and postcolonial language ideologies frameworks. The study investigates three key aspects of their teaching careers: (1) the difficulties encountered, including communicative and linguistic limitations, recognition of qualifications problems, classroom norms embedded in native cultures, convergence with unknown curricula, multicultural classroom management, and both implicit and explicit discrimination based on native-speakerism; (2) the coping strategies used, such as incorporating multimodal, student-centered pedagogy, culturally sensitive and reflective teaching methods, networking with local and international teachers, and participation in both formal and informal professional development; and (3) the transformative gains achieved, which include the acquisition of intercultural communicative competence, validation of their legitimacy as non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs), enhanced instructional confidence, and a reaffirmation of commitment to inclusive education. The study's findings highlight the cultural intelligence, flexibility, and resilience of these teachers, who can overcome institutional constraints and cultural dissonance through professional agency and creativity. Their experiences problematize hegemonic ideologies linking English teaching competence to nativeness and native accented English, and instead speak to the pedagogic potential of linguistic variability and multicultural viewpoints. By placing at the center, the voices of Filipino non-English-major teachers, this study contributes to the sparse but expanding corpus of research on NNESTs in the Global South. Consequences of this research are expansive: it demands greater just recruitment policies, a change in teacher education curriculum to involve intercultural and multilingual pedagogies, and institutional mechanisms of support that empower NNESTs. Ultimately, it calls for a paradigm shift toward recognizing English as a global lingua franca ORIGINAL ARTICLE Authors retain copyright. Exploring Creative Thinking and Practice through Gestaltung: A Case Study of Spatial Design Learning in Art and Design Departments

    No full text
This study explores the development of creative thinking and practical ability in spatial design learning through the concept of Gestaltung. Focusing on learners in art and design departments, the research examines how creative ideas are generated, transformed, and realized through hands-on spatial creation processes. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research analyzes students’ learning experiences, design processes, and completed works to investigate the relationship between creative thinking, material practice, and spatial formation. The findings indicate that creative thinking in spatial design learning is not a linear process but an iterative interaction between conceptual imagination and practical execution. Through continuous experimentation with materials, forms, and spatial relationships, learners gradually construct personal creative strategies and design logic. The concept of Gestaltung serves as a critical framework that integrates thinking and practice, enabling learners to perceive spatial creation as a dynamic process of formation rather than a fixed outcome. This study contributes to art and design education by highlighting the pedagogical value of process-oriented spatial creation and offers insights into how creative thinking can be effectively cultivated through integrated design practice

The Impact of Classroom Dynamics on the Mathematical Connections of Students: A Mixed- method Study

    No full text
The purpose of the study is to look into how classroom dynamics affect the mathematical connections specifically among non-board college students at Kapalong College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (KCAST). This group is distinct and significant due to their diverse academic backgrounds and career aspirations, which present unique learning challenges and opportunities in mathematics, often being overlooked in broader research. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design (Clark & Creswell, 2013) was employed, chosen to allow for the simultaneous collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive, robust, and nuanced understanding through direct comparison and integration of findings. Participants included 283 non-board students randomly selected for the quantitative phase, and 14 purposively selected for the qualitative phase (seven for in-depth interviews and seven for focused group discussions). The study found that both classroom dynamics and mathematical connections were high among non-board students. Both quantitative and qualitative data sets generally indicated similar conclusions and supported each other, with the quantitative phase showing a majority of students reported high levels, and qualitative responses providing diverse subjective experiences. This study’s lies in confirming that classroom dynamics is a vital factor in enhancing mathematical connections for this specific demographic, as both data sets demonstrated that supportive classroom environments significantly improve non-board students’ mathematical comprehension and their capacity to make meaningful connections between mathematical concepts
