Effects of Fake News and Propaganda on Management of Information on Covid-19 Pandemic in Nigeria
AbstractThis study measured the effects of fake news and propaganda on managing information on Covid-19 among the Nigerian citizenry. This study examined sources of information on Covid-19 available to the people, evaluated reasons behind spreading fake news, examined how fake news has affected the spread of covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria, established the consequences of fake news on managing covid-19 pandemic and as well identified ways to contain fake news at a time like this in Nigeria. It is a survey with a sample size of 375 participants selected using simple random technique. Instrument of data gathering was questionnaire widely distributed in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria using Survey monkey. Data was analysed using frequencies, counts and percentages, tables and charts. Findings revealed that people rely more on radio, television, and social media for information on Covid-19. Fake news is spread by people mostly for political reasons and intention to cause panic. In Nigeria, fake news has led to disbelief of the existence of the virus thereby leading to violation of precautionary measures among the citizenry and lack of trust in the government. Concerted effort on the part of the government is required to give public enlightenment on the danger of fake news. Also, directorate of anti-fake news should be established to censor and reprimand sources of fake news. People should always check source of information to confirm its credibility and be weary of sharing unconfirmed information especially on the social media. Keywords: Covid-19, fake news, propaganda, information management, Nigeria
THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AMONG FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION
The study explored the participation of first-year student groups on social media towards the adjustment process at a university's satellite campus in Ghana. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The study involved all 1061 first-year university students in six academic departments of the College. A total of 680 (64%) participants returned validly completed copies of the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were employed for data analysis. The findings indicate that WhatsApp was the most popular application for social media groups, while a need for information-sharing, peer-tutoring and learning, and finding and keeping friends were the primary motivations for joining social media groups. First-year students are involved mainly in reactive activities, as most engage when solving an academic assignment through group discussions. Though challenges persist, such as posting unwanted images, below-par expectation, and ineffective and irrelevant communication, most are willing to continue their social media groups' membership in the long term. This study provides valuable insight into transitioning students' lived experiences on social media from the group perspective. These insights are valuable conceptually and practically to academic counsellors, librarians and student affairs officers who are expected to provide on-going education on (social) media literacy to first-year students to enhance the adjustment process. The study is the first of its kind in Ghana that investigates social media group participants' exit intentions
Access, Skills and Constraints of Barangay Officials towards the Use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
ABSTRACT - The study determined the access, skills and constraints towards the usage of ICT among barangay officials. A complete enumeration technique was used due to the small size of the population. A total of 121 barangay secretaries and barangay treasurers comprised the study respondents. The findings revealed that most of barangay officials have access to personal computer at home and in the office using their own mobile data and office internet connectivity. With the support from the Local Government Unit (LGU), it was found that most of the respondents are advance and proficient in computer usage. As constraints to ICT usage, the study respondents still experienced slow internet bandwidth that makes connection and communication weak along with the low income status. Consequently, it was found that there are no significant differences in terms of skills and constraints among barangay secretaries and barangay treasurers towards using ICT. It can be concluded that study respondents prefer to use office computer to access the information they need due to the convenience and availability of resources. The study respondents are competent enough to handle their job well but listed slow internet and low financial resources may hamper their ICT usage. Research implications are also offered.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/29429/29429.pd
