Quantum Machine Learning: A Scientometric Assessment of Global Publications during 1999-2020
Get PDFThe study provides a quantitative and qualitative description of global research in the domain of quantum machine learning (QML) as a way to understand the status of global research in the subject at the global, national, institutional, and individual author level. The data for the study was sourced from the Scopus database for the period 1999-2020. The study analyzed global research output (1374 publications) and global citations (22434 citations) to measure research productivity and performance on metrics. In addition, the study carried out bibliometric mapping of the literature to visually represent network relationship between key countries, institutions, authors, and significant keyword in QML research. The study finds that the USA and China lead the world ranking in QML research, accounting for 32.46% and 22.56% share respectively in the global output. The top 25 global organizations and authors lead with 35.52% and 16.59% global share respectively. The study also tracks key research areas, key global players, most significant keywords, and most productive source journals. The study observes that QML research is gradually emerging as an interdisciplinary area of research in computer science, but the body of its literature that has appeared so far is very small and insignificant even though 22 years have passed since the appearance of its first publication. Certainly, QML as a research subject at present is at a nascent stage of its development
Availability and utilization of library portal services for research in Selected University libraries in Nigeria
No full textThis research paper delved into the availability and utilization of library portal services for research in University libraries in Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The study was carried out in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Felix Aghagbo Nwako Library, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Library (UNIZIK), Awka. A total of 70 professionals (librarians and system analysts) in these libraries supplied data for the study. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. These were used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance and 68 degree of freedom. Major findings showed that portal Services available in the Library showed that the areas of availability of library portal services in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, U.N.N. includes agriculture, health sciences, engineering, environmental sciences and information about institution, social sciences, arts and humanities, natural sciences. In Festus Aghagbo Nwako library, Awka, the areas of portal library services include career development, federal government programmes, environmental science, biological sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, engineering, and health sciences. Findings on extent of utilization of portal services available in the libraries indicated that portal services are utilized to a low extent in the university libraries. Furthermore, Librarians did not significantly differ in their opinions on the availability of library portal services and on the extent of utilization of library portal services in the libraries under study. It is therefore recommended that provisions should be made by the universities and library management to provide and update required portal services in addition to creating enabling environment for enhanced access and utilization of these services. A Study on the Service Provision Direction of the National Library for Children and Young Adults in the 5G Era
Get PDFIn order to establish a digital-based use environment for the provision of new information services suitable for the 5G era, it is necessary to discuss the direction of service provision by the National Library of Children and Young Adults in the 5G era. Based on utilization services in other fields, library services in the 5G era, including the development and provision of employee education and training services, ultra-high-definition and 360-degree realistic contents and education on library use, provision of multi-dimensional realistic media streaming broadcasting services, provision of telepresence education programs, activation of virtual communities, implementation of hologram performance halls/exhibit centers, and provision of unmanned book delivery services, environment monitoring, safety monitoring, and customized services, were proposed. In addition, based on 5G service, 5G technology, and library application direction, advancing into a producing and supporting base for ultra-realistic and immersive contents in the 5G era, strengthening online and mobile services in the non-contact era, and establishing a smart library environment were proposed as the service provision direction for the National Library of Children and Young Adults in the 5G era.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/29431/29431.pd
Let Us Make: Interrogating Personnel’s Perception towards Makerspace in a Nigerian University Library
Get PDFMakerspace offers an innovative way for university libraries to render services and achieve its core objectives. However, there is low level of adoption in Nigerian university libraries, hence the need to investigate the personnel’s perception towards makerspace as an innovative learning platform. To achieve this, the descriptive research design was used to elicit data with the aid of a structured questionnaire, from the 96 library personnel in John Harris Library, University of Benin. Of the 96 copies of questionnaire distributed, 68 copies were returned and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the library personnel were familiar with makerspace even though they still require more information about it. Also, that makerspace gives students the opportunity to acquire new skill and enhances collaboration among learners. Moreover, the study revealed that budget constraints, high cost and maintenance of equipments, erratic power supply and lack of staff training are some of the perceived challenges to makerspace implementation. Consequently, the study revealed that university libraries should strategize on how to increase allocation of funds, organize makerspace webinar for personnel, ensure stable electricity supply and create a dedicated space for makerspace in the library. In conclusion, makerspace will provide students with the technological exposure and creative abilities required for the future, and as such effective planning should be made for its deployment and sustainability in Nigerian university libraries.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/29428/29428.pd
Analysis of the Librarian Certification System in Korea and Measures for Improvement
Get PDFHalf a century has passed since the academic field of library and information science, which was born at the end of the 19th Century in the Western world, was introduced to Korea. Despite years of quantitative growth and qualitative maturation, the field has been facing the inconvenient truths of discrepancies in education levels arising from varying education providers, and weakened public confidence in librarian certification. Based on analysis of librarian training and education programs and the certification system, this research seeks to point out the limitations of the national librarian certification system, which is losing public confidence, and present a model for improvement. Library and information science education has expanded from universities to librarian training centers and lifelong education centers, and the librarian certification system has emerged as a target of reform. This research presents measures to improve the librarian certification system to government bodies and the Committee on Library and Information Policy with the purpose of providing grounds for policy enforcement
An Assessment of the multiple challenges associated with student’s access to electronic resources at a Public University Library in Ghana
Get PDFAbstractAcademic libraries strive to provide timely access to relevant electronic information resources to sundry users in the era where emerging technologies promise to revolutionise user experiences. This is seen through a host of related services and facilities packaged to provide trustworthy, convenient, and unlimited access to scholarly information resources. In developing countries, the assumption that the availability of electronic information resources necessarily translates to the accessibility of the same breaks down completely. Our understanding of how barriers to access systematically varies with the compositional and contextual characteristics of users is incomplete. Using a public university library in Ghana, this study assessed the heterogeneous barriers or constraints students encounter in accessing electronic resources based on their demographic and contextual attributes. A descriptive survey design was adopted and structured questionnaires were administered randomly to 558 students in the four constituent colleges of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Data were collected and analysed using SPSS and descriptive statistics were generated. The results revealed that students faced six key challenges in accessing electronic information resources in the library namely delays in the download of information, poor internet connectivity, and limited accessibility of university portal, inadequate computers in the library, poor lighting and limited ancillary services (on the spot printing facilities), with differences based on gender, academic level, and college affiliation. Only 24% males and 26% females had no challenges or problems with delays in the download of electronic information. About three-fourth of all users had poor internet connectivity and complained about inadequate computers associated with accessing electronic resources. Forty (40%) percent of undergraduate students in the colleges of education studies, agriculture and natural sciences, and humanities and legal studies each encountered four to six simultaneous challenges. Irrespective of gender, first-year undergraduate students in all four colleges were the least likely to report multiple challenges. Following this trend, various programs related to employment have been provided through various government and institutions. However, they have established overlapping policies and programs and there is no one stop gateway to find effective and efficient way to find relevant information. For this purpose, this study aims to provide employment and job search subject gateway development. The study has carried out case studies, literature reviews, and user survey. Based on this study, it suggested a linked metadata model to organize and link scattered information together, and a digital gateway operating diverse information services. An Analysis of the Trends in the Arena of Cooperation by the International Research Cooperation Related Experts
Get PDFThe International Research Cooperation Information Center has carried out a project to collect the DBs related to the international research cooperation information, and build an online service system. This study seeks to examine and understand the trends of international research cooperation by analyzing the data corresponding to the other international cooperation DBs such as symposium and seminar, which may be said to be the arena of cooperation by the international research cooperation related experts, among the international research cooperation information DBs collected by the International Research Cooperation Information Center. The other international cooperation DBs are divided into the international cooperation consortium, international cooperation symposium, international research cooperation seminar, international training program, international research cooperation workshop, and the international research cooperation equipment / facility. It seems that, based on the research results, it is necessary to hold international cooperation programs, seminars, and workshops, among others, with a focus on the themes to recover the trends of international cooperation as in the past, and recover from the pandemic situation. The results of this study may be utilized as the basic data for the researchers related to the international research cooperation, and furthermore, by analyzing various international research cooperation information DBs in a multi-faceted manner, the studies analyzing the research trends of international research cooperation by field, subject, and type may be conducted, and the facilitation of the international research cooperation in Korea is expected moving forward
Research Trends of Coronavirus: Bibliometric Analysis from 1989-2019
Get PDFThe world is going through the most unprecedented time with the outbreak of novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has become a threat to millions. Coronavirus are a group of viruses that cause a variety of diseases in mammals and birds leading to a range of illnesses in humans including common cold and more severe forms like severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and COVID-19, which are life-threatening. The virus gets its name from its shape which takes the form of a crown with protrusions around it. In December 2019, a pneumonia outbreak was reported in Wuhan City of China, which was later traced to a novel strain of Coronavirus and termed as Novel COVID-19. It typically causes flu-like symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath and is transmitted through human-to-human and there is no cure of it till now. Thus, this bibliometric study has been carried out to analyse the research progress in Coronavirus and literature published during a period of 30 years (1989-2019). Data for the study were fetched from Web of Science(WoS) multidisciplinary database and the publication trends in terms of total articles, productive countries, institutions, journals, productive authors, most cited articles and authors, etc have been analysed. In total, 4917 articles were retrieved; these were from 711 sources and were contributed by 14442 authors. The collaboration index was 3.11, which clearly indicates that there has been a lot of collaboration in this field. The most preferred journal for the study period was “Journal of Virology” and maximum contribution has been from the University of Hong Kong
Accessibility and Usability of Library Websites to Students with Visual and Physical Disabilities in Public Universities in Kenya
Get PDFThis article examines the accessibility and usability of the library websites by students with visual and physical disabilities in universities in Kenya. The article is derived from a doctorate research study undertaken at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) that examined how public university libraries in Kenya provided information services to students with visual and physical disabilities. The study used survey research design and adopted a mixed methods approach where data were gathered using survey questionnaire, focus group discussions, structured interviews, and observation. The study population consisted of six public universities that had a longstanding tradition of enrolling students with disabilities. Data were gathered from students with visual disabilities (86), students with physical disabilities (91). University Librarians (6), Personnel from the Disability Mainstreaming departments (5), Systems Librarians (5), and the Library Personnel who dispensed information services to students with visual and physical disabilities (133). Social Model of Disability and IFLA Access to Libraries for Persons with Disabilities checklist were used as the conceptual and theoretical framework in the study. The results revealed that all the libraries had library websites. However, the websites did not provide disability services page or any information designed for individuals with disabilities. The study also revealed a lack of awareness of the existence of library websites among some students with disabilities. Furthermore, others were unaware they could access e-resources through the library websites. The study also revealed that the website design posed various challenges to students with visual disabilities. Given this scenario, the study concluded that people with disabilities were excluded from access and use of library websites in public universities. The authors recommended that library websites must contain disability services page providing information suitable for persons with disabilities as well as create awareness of the same. The libraries should evaluate their websites to ensure compliance with W3C requirements for web content accessibility. Additionally, the libraries should develop library disability policy to give guidance on the provision of digital information as well as other information services to persons with disabilities.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/29430/29430.pd
