An Assessment of ICT Infrastructure, Deployment and Applications in the Science and Technology (S&T) Research Institutions in Ghana
Get PDF AbstractThe paper discusses the Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure as far as the availability of computers, local or wide area networks, Internet connectivity and its reliability, size of bandwidth and its optimization, etc. in the Science and Technology (S&T) research institution. It also examined the profile of the research scientists and looked at the type of ICT infrastructure that are available for their use as well as the reliability of the Internet connectivity within these research institutions. It looked at the broadband capacities of the research institutions and the ICT capabilities in respect of the technical and managerial support back-up that are available to the research institutions. The study used the survey research method with a questionnaire as well as personal observation to gather the data. From the data gathered, it was realized that the internet connectivity and the size of the bandwidth that the Research and Development (R&D) institutions subscribed to differed significantly. Again, the extent to which the research scientists were able to access the internet in their respective institutions depended on the quality of the local network in place. Subject Approach to Information Retrieval with Special Reference to Bengali Documents: A Critical Study
Get PDFThe library provides its services to satisfy the user’s approach. This study was designed to assess users’ attitudes towards the retrieval of the Bengali document in OPAC through subject headings. This study contributes significantly to multi-lingual information retrieval. It also traces users’ perceptions regarding subject access highlighting the problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject in OPACs. It can be inferred that some features are required to be incorporated to improve the functionality of the OPACs and thereby to satisfy users’ requirements. Results revealed that search experience using subject headings is not satisfactory. Where the “keywords” search rather performs better but due to redundancy of search, it is hard to retrieve required documents in the least possible time. It has also revealed that fewer perform known-item searches and their success rates for these searches are generally good. Thus, the findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali Subject Headings. Information Sharing and Evaluation as Determinants of Spread of Fake News on Social Media among Nigerian Youths: Experience from COVID-19 Pandemic
Get PDFThis study examined social media information sharing and evaluation as determinants of fake news spread among Nigerian youths with empirical evidence from COVID-19. The study adopted descriptive survey method. The Web-based questionnaire (Google docs) was used in collecting data for the study. The total responses for the study are 278, which represents the sample size. The finding of the study revealed that most Nigerians used Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram to share information on COVID-19. However, only few Nigerians used Linkedln and other types of social media to share information on COVID-19. It was also found out that building relationship with social media communities, enjoyment and risk taking, and political inclination influence sharing behaviour of Nigerians during the COVID-19. Results show that social media handle/page found sharing of fake news on COVID-19 especially on the treatment, vaccines numbers of cases and symptoms. The study concludes that there is positive significant relationship between information sharing and information evaluation on COVID-19 among Nigerians. It was recommended that information sharing evaluation of Nigerians should be in line with standard practice of relevance, accuracy, purpose, currency and authority.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/26787/26787.pd
The Utilization of e-resources at Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTech), Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria
Get PDFThis article examines the utilization of e-resources Modibbo Adama University of Technology, (MAUTech) Yola under the auspices of the central library, the Ibrahim Babangida Library. Academics and students are primary users of information resources of any library, hence, their responses towards the utilization of e-resources in the institution have been critically considered in this study. A mixed-method research design was adopted for the study. A case study approach was employed. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) theories were used to develop the conceptual framework of this paper. Questionnaires were used as data gathering tools. Academics and students acted as participants. Major findings are lack of sufficient Internet access for academics and students and lack of training and awareness campaigns. Functional Requirements of Data Repository for DMP Support and CoreTrustSeal Authentication
Get PDFFor research data to be shared without legal, financial and technical barriers in the Open Science era, data repositories must have the functional requirements asked by DMP and CoreTrustSeal. In order to derive functional requirements for the data repository, this study analyzed the Data Management Plan (DMP) and CoreTrustSeal, the criteria for certification of research data repositories. Deposit, Ethics, License, Discovery, Identification, Reuse, Security, Preservation, Accessibility, Availability, and (Meta) Data Quality, commonly required by DMP and CoreTrustSeal, were derived as functional requirements that should be implemented first in implementing data repositories. Confidentiality, Integrity, Reliability, Archiving, Technical Infrastructure, Documented Storage Procedure, Organizational Infrastructure, (Meta) Data Evaluation, and Policy functions were further derived from CoreTrustSeal. The functional requirements of the data repository derived from this study may be required as a key function when developing the repository. A Study on the Factors Influencing the Satisfaction of Online Service System on the International Research Cooperation
Get PDFRecently, as the pandemic COVIDー19 has been spread worldwide, international research cooperation has come to the fore to overcome the crisis and develop treatments. Currently, in Korea, with the support from the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation, the International Research Cooperation Information Center operates an online service system for international research cooperation as a venue for sharing results among international research cooperation researchers and invigorating such research. However, since Korea’s performance in international research cooperation is still poor, actively pursuing measures to improve professionalism and diversity based on international cooperation is deemed necessary. Therefore, in this study, factors influencing the level of satisfaction with international research cooperation online service systems were identified, and measures to increase the satisfaction of international research cooperation online service were proposed based on the analysis results. Design of the system quality factors, accuracy and consistency of the information quality factors, and professionalism of the service quality factors were verified to have a significant effect on the satisfaction with international research cooperation online service systems. Protecting Copyright Owners in Nigeria: A Panacea for Intellectual Development
Get PDFThe paper focused at the protection of copyright owners in Nigeria a panacea for intellectual development. A descriptive survey design was adopted in carrying out the study. The population of the study consist of librarians and law lecturers in the Universities of Port Harcourt and Benin, Nigeria. From the population, a sample size of 112 was randomly selected for the study. Three research objectives guided the study. The study utilized a self-developed questionnaire for data collection. A total of 112 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to librarians, library officers and law lecturers, out of which 108 copies were duly filled and returned, representing 96.4.%. The collected data was analyzed using percentage and mean score. The findings revealed that protection of copyright will protect owners and encourage intellectual works in Nigeria. The result also revealed that the right to intellectual properties is one of the ways to encourage intellectual content owners. The finding revealed that copyright protection provides security for intellectual products. Based on the research findings, it was recommended that owners of intellectual properties deserve good earnings for their intellectual works in order to promote Knowledge proliferation and availability so as to meet the reading needs of the citizens at the various levels. The study also recommended that all cases relating to copyright violation in our courts should be summarily dealt with. Representation of Disabled Community in Mainstream Media
Get PDFThe research looked into the representation of disabled community in Malaysian mainstream media. The lack of awareness and common assumption of specialty towards the disabled community have caused a small amount of local disability researches that question the relationship between the disabled community and the media. The research aimed to find out the types of representation of disability, analyze mainstream content from various perspectives and factors of misrepresentations. Although many theories attempt to explain disability without standing in the shoes of disabled group, to fit it under media context, the research focused on disability culture as the core theory to explain the common disability representation. To specify the research scope, people with visual impairment was selected as the core representative of the disabled group as the group is believed to be a notable group in media research. To collect the findings, two methods were combined as triangulation, which are intensive interview and content analysis. Intensive interviews were conducted separately with three interviewees to include more variety of angles, including a journalist from local print media, visual impaired personnel, and representative from blind association whereas content analysis was completed through analyzing the news stories related to disabled people in three mainstream newspapers. The findings indicated the invalidity of disability culture as the misrepresentation of disabled community in Malaysia is not as severe as depicted by the scholars because the news coverage focusing on them is getting more positive. The application of charity approach is still common in news coverage to portray them as victim and disabled people are partially marginalized due to the misrepresentation in mainstream media content. Usage of Library Collection, Services & Assistance Among Ophthalmologists - An Opinion Survey

The ophthalmic Libraries supply quality ophthalmic information to the ophthalmologists to serve the patients in a better way and stimulate the growth of ophthalmic field. This paper aims to study the usage of library collection, services and assistance among the Ophthalmologists – Eye Doctors in India. A survey method is used to obtain the ophthalmologists' usage of library collection, services and assistance. Through convenient sampling method, a structured questionnaire is circulated to the ophthalmologists in India and 633 ophthalmologists are responded. Among the 633 ophthalmologist, 82.15% of the ophthalmologists use the library collection - book. 73.46% of the ophthalmologists use the online data / journals. 89.73% of the ophthalmologists seek assistance to locate books/articles/documents. There exist a significant difference between the ophthalmologists use of Library Service and gender (p value 0.001**). There exist a significant difference between the ophthalmologists use of Library Assistance / help and designation category (p value 0.000**). There exist a significant difference between the ophthalmologists use of Library Assistance / help and working experience (p value 0.017**). There exist a significant difference between Library Services (p value 0.009**), Library Assistance / help (p value 0.000**) and institution type. Influence of Capacity Building and Attitude to Work Of librarians in Edo State Public Libraries, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study is on capacity building and attitude to work of librarians in Edo State public libraries, Nigeria. Investigation was on the capacity building programs in the Edo State public libraries, the levels of librarians’ awareness and participation in the programs, methods of building the capacity programs, influence on the librarians’ attitudes to work and factors militating against the programs. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the entire population of 23 librarians were used. Results indicate that the capacity building programs in the library include computer literacy skills, online public access catalogue (OPAC), Internet collection management and general trends in librarianship. The methods used in building the capacity programs in the library include conferences, workshops/seminars, on-the-job and internally organized courses. Respondents indicated very low level of participation in the programs and a negative influence of the programs on their attitudes to work.
