Research on the Development of Economic Value Evaluation Indices for Public Libraries
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation index for evaluating the economic value of libraries. To this end, a preliminary evaluation index was derived from analyzing a total of approximately 60 domestic and foreign papers that examined the value of libraries. Based on the derived preliminary evaluation index, 11 experts were selected and the final evaluation index was developed by conducting the Delphi survey for 3 times. The final evaluation index consists of four evaluation areas, such as the economic value of the public library, economic revitalization, manpower development and job creation, and the improved investment value, seven evaluation items, and 22 evaluation indices. Assessment of Academic Utilization of Online Information Resources by Undergraduate Students in University of Nigeria, Nsukka
Get PDF ABSTRACT The research was undertaken to determine the academic utilization of online information resources by undergraduate students in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The objectives of the study were to identify the online information resources used by the students; academic purposes for their use, extent of their academic use, problems as well as strategies for improving the utilization of the online information resources by undergraduate students. Descriptive survey was used as the design of this study. The study was carried out in Nsukka, Enugu State in the South Eastern Geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The population of the study is made up of 25,657 students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Six research questions were set to guide the study. The instrument for data collection is UOIRSQ (Utilization of Online Information Resources by Students’ Questionnaire) which was formulated in accordance with the research question. Since the research design is descriptive, likewise, descriptive method of data analysis was used in answering the research questions. The major findings were that out of many online information resources available, only few of them are used by undergraduate students. Wikipedia Online Encyclopaedia, Google Books and Punch/Vanguard are highly used. Problems and strategies for improving on the problems were given. Some of the recommendations made for enhancing the academic utilization of online information resources by students in the university include: providing more online training facilities to undergraduates in order to equip them on how to use online information resources; constantly upgrading the server’s bandwidth to ensure maximum service or faster navigation; providing and given to the students improved access to computer systems, preferably laptops, and also teaching them advanced searching skills through organisation of workshops and seminars by the library and university. Use of Reproductive Health Information among University Undergraduates in Ogun State, Nigeria
Get PDFAbstractYoung adults bear a higher risk of reproductive health problems than adults. Cases of unwanted pregnancies and their attendant complications reportedly rank among the highest in Africa. This study therefore investigates reproductive health and use of health information among university undergraduates in Nigeria. Correlational research design was adopted using descriptive survey method. Questionnaire was designed and used as survey instrument. The study used 25% of 6,978 undergraduate students from government and private universities in Abeokuta, Ogun State between 16-24 years old from each of the 35 departments that made up 8 colleges in the two universities. A total number of 1,745 copies of questionnaire were administered to the respondents out of which 1,500 copies were filled completely and retrieved making the response rate to be 86.95%. The findings of this study show that friends, parents and relatives were the closest sources of health information the respondents have used for reproductive health purposes. Utilisation of health information through information resources was effective. The study also concludes that cultural value, level of education and unfriendly attitude of health officials were parts of the major problems confronting effective utilization of reproductive health information among young adults in Nigeria.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/11662/11662.pd
Legal deposit in the Sultanate of Oman: The Law of Press and Publications and its role in building Oman’s culture of democracy
No full textOmani citizens participate in the making of a culture of democracy through the implementation of the legal deposit or the Law of Press and Publications. Legal deposit is the law that requires the meant intended, whether they are publishers, printers or authors, to submit certain copies of their work or publications to a repository, usually a library. The present study aims to explore the reality of the Omani Law of Press and Publications and to discover how the law defines the term "publications". In addition to the role of this law in building the Omani culture of democracy, the study uses an interpretive research paradigm of applied unstructured interviews and content analysis. Four printers were interviewed. With regard to the findings, the study determined that definition of the term "publications", according to the law, is very general and covers different items, and the Law of Press and Publications plays an essential role in the building of Oman’s culture of democracy. The study also found that four of the printers participated in creating the Omani culture by depositing the requested copies of his publications, although one of them is not happy to be asked to do this.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/09911/09911.pd
Mapping of the universe of knowledge in different classification schemes
Get PDFGiven the variety of approaches to mapping the universe of knowledge that have been presented and discussed in the literature, the purpose of this paper is to systematize their main principles and their applications in the major general modern library classification schemes. We conducted an analysis of the literature on classification and the main classification systems, namely Dewey/Universal Decimal Classification, Cutter’s Expansive Classification, Subject Classification of J.D. Brown, Colon Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Bibliographic Classification, Rider’s International Classification, Bibliothecal Bibliographic Klassification (BBK), and Broad System of Ordering (BSO). We conclude that the arrangement of the main classes can be done following four principles that are not mutually exclusive: ideological principle, social purpose principle, scientific order, and division by discipline. The paper provides examples and analysis of each system. We also conclude that as knowledge is ever-changing, classifications also change and present a different structure of knowledge depending upon the society and time of their design.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/10973/10973.pd
Online social network interactions: A cross-cultural comparison of network structure on McDonald’s Facebook sites between Taiwan and USA
Get PDFA cross-cultural comparison of social networking structure on McDonald’s Facebook fan sites between Taiwan and the USA was conducted utilizing the individualism/collectivism dimension proposed by Hofstede. Four network indicators are used to describe the network structure of McDonald’s Facebook fan sites: size, density, clique and centralization. Individuals who post on both Facebook sites for the year of 2012 were considered as network participants for the purpose of the study. Due to the huge amount of data, only one thread of postings was sampled from each month of the year of 2012. The final data consists of 1002 postings written by 896 individuals and 5962 postings written by 5532 individuals from Taiwan and the USA respectively. The results indicated that the USA McDonald’s Facebook fan network has more fans, while Taiwan’s McDonald’s Facebook fan network is more densely connected. Cliques did form among the overall multiplex and within the individual uniplex networks in two countries, yet no significant differences were found between them. A Critical Literature Analysis of Library and User Privacy

This study was conducted in 3 stages of literature analysis suggested by other researchers, including Powell (2005). First, I found and collected literature related to personal information and library user privacy. Second, I reviewed the collected literature and identified detailed subjects and core concepts. Third, I analyzed the core subjects, main discussion points, and related examples shown in those papers divided into 7 subgroups. A Study on the Evaluating Service Quality in Special Subject Repository: Focused on the 5·18 Archives

Mobilizing Learning: Using Moodle and Online Tools via Smartphones
Get PDFThe emergence of smart devices such as smartphones (e.g., iPhone) and tablets (e.g., iPad) may enhance e-learning by increasing communication and collaborative learning outside the classroom. These devices also facilitate the use of online technologies such as Facebook. However, the adaptation of learning Management System (LMS) services to mobile devices took longer than social networks or online tools, such as Facebook and Twitter have already been long used via smartphone. The main purposes of this study are to explore students’ skill levels of LMS (Moodle) and their knowledge of online tools or technologies and then examine if there is a correlation between smartphone use and using of online tools and Moodle in learning. The study conducted among 173 students in the department of information studies (DIS) in Oman, using online survey. The study found that most students demonstrated high levels of using LMSs.YouTube, Wikipedia and Facebook were clearly recorded as the most popular sites among students while LinkedIn and Academia.edu were two online tools that had never been heard of by over half of the 142 participants. Emailing and searching are recorded the most popular online learning activities among students. The study concluded that students prefer to use smartphone for accessing these tools rather than using it to access LMSs, while a positive correlation was found between the use of these tools and smartphones, but there was no correlation between smartphones and using LMSs.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/11663/11663.pd
Library Professionals’ Perception on the ICT Applications in Engineering College Libraries: A study on Tamil Nadu, India
Get PDFThis study discusses about the library professionals’ perception on the ICT Applications in engineering college libraries in Tamil Nadu. The relevant data was collected from the library professionals in the self financing engineering colleges situated in Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. 625 questionnaires were distributed, 504 replied by the respondent and the response rate is 80.64%. It was found that the respondents with experience ‘Below 5 years’, given ‘Lack of infrastructure’ as the first priority. ‘Lack of interest on the part of users’ and ‘No support from administration in training library professionals’ are the second and third preferences indicated by the respondents. The least preferences were given for ‘Fear of ICT application. Similarly, respondents with experience ‘6 -10 years’ has indicated ‘No support from administration in training library professionals’ the first priority. The least preferences were given for ‘Inadequate training in ICT applications’ by the above respondents. It can be inferred that the professionals are accepted and need the training in ICT applications.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/09910/09910.pd
