This study has the aim of developing an evaluation index that can help evaluate the reliability of the information resources of institutions retaining humanities assets for the purposes of laying out the foundation for providing one–stop portal service for humanities assets. To this end, the evaluation index was derived through the analysis of previous research, case studies, and interviews with experts, the derived evaluation index was then applied to the humanities assets retaining institutions to verify the utility. The institutional information resources’ reliability evaluation index consisted of the two dimensions of the institutions’ own reliability evaluation index. The institution provided a service and system evaluation index. The institutions’ own reliability evaluation index consisted of 25 points for institutional authority, 25 points for data collection and construction, 30 points for data provision, and 20 points for appropriateness of data, for a total of 100 points, respectively. The institution provided service and system evaluation indexes consisting of 25 points for information quality, 15 points for appropriateness (decency), 15 points for accessibility, 20 points for tangibility, 15 points for form, and 10 points for cooperation, for the total of 100 points, respectively. The derived evaluation index was used to evaluate the utility of 6 institutions representing humanities assets through application. Consequently, the reliability of the information resources retained by the Research Information Service System (RISS) of the Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS) turned out to be the highest.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/20259/20259.pd

This paper discussed motivation, some theories of motivation, motivating factors, and motivation and library personnel. Workers are the human resources of any organization and the most important asset of an organization. Motivation arouses, energizes, directs, and sustains behaviour and performance of employees. Motivating factors include extrinsic factors which pertain to the conditions under which a job is performed, intrinsic motivators which contribute to job satisfaction and subsequently increase productivity, and job design which includes job rotation, job enlargement, and job enrichment. Job design specifies the content or methods of any job in such a way that various requirements of a job can be effectively satisfied. Adequate motivation of library employees lies with the managers because they generally control work distribution, freedom and autonomy, work challenge and variety, staff development and training, and advancement opportunities. The managers are urged to create enabling environment to ensure improved commitment, satisfaction, and productivity of employees in the library.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17108/17108.pd

    Get PDF
Socialization of doctoral students refers to the process through which they acquire various types of information about their work, department, university, and discipline for their future careers.  This study aims to investigate information behaviors, with emphasis on identifying types of information exchanged in mentoring between faculty advisors and their doctoral students in library and information science (LIS). As a first step to developing a content framework for LIS doctoral mentoring, the author interviewed ten LIS doctoral students from nine U.S. universities. Based on data from these interviews, the author identified sixteen types of information exchanged: language, history, coursework, research, skills, teaching, networking, structure, politics, goals, strategies, values, norms/tradition, rules/policies, benefits, and personal life. In comparison with a content framework used, four dimensions were newly added. In addition to the identification of content dimensions, the author observed four meaningful contextual levels to which the content types can be applied: work, department/school, university, and discipline. The qualitative data also showed that interpersonal factors of advisees/advisors and contextual factors might relate to information exchange in doctoral mentoring. In a following paper, the author will present the results of a follow-up survey that tests and generalizes the findings of this study.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17107/17107.pd

Since business startups are known to have positive effects on the economic growth of a country, it is necessary to review the factors influencing the willingness to start new businesses for the people to act on business startups. In this regard, the study sought to reexamine the findings of previous research showing that the innovative, initiative, and risk-taking characteristics, which are the constitutive elements of entrepreneurships, influence the willingness to start up. Furthermore, in this study, attempts were made to empirically analyze the direct and indirect relationships of self-leadership influencing the willingness to start new businesses. Consequently, first, it showed that college students’ entrepreneurship has positive effects on the willingness to start new businesses. Second, the significance of the gender of college students was not confirmed as to playing a regulating role in the relationship between entrepreneurship and the willingness to start up. Third, the relationship between self-leadership and the willingness to start new businesses was validated to be significant in a positive direction. Fourth, no mediating effect of self-leadership in the relationship between entrepreneurship and the willingness to start new businesses was observed. Such research results have the following significances. First, while there is an awareness that the concepts of business start- up, entrepreneurship, and leadership carry masculinity, the lack of regulating effect of gender may reflect the changing phases of time and society where women's participation has been increasing. Second, self-leadership is a concept by which one pioneers his or her own life and an influencing factor on the willingness to start up; however, since it has enormous impacts on the entrepreneurship and willingness to start up, relevant mediating effects were not observed and the magnitude of the important influence between entrepreneurship and the willingness to start up were confirmed. URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17762/17762.pd

Information Exchange of Library and Information Science Doctoral Students with Faculty Advisors

    Get PDF
Faculty advisors play a vital role in a learning and adjustment process of doctoral students at their work, department, university and discipline by sharing and exchanging relevant information and knowledge in the profession. Despite the important role of information practice in doctoral advising, few studies have investigated the informational aspects of faculty advisors and their students. Thus, this study aims to consider the distribution of information exchanged between faculty advisors and their doctoral students and relate them to doctoral students’ demographic characteristics (gender, age, race and/or ethnicity, degree, and stage of doctoral work). The findings of this study show that overall information exchange is most frequent at the work level followed by the discipline, school/department, and university levels. In particular, information exchange at the work and discipline levels explains the characteristics of doctoral education, socializing students into both student and professional roles. In addition, there are statistically significant differences in information exchange along certain dimensions according to the advisee’s gender, age, race and/or ethnicity, degree, and stage of doctoral study, suggesting that information needs and seeking behavior may vary according to the demographic characteristics of advisees. URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17763/17763.pd

Are the benefits derived from ICT based reference and information service worth the financial and other commitments devoted to it? In an attempt to answer this, this study delved into finding out the perceived benefits; the rational for ICT based reference services in Nigerian university libraries. The main objectives were to find out the purposes for using ICT facilities in reference services delivery and the perceived benefits derived from using ICT resources in reference and information services. Being a survey, questionnaire was used to collect data from the librarians of twelve (12) universities; two (2) each sampled from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Data was analyzed using frequencies, mean scores and standard deviations. ANOVA statistical analysis was used to test the hypothesis of no significance difference in the benefits derived from ICT based reference services using p-value of 0.05 to calculate the level of significance. Major findings showed that ICT facilities and resources are used for a variety of purposes and many benefits are derived from such services as against traditional/manual reference services.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/14413/14413.pd
