Information Literacy in Indian Schools: Trends and Developments

    Get PDF
Information Literacy (IL) is considered as an important aspect of everybody's life. In today’s information society possessing IL skills is more significant than ever as information is available in many forms and formats. Schools are the primary places where these skills are imbibed in students. Organizations like UNESCO, IFLA, ALA, AASL, & ACRL have formulated IL Standards and Guidelines/Models at the international arena. Though the Government of India is making efforts in providing information literacy skills yet there are no set of standards/guidelines devised by any agency/organization at the school level. This paper gives a brief account of IL initiatives and highlights the trends and developments of IL programmes in Indian School Libraries. It recommends the nation to form a national level advisory committee to develop IL framework for Indian school Libraries. Further, it suggests that librarians should work in close collaboration with teachers for better results. A moderate attempt has been made to provide feasible solutions for effective implementation of IL programmes in school libraries.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17760/17760.pd

Evaluation Indicators for Green Libraries and Library Eco-friendliness

    Get PDF
Eco-friendliness is having little to no damaging or polluting effects on the natural environment. An eco-friendly green library is a structure that is designed, constructed, renovated, operated, and reused in an ecological and resource-efficient way. Therefore, construction of green library buildings should be a priority, as well as other eco-friendly aspects such as printed materials, non-book materials, library operations, and library service. The results of this study will set up to serve as basic data for the direction of development for green libraries in our country, as well as a reference for the employees of libraries in constructing or remodeling library buildings, establishing service infrastructure, providing information service, and planning library duties in an eco-friendly way. Furthermore, while recently a number of libraries were eco-friendly certified, the previous evaluations only reflected the architectural aspects without taking into consideration the other characteristics of the libraries. The evaluation indicators for eco-friendly green libraries that were developed in this study based on the features of libraries should evaluate the eco-friendliness of the libraries with more accuracy.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/13283/13283.pd

Creating Makerspaces in Nigerian Public Libraries as a Strategy for Attaining National Integration and Development

    Get PDF
The recognition of public libraries as development partners places an onus on public libraries to provide services that will enhance national integration and development. Whereas libraries have been known to provide information resources in various formats, recent developments around the world have shown that it is no longer enough to provide information to users. Users are being encouraged to become knowledge producers and not just consumers. In this regard, libraries are rethinking their strategies. One of the consequences of this, is the creation of makerspaces: a space for creating things within the library. This paper explores the prospects of makerspaces in Nigerian public libraries. The paper identified how makerspaces could lead to national development by providing access to technology, providing opportunity for users to work together thereby promoting unity and togetherness among the citizenry of a given society as well as providing an enabling environment for people to be creative. The paper argued that makerspaces in Nigerian public libraries will lead to increased patronage and users’ satisfaction, change in perception of librarians by the public, promote synergy among citizens and result in economic development.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/17761/17761.pd

    Get PDF
Prisons are mostly filled with social deviants and like other correctional institutions, deserve organized information (provision) centers such as library. A study on library information needs and accessibility by prison inmates was conducted at Kuje prison, Abuja and Kaduna prison, Kaduna, Nigeria, both of which have functional libraries. A sample of 898 inmates was randomly selected from all the convicted inmates in the two prisons. A total of 106 inmates were selected from Kuje prison and 792 from Kaduna prison. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the inmates. All the 898 inmates responded. A total of 786 (87.9%) males and 112 (12.4%) females were involved in the study. With regards to the educational level attained by the inmates, 347 (38.6%) had Junior Secondary School Certificate while 323 (30.0%) had Senior School Certificate both accounting for 74.6% of the sampled population. In areas of information needs, 94.5%, 96.1%, 98.7%, 99.4%, 100%, and 100% of the respondents indicated that information on current affairs, survival and coping, educational support, legal aid, skill acquisition, and health, respectively were highly needed by the inmates. Out of the 12 information resources listed, only newspaper, novel, handbook and manual, and bulletin were readily accessible with percentage accessibility of 60.7, 7.8, 6.8, and 1.9, respectively. One major reason adduced by the respondents for limited access to information resources was the very strict rules and regulations in the prison. Providing more library resources and granting the inmates more access to the library would assist in character reformation and rehabilitation of the inmates.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/14412/14412.pd

    Get PDF
We collected and analyzed data from e3data.org, which is a global registry of data repository services. We analyzed data profile for three leading Asian economies–Korea, China, and Japan–against the reference data for other participating countries. In particular, we examined how individual countries contribute to the repository, organizational type, versioning and product quality management, and subject tagging. We come to the conclusion that all three Asian countries still fall short in terms of involvement. As for participating institutions, there are 7 from Korea, 64 from China, and 120 from Japan. Among Chinese organizations, 3 are profit, 61 non-profit, and 37 organizations (which yields 1.8%) are involved in repository building. In Japan, there is 1 is commercial and 119 non-profit organizations, of which 57 (3.0%) are involved in repository building. All 7 organizations from Korea are non-profit, and 6 of them (0.3%) are involved in repository building. As regards versioning and product quality management, Korea, China, and Japan are up to par with other countries. Subject analysis reveals that Korea contributes more to geosciences, Japan to physics and geosciences, while China, unlike Korea and Japan, is more active in life sciences. It is hoped that this study will help planning domestic infrastructure for research data repositories with proper consideration for specific research domains and national characteristics.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/13284/13284.pd
