PMCN: combining pdf-modified similarity and complex network in multi-document summarization
This study combines the concept of degree centrality in complex network with the Term Frequency * Proportional Document Frequency (TF*PDF) algorithm; the combined method, called TF-PDF, constructs relationship networks among sentences for writing news summaries. The TF-PDF method is a multi-document summarization extension of the ideas of Bun and Ishizuka (2002), who first published the TF*PDF algorithm for detecting hot topics. In their TF*PDF algorithm, Bun and Ishizuka defined the publisher of a news item as its channel. If the PDF weight of a term is higher than the weights of other terms, then the term is hotter than the other terms. However, this study attempts to develop summaries for news items. Because the TF*PDF algorithm summarizes daily news, TF-PDF replaces the concept of “channel” with “the date of the news event,” and uses the resulting chronicle ordering for a multi-document summarization algorithm, of which the F-measure scores were 0.042 and 0.051 higher than LexRank for the famous d30001t and d30003t tasks, respectively.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/21159/21159.pd
Awareness and Utilization of the Internet Resources and Services for Academic Activities by the Academics of Tertiary Institutions in Adamawa State, Nigeria
This study was conducted to investigate the awareness and utilization of the Internet resources and services for academic activities by the academic staff of tertiary institutions in Adamawa State. The researchers adopted a quantitative research method using cross-sectional survey design to collect data from the respondents. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used. Three hundred and thirty-three (333) copies of the questionnaire were administered to the respondents in the eight (8) sampled institutions and two hundred and ninety-two (292) respondents representing (87.6%) were returned and found useful. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics by the use of SPSS version 20.0. The findings revealed that respondents were aware of all the Internet resources, (e-books, e-journals, and online databases), but regarding the Internet services, they were mostly aware of only the e-mail. The study further found that online database and e-mail as the most Internet resources and services utilized by the respondents. There are inverse and weak relationship between awareness and utilization of the Internet resources and services by the academic staff of tertiary institutions in Adamawa State. Information Networking and its Application in the Digital Era with illustration from the University of Port Harcourt Library
This paper discussed the factors that necessitated information networking, types of networks, benefits of information networking, library information networking and the University of Port Harcourt library network initiatives. Information networking is a process of communication, exchange of ideas, resource sharing and collaboration between individuals, organizations, institutions and libraries and it is facilitated by ICTs and the internet for improved accessibility. It has been brought about by information explosion, rapid advancement in information communication technologies, inadequate funding and increased demand for quality information. Networks can be classified into local, national, regional, and international networks and are formed to serve different categories of user communities. Benefits of information networking include resource sharing, on-line conferences and participation in programmes at distant centers, collaboration among scholars in different countries, and communication flow through the internet, social media, and electronic mail. Library information networking started with the interlibrary loan which has metamorphosed into library consortia in which groups of libraries partner to coordinate activities, share resources and combine expertise. The University of Port Harcourt Library network initiatives started with an e-granary (a CD ROM) and the establishment of a local area network. It had transited from Card Catalogue to Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and now has a website devoted to library services. The library has subscribed to more than 15 electronic databases and has updated to include automated circulation and cataloguing services. Information networking has greatly improved the sharing of resources in information acquisition and dissemination since no single institution can acquire the overwhelming number of information resources in their various formats in the reality of the current information explosion.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/20257/20257.pd
A Study on Activity in Reading of Men in terms of Brain Science
This study attempts to seek a solution, in terms of brain science, to stimulate reading activities of men to whom no attention has been given from the field of reading. In order to do so, brain pattern, reading tendency, reading preference, reading effectiveness and influence of reading were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, first, it showed that respondents' characteristics did not affect brain patterns, but school and social influences on reading were found to affect brain patterns. Second, reading propensity according to gender was observed to be different in terms of personal health, personal self - esteem, and cultural artistry. On the other hand, reading effectiveness was found to be different in terms of reading engagement and the willingness to continue reading whereas reading propensity according to the brain pattern was different in books related to humor and family matters. Third, reading satisfaction, reading engagement and willingness to continue reading all were observed to affect the reading activities of men. Suggesting measures to stimulate reading activities of men based on such findings, first, implementing dynamic reading education programs and finding reading models for men are needed. Second, when selecting books for reading program operations, books should be recommended according to gender rather than being selected en bloc by libraries. Third, since reading education at home shows high influences on both male and male-type brain pattern, the starting point of reading education should be made at homes. In particular, fathers, who can become a role model for men, need a reading role model, and reading education programs for fathers are also required.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/19283/19283.pd
Demographics, social media use and perceived academic stress of secondary school students in St. Thomas Aquinas College, Akure, Nigeria
The study was carried out to investigate the influence of demographics and social media use on perceived academic stress of secondary school students in St. Thomas Aquinas College, Akure, Nigeria. This was achieved using five research questions and four null hypotheses. The population of the study consisted of 1,107 students at ISCED level 3, out of which 286 were selected based on the Israel (2003) model for determining sample size. The Ex-Post Facto (EPT) research design of the correlational type was employed to investigate the study while questionnaire was used for data elicitation. Out of the 286 copies distributed, 192 (67% response rate) were retrieved and analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (correlation and multiple regression). The findings revealed that there is high frequency of social media use among secondary school students, majorly for meeting new friends and chatting. The perceived academic stress (PAS) of the students was found to be moderate. Of the three demographics considered, only class had significant influence on PAS. Use of social media did not have significantly influence on PAS of the students. When combined, demographics and social media use predicted PAS; and when considered relatively, of the independent variables, only class as an aspect of demographics predicted PAS. Therefore, the authors concluded that PAS of secondary school students is not directly influenced by demographics (except for class) and social media use. Based on the study’s conclusion, recommendations were made.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/22142/22142.pd
