A Study on the User Demand Forecasting and Improvement Plan of Gimpo City Library Service
Get PDFWith accommodation of a population of many young people and families due to Hangang River New Town Housing Project and development of railway station spheres, a need is increasing to improve the quality of public libraries service for Gimpo citizens and to establish more libraries. This study thus analyzed the book lending data of Gimpo City libraries, and the city's libraries-related social media big data in an effort to forecast the users, and thus to propose four library service improvement measures. First, in terms of book gathering and book development policy plans, a proposal was made to expand good books for children and youth, and to expand general original-language books related to learning of English, and English books for children. Second, in terms of the establishment of additional libraries or specialization strategy, a proposal was made to establish exclusive children's libraries or English libraries, and to establish library specialization strategy with focus on children and English themes. Third, in terms of library culture programs, a proposal was made to provide library culture programs in relation to children education and to expand weekend library culture programs. Fourth, in terms of library facilities, considering the convenience of parking facilities, a proposal was made to establish libraries near apartment complexes. A Comparative Study on the Perception of the Job Seeking College Degree Candidates and the Librarians Concerning Library Specialized Services
Get PDFThis research has investigated the perceptions of subject specialization services and the opinions of students majoring in library and information science preparing for librarianship, librarians operating in the field, and library directors on the status and ways of nurturing subject specialization for librarians, among others. To this end, based on the results of previous research and the survey questionnaire analysis, we have presented a policy to train subject librarians. First, we have proposed a plan for systematizing the current educational system within the department of library and information science. We have also suggested ways to secure subject expertise based on curriculum management, minor programs, multi-major programs, and interdisciplinary major programs based on the standard curriculum model. Second, we have presented a subject specialization educational system for field librarians, and further suggested details for the development of an educational program that can help build subject expertise and the operation of educational methods as well as the personnel in charge of implementing the educational programs. Third, we have proposed institutionalization of the qualifications of the subject librarian where the qualification requirements have been organized considering academic background, major program, library career, and career experience in the subject specialization service, further suggesting the implementation and maintenance of the system.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/19284/19284.pd
A Comparative Study on the Librarian and Users' Perception of the Specialized Library Operation
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to investigate the status of specialized services and the overall satisfaction of the operation of the specialized services for the librarians and users of the specialized libraries, and based on the ISA method, compare the specialized theme data, specialized service place, specialized program, specialized theme area facilities and environment, and derive issues of the specialized library operation and improvement measures. Consequently, first, when developing the program, the specialized library needs to develop programs in possession of unique characteristics specific to the areas of the differentiated themes from the cultural and educational programs run by the existing libraries. Second, it is necessary to focus on the specialized theme area information services for the users, and to this end, it is necessary to improve librarians’professionalism. Third, it is necessary to secure the budget for the specialized services and secure space. Since the scope of the services which may be provided as per the budget intended for providing specialized services may be limited, it would be necessary to secure and operate the budget systematic to this end. Information needs and Information-seeking behaviour of auto mechanics in Siwdu, Cape Coast, Ghana
Get PDFThe main objective of the study is to find out the level of information-seeking behaviour of auto mechanics working at Siwdu and its impact on the work they do. The respondents were registered members of Siwdu Auto Mechanic Association and the total number of sixty respondents used represented 20% of total number of members. Quantitative data obtained mainly from the questionnaire were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20. Responses for the interview were analysed thematically. Some of the major findings are as follows: The majority of the respondents did not know how to get information from the library; some of the respondents preferred consulting their “Masters” for help; majority of the respondents had Android phones but did not know how to access relevant information; respondents were aware of the benefits of authentic information; and respondents recommended that Management of libraries should organise seminars and workshops for auto mechanics to enable them know how and where to access information. Utilization of Open Access Repositories for Visibility of Academic Publications by Lecturers in South-East, Nigeria
Get PDFAbstractThe study investigates the utilization of open access repositories for visibility of academic publications by lecturers in South-East, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to investigate the types of academic publications available, platforms used in self-archiving, level of satisfaction derived by lecturers with the contribution of open access repositories, challenges and strategies. It adopted descriptive survey design. Proportionate stratified sampling technique was used to draw a sample size of 418 from the total population of 4,187 lecturers. Questionnaire and observation check list were used for data collection. Frequency count, percentage, and mean score were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that there are enough academic publications available such as books, journals, projects, and thesis with the exception of handouts. It also revealed that Google Scholar, Research Gate and Open Access Journal were the main platforms lecturers use in self-archiving; while other platforms like Institutional Repositories, among others were minimally employed. Lecturers are less satisfied with the contribution of open access repositories. All the suggested challenges such as inadequate power supply, poor network, lack of awareness and inadequate research grants were all accepted. Similarly, all the suggested strategies for improving them were accepted. Recommendations were made based on the findings such as more awareness creation on importance of open access repositories; re-training of lecturers and provision of adequate ICT infrastructures that will improve the utilization of open access repositories by lecturers which could enhance the global visibility of academic publications from the Nigerian Universities. Automation of Academic Libraries and Web Development: A Reverie or Reality

The study explored literature on the status of automation of academic libraries and web development in Nigeria. It was established that the functions of library management software are abysmally under-utilized in academic libraries in Nigeria, thus, progression of automation projects remain a swinging pendulum. Influence of Age, Job Status, ICT Literacy Skills and ICT Use on Task Performance of Library Personnel in Public Universities.
Get PDFABSTRACTThe purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of demographic factors (age and job status), level of ICT skills possessed by respondents and ICT use on task performances of library personnel. The study employed descriptive survey of correlation design. The study samples were 248 library personnel made up of librarians and library officers referred to as (library professionals) in public university libraries in South-west, Nigeria. Data was collected by questionnaire. The study established significant positive correlation between age, job status, ICT skills and task performance. Also, Anova test found significant joint influence of age, job status, ICT skills and ICT use on task performances of respondents. The study further indicated that age, job status, ICT skills possessed by respondents and ICT use had relative significant influence on task performances of respondents. It is therefore recommended that, library personnel must leverage their demographics positively to bring about positive disposition to their jobs while all categories of workers must ensure they possessed the requisite ICT skills that will ginger ICT use for effective task performance. Information Management in Herbal Research: Nexus of Trends and Application of Emerging Technologies
Get PDFIn recent time, herbal information and products have been used to cure different sicknesses and diseases such as arthritis, insomnia, ulcer, diabetes, cough, fever, constipation and cardiovascular problems. Several researches conducted have given birth to the use of different herbal products (such as rosemary Lavenders, sage, curry leaf’ Tea bush, Bitter leaf, Thyme, garlic, ginger, Ginseng and Aloe Vera) for medicinal and culinary purposes. Due to the ever increasing importance of herbal research information, there is need for adequate and proper management of herbal research information. This article examined the need for information management in herbal research, characteristics of herbal research information as well as the nexus of trends of information management in herbal research. It discussed and identified the roles of libraries in the management of herbal research information. The paper also identified some emerging ICT tools used for information management in herbal research. It concluded that apart from helping to preserve valuable information on herbal medicinal research, information management of herbal research also help to preserve the indigenous knowledge of the people from being lost as a result of factors such as acculturation and biodiversity. The Personal Information Management Practices of the Graduates of the Department of Information Studies at Kuwait University
Get PDFThis study examined activities involving the finding, organizing, managing, and re-finding of information by information studies graduates in Kuwait. This research also conducted a review of the tools needed for effective personal information management (PIM) and assessed perceptions about improving PIM through Internet use. Data were collected through 26 semi-structured interviews. The participants are currently employed in different sectors engaged in a variety of information-related activities. This study’s findings indicated that participants gathered different types of information from a variety of sources. This information was stored using several devices and services, including desktop computers, shared drives, clouds, bookmarked websites, e-mail correspondence, and favorites lists. Participants organized information in personal folders according to categories such as subject/topic, time, project, document type, and geographical region. Their preferred methods for information re-finding included searching by keyword and browsing through folders. Interviewees reported problems of information overload, fragmentation, and anxiety. Most participants reported that they were active in social media via mobile device, while some of them used Siri or Ask Google to retrieve information. Tools used for PIM included calendars, tasks, schedules, e-mail management tools, clouds, and social networking tools. Participants reported that the Internet helped with personal information management practices, but that some privacy issues arose in this context.
