James McWillie at the National Archivist Meeting
James McWillie, seen second from the left, was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School where he participated in boxing and was later inducted into the CBHS Hall of Fame in 1979 and inducted into the Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1988 during his retirement, McWillie volunteered with the O’Donnell Archives at CBU. McWillie dedicated his time to composing a chronology of historic events at Christian Brothers College/University, in the city of Memphis, and the Catholic Community from 1871-2009. In 1989, he was awarded the Volunteer of the Year at CBU and, in 1998, received the Brother Lawrence Egbert Service Award at CBU. CBU then provided McWillie with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005 after volunteering for more than 20 years. In the photo, he is attending the National Archivist Meeting hosted at CBU.
Additionally, McWillie was said to be the living the Lasallian way of life. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, and he was also a prolific member of the Memphis community. He served on several boards, including Christian Brothers High School, and served his faith, earning him the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice Medal from Pope John Paul II in 1988. His dedication to his faith, Memphis, and CBU contributed to being honored as a “Brother.” After being recommended for admission by the Brothers of Memphis, Tennessee, McWillie was granted a Diploma of Affiliation by the Superior General, Brother John Joseph Johnston, and his Council in Rome in 1994
