Superwoman’s kryptonite: The superwoman schema and perceived barriers to weight management among U.S. Black women
No full textThe role that the superwoman schema (SWS) plays in U.S. Black women’s perceptions of barriers (biological, psychological, and sociological) to healthy weight management is unknown. This exploratory study examined whether 122 women classified as normal weight, overweight or obese differed in their perceptions of types of barriers and if the SWS predicted perceived barriers to weight management. Women classified as obese reported more barriers than those classified as normal weight. The SWS uniquely positively predicted perceived psychological and sociological barriers. Our findings suggest that the SWS may play a vital role in the self-management of weight in U.S. Black women
Affirming a vital connection: Nonviolence and the disavowal of death as a harm
No full textThough it can be said that having freedom from the fear of death is a quality needed not just by peace activists, it is in particular need of affirmation by those espousing a philosophy of nonviolence. This follows from the commonly offered assertion that violence (be it personal, institutional, or cultural) is required for protecting our lives. While there is a rich philosophical literature exploring the supposed harmfulness of death, the topic is scarcely discussed by peace theorists. In this paper, I will show the significance the topic has for more broadly showing the attractiveness of nonviolent philosophy given certain non-religious understandings of death that are well suited for advancing non-violence.
After establishing this groundwork, I will explore particular criticisms of the well-known Epicurean disavowal of the harmfulness of death and show how the example of Mahatma Gandhi actually provides Epicureans an ally with which to respond to the criticisms discussed. My ultimate aim in the second part of this essay is to more concretely illuminate the implications a rejection of the harmlessness of death has for living non-violently in everyday life

The Importance of Employee Inclusion: Lessons for HR Managers
No full textPurpose- The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the phenomenon, or the lack thereof, of building a culturally inclusive organization, specifically, suggesting this paper will offer tips for Human Resources (“HR”) practitioners in their quest to understand and enhance inclusivity.Design/methodology/approach- This paper is written for practitioners, focusing on ways to foster employee inclusiveness through personal awareness. It includes business and professional rationales for HR practitioners recognizing the need for and the factors impeding employee inclusiveness in the workplace.Findings- Organizations are facing an increasingly dynamic environment in which they must interact with and, possibly, rapidly respond to changes. As competition both domestically and globally increases, progressive organizations recognize ways to retain and grow their talent pool. Not having a robust understanding of diversity, generally, and cultural diversity, specifically, can lead to a less inclusive work environment.Originality/value- This paper discusses the multifaceted nature of diversity and the need to understand cultural diversity. Particularly, how HR practitioners can be a catalyst for organizational change. This paper then proposes practical steps for HR professionals to help improve cultural inclusiveness in their workplaces
Reliability Analysis of Complementary Assessment Tools for Measuring Teacher Candidate Dispositions
No full textAssessing the dispositions of teacher candidates remains a challenge for many Educator Preparation Providers (EPPs). This article details the process and results of establishing the reliability of two complementary instruments, the Candidate Beliefs Self-Assessment Survey (SAS) and the Candidate Dispositions Performance Assessment Rubric (CDPA). The instruments are linked through the same dispositional themes that undergird the indicators in the CDPA and belief statements in the SAS. Internal consistency reliability coefficients were determined using Cronbach’s alpha for SAS (0.81) and the CDPA (0.96). In addition, inter-rater reliability coefficient of 0.80 was determined for CDPA using Intraclass correlation (ICC) method based on one-way random model and absolute agreement. It is argued that using these instruments in tandem, SAS at program entry and CDPA as well as SAS at program exit, offers a viable solution to assessing and monitoring candidates’ development and acquisition of dispositions needed for effective performance in the teaching profession.
