Synthesis of Mono- and Bisperoxide-Bridged Artemisinin Dimers to Elucidate the Contribution of Dimerization to Antimalarial Activity

    No full text
During the past decade, artemisinin as an antimalarial has been in the spotlight, in part due to the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Tu Youyou. While many studies have been completed detailing the significant increase in activity resulting from the dimerization of natural product artemisinin, activity increases unaccounted for by the peroxide bridge have yet to be researched. Here we outline the synthesis and testing for antimalarial activity of artemisinin dimers in which the peroxide bridge in one-half of the dimer is reduced, resulting in a dimer with one active and one deactivated artemisinin moiety

SME Entrepreneurial Orienation, International Performance, and the Moderating Role of Strategic Alliances

    No full text
International entrepreneurship research maintains that firms with strong entrepreneurial orientations expand to international markets to enhance performance. Yet these firms can suffer from resource constraints as they move abroad. To alleviate this problem some research suggests they should participate in strategic alliances. We develop and test a theoretical perspective that merges these ideas, maintaining that firm level entrepreneurial orientation is associated with higher international performance both directly and in combination with participation in foreign market research or marketing alliances. Based on surveys of U.S. and U.K. firms, our findings indicate that SMEs have higher international performance when they possess greater EO and when the type of alliance (research or marketing) used is aligned with the capabilities of the firm. Further we find that participating in alliances strengths the relation between EO and international performance. These results have important implications for managers and policy makers interested in improving SME international performance

Towards smart monitoring of systems: an integrated non-parametric Bayesian KDE and LSTM approach for anomaly detection of rotating machinery under uncertainties

    No full text
The Bayesian inference metric is derived from the normality assumption of data, and is widely used in engineering applications. Owing to data scarcity and uncertainty, the assumption is usually violated, leading to inaccurate results in anomaly detection of large rotating machinery. This paper proposes a novel non-parametric Bayesian evaluation metric based on kernel density estimation of data to avoid the normality assumption. Based on kernel density estimation, a non-parametric Bayesian evaluation metric is mathematically derived from both null and alternative hypothesis tests to improve its accuracy and generality without any distribution assumption. It provides a quantitative indicator for assessing the status of a rotating machines under data uncertainties. A comparison with the traditional method is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed methodology in terms of normal and non-normal distributions of data. A general Bayesian evaluation procedure is proposed for the anomaly detection of rotating machinery. Sensor data collected from a real-world steam turbine were used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

Video-Based Structured Interviews to Assess Managerial Candidates

    No full text
Purpose: Managerial roles require knowledge, skills, and abilities that are difficult to assess during the hiring process. Consequently, hiring an unqualified candidate for a managerial position can result in a disastrous outcome to the organization. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to propose a hiring technique that allow a more accurate assessment of a managerial candidate’s overall skills to aid better hiring decisions.Design/methodology/approach: The proposed technique, video-based structured interviews, shows the interviewee a video clip of a work-related scenario and follow up with standardized questions to assess their ability to both understand the situation and make good decisions.Findings: Compared to verbal situational questions, using video-based scenarios is a more robust and realistic technique as it requires the interviewee to use multiple senses (seeing and hearing) to observe and then respond to a given situation in a way that is closer to how they would encounter it at work.Originality: The proposed video-based structured interview technique enhances the pre-employment assessment process to identify and select managerial employees that has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in their roles. This interview technique, combined with other relevant assessment tools, provides a clearer picture of the candidate’s capabilities.Practical implications: The video-based scenarios can be used as a hybrid technique blending elements of both patterned-behavior-description and situational interview. In addition, this technique can be used to measure a potential manager’s compatibility related to key organizational values such as safety first or quality first
