America’s First Unprofessional Songwriter: Stephen Foster and the Ritual Economy of Copyright in Early American Popular Music
This article explores Stephen Foster’s understanding and use of copyright. It examines what his copyright strategy can reveal about his professionalism as a songwriter and about his worldview as an important influencer of early American popular culture. It adapts the anthropological theory of ritual economy to theorize how Foster’s economic decision making, as revealed in copyright and related business records, can offer material evidence of his worldview. Foster’s failure to secure copyrights for his early work, to establish himself as the author of his most popular songs to the music buying public, and to capitalize upon favorable songwriting contracts are considered. These sources may also illuminate how the precedent Foster set has shaped the discourse on professionalism in American popular music

Dispositional Authenticity and Romantic Relationship Functioning
The present study investigates the extent to which dispositional authenticity is associated with dating couples’ relationship behaviors and outcomes as well as their personal well-being. Sixty two heterosexual couples completed a measure of dispositional authenticity (Kernis & Goldman, 2006), as well as measures of relationship behaviors (e.g., accommodation, self-disclosure, and trust), relationship outcomes, and well-being. Results revealed that authenticity was related to engaging in healthy relationship behaviors, which in turn predicted positive relationship outcomes and greater personal well-being. Interestingly, men’s authenticity predicted women’s relationship behaviors, but women’s dispositional authenticity was not associated with men’s relationship behaviors. The implications of dispositional authenticity and the contribution of gender roles are discussed
Corporate Inversions and Fair Play
A Corporate inversion is a process that a company undergoes to change the domicile of the parent corporation in a multinational corporate conglomerate to a country other than the United States. J. S. Barry (2002) quotes U.S. Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, as saying: "Prominent U.S. companies are literally re-incorporating in off-shore tax havens in order to avoid U.S. taxes. They are, in effect, renouncing their U.S. citizenship to cut their tax bill. This is very troubling, especially now, as we all try to pull together as a nation." Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican member of the Finance Committee, has called inversions "immoral." Stanley Works, a corporation based in Connecticut, planned to re-incorporate in Bermuda. A Democratic Representative from that state, James Maloney, said, "Connecticut hasn't seen such a shameful day since Benedict Arnold sailed away." Stanley Works buckled under political pressure and did not go forward with the planned inversion. This paper addresses the current practice of corporate inversions, and reviews the current legal and political actions taken to address them
