TANGONAN, SANDRA NAOMI (UYEHARA), 71, of Aiea, passed away November 5, 2015. Born April 1,1944 in Honolulu. 
Former teacher of Makaha El. & social worker for the Dept. of Social Services & Housing and Catholic Charities, Sandy 
was a passionate advocate for children and families in need. She received the Nat'l Assoc. of Soc. Workers (NASW) 
Outstanding Achievement Award in the area of Child & Family Welfare in March 1989. In 1996, Sandy initiated efforts 
to separate Social Services from Welfare Services in the State of HI. Sandy, the lead advocate, was able to implement 
and obtain approval through the Legislature for the Department of Human Services to gain 12 additional social worker 
positions. After retirement, Sandy enjoyed frequent visits to Las Vegas and cruising to Asia & Europe. Her greatest joy 
was babysitting her 6 grandchildren. She is survived by husband, Robert; daughters, Christina (Dylan) Kuba, Suzanne 
(Reid) Cummings, Wendy Tangonan (companion, Brian Nomura); nephew, Stephen (Gayle) Uyehara; mother, Helen 
Uyehara & stepdad, Walter Iha; sister, Susan (Clifford) Sagara; grandchildren, Dallas, Madilyn, Dillan, Quintin, Elijah, 
Winston & numerous nephews & nieces. She is preceded in death by dad, Harold Uyehara and siblings, Karen 
Hashimoto, Eugene & Glenn Uyehara. She will be truly missed by family and friends. Visitation is from 5:00 pm with

BRAINE, ALBERT WILLIAM KEAKEALANI, known simply as 'Uncle Al' to many, was born July 25, 1942. On Monday, 
November 30, 2015, surrounded by loved ones, he was called to stand with his ancestors at the age of 73. Son of the 
late Albert Newton and Margaret Kaahumanu Miller Braine, his ancestry and genealogical vine is one that has 'no 
question, no quibblings, no criticisms. His ancestors were not only kings, but kingmakers' ('The Vanishing Regime,' 
Honolulu Advertiser). Albert was great grandson of Robert W. Kalanihiapo and Princess Theresa Owana Kaohelelani 
Laanui Wilcox, whose efforts to support and restore the Hawaiian Monarchy have been recorded in history for all time. 
He was also a direct descendant of Keoua Kalanikupuapaikalaninui of the Keawe line of rulers of Moku o Keawe 
through Keoua’s son, Kalokuokamaile, elder brother of Kamehameha the Great, and his Grandson Kailipalaki Laanui, 
brother of Keka’ani’auokalani Kalaninuiohilaukapu Laanui Pratt (mother of Princess Theresa) 'whose blood was the 
highest of all the islands-Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai.' Albert enjoyed a simple, but very adventurous childhood in the 
Waikiki and Palolo areas with his younger sister and brother. He graduated from Roosevelt High School under the 
English Standard System, and was a very educated and well-read individual. He served in the United States Army and 
was honorably discharged in 1968. He then worked for the Army National Guard before applying to the Hawaiian 
Electric Co., where he started in Waiau as a lineman and eventually retired at the age of 50 as a Systems Operations 
Supervisor on Ward Ave. Al Braine was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed 
taking his family on various adventures. He liked traveling internationally, but loved no destinations more than the 
Hawaii Islands and Tahiti. He cared for the people and the islands of Tahiti so much that he learned to speak their 
language. At the same time, he was proud to be Hawaiian and very proud of his heritage, his kupuna, his parents, and 
most of all his wife, children, and grandchildren. Albert had various interesting hobbies, most notably, he was a 
collector of wondrous things: cars, bottles, antiques, books (especially Hawaiian books), and much more. And as 
anyone who ever had the pleasure of spending time with Albert knows, he was a well-versed and animated storyteller. 
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Naomi Wahinekaupua Braine; his children Angela Kapuanani (Albert) 
Medeiros, Andrea Aulani (Ben) Largent, Alexandria Kauiokeanuenue Byous, Albert Harold (Linda) Braine and Clarence 
Medeiros; his brother, Harold N. (Jeannie) Braine and sisters Margaret 'Stevie' (Harold) DeMello and Leilani (Ivan) 
Holmes; 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Hawaiian memorial Park

SMITH, RICHARD CASE, Honolulu native Dick Smith died in Santa Barbara, CA November 30, 2015 after a brief illness. A 
descendant of Charles J. Wall, one of the architects who designed Iolani Palace, Dick was born at Kapiolani Maternity 
Hospital August 3, 1932. Dick was the oldest son of Dudley Wall Smith and Elizabeth McClean Case. Dick grew up on 
Kahala Ave., moving to Lurline Drive on Maunalani Heights during the war. A 1950 Punahou graduate, Dick played JV 
football and was football manager his senior year. His main sports love was baseball, playing American Legion ball and 
catcher on the Punahou varsity his junior and senior years. After graduation, Dick attended Princeton University on an 
NROTC scholarship. While serving three years in the Navy, Dick met and married Marion Larimore 'Larie' Elliott of 
Sherman Oaks, CA They settled in Manhattan Beach and Dick worked for Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles 
and, after a transfer in 1972, Santa Barbara. In 1987 he started working for Santa Barbara Bank and Trust until his 
retirement in 1994. Dick loved his family, baseball, golf and traveling with his wife. After retirement he and Larie would 
make annual trips to England and Scotland, playing golf at the courses that are the home of the British Open He is 
survived by his wife of sixty years, and his sons, Rick and Camille of San Diego, Doug and Angela of Culver City and 
daughter Judy Milam and Steve of Goleta and his four wonderful grand- children Ginny and Case Smith and Jordan and 
Ali Milam. He is also survived by his brother, Christopher 'Kit' Smith and sister in law Margie of Honolulu and nieces 
Susanne Smith and Sandra Bramhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society 
in remembrance of Dick and his niece, Patty Smith. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m., August 3 at Oahu Cemetery.

heartfelt gratitude to American Airlines Management, Shop 2602 and Shop 2605 for their kindness and support during 
Lance's illness. We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to Steve Louis (Crew Chief) for extending himself to care 
for Lance during his doctor appointments and recuperation ensuring Lance was comfortable and had daily meals during 
his recovery. They would also like to thank Susan Severson for her assistance to care for Lance alongside Hospice 
during his final days. A big Mahalo to the flight crew of American Airlines for their compassion and thoughtfulness

NELSON, GREG, March 27, 1953 - Feb. 2, 2015 Palo Alto, California Submitted by Sharon Perl Greg Nelson (born Charles 
Gregory Nelson), a longtime Palo Alto resident, died on Feb. 2, 2015, after a 17-year battle with brain cancer. Greg 
grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he attended the University Laboratory School. He moved to the mainland to 
attend college and graduate school. He lived in Juneau, Alaska, for a year before settling permanently in the Bay Area. 
Greg received his B.A. degree in mathematics from Harvard in 1976, and his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford 
University in 1980, where he worked under the supervision of Bob Tarjan on program verification and algorithms for 
automatic theorem proving. As an undergraduate at Harvard, he invented a method of combining decision procedures 
for different logical theories into a decision procedure for the combination of the theories (often called the 'Nelson-
Oppen method') that has become influential in the automatic theorem-proving community. In 2013 he received the 
Herbrand Award for Distinguished Contributions to Automated Reasoning for his pioneering contributions to theorem 
proving and program verification. Greg was a Renaissance computer scientist, combining a deep understanding of 
mathematics and theory with a strong ability to design and implement systems. He brought his passion for precision 
and correctness to all of the work he did. He made significant contributions in the areas of programming language 
design (as a member of the Modula-3 committee), distributed systems (Network Objects), constraint-based graphics 
editors (Juno and Juno-2), window systems (Trestle), optimal code generation (Denali), and multi-threaded 
programming (Eraser). He had a profound influence on the many students who he hosted for internships and advised 
on their thesis research, as well as the many colleagues with whom he collaborated throughout his professional career, 
first at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and later at DEC's Systems Research Center and HP's research laboratories. 
He was a brilliant researcher and teacher. His commitment to excellence, evidenced in his own work, inspired others to 
do the same. Greg loved being physically active. As a boy he excelled at gymnastics and tennis, and enjoyed body 
surfing. He loved being in the mountains and in the wilderness, hiking, backpacking, skiing and kayaking. His favorite 
sport was volleyball, and he regularly played in pick-up games until the brain tumor recurrence made that impossible. 
For many years at the research labs where he worked he organized weekly volleyball games for the staff and interns, 
which was a great opportunity for people to get out from behind their screens into the fresh air, get some exercise and 
socialize. He encouraged people of all abilities to play, and created a fun environment that fostered both good 
sportsmanship and development of skills. Greg had many interests. He enjoyed playing pool, poker, backgammon, 
chess, cooking, ballroom dancing, traveling, hosting dinner parties, spending time with friends and family, and learning 
about new things. He was a lifelong reader, spending many hours every week at the library. He was equally likely to be 
found reading an economics or physics textbook as a book on history, or a biography, or a novel. A well-used copy of 
The Random House Unabridged Dictionary was usually by his side. In addition to his intellectual brilliance, Greg will be 
remembered for his adventurous spirit, humor, modesty, personal integrity, kindness, generosity, courage and 
optimism. The latter two qualities were especially evident in the last few years as he faced his illness with an 
equanimity and grace that inspired all who knew him. Even as the illness took away his ability to enjoy so many of the 
things he loved, Greg was grateful for what he had, and that he lived to see his daughter graduate from high school and 
start college. Greg is survived by his wife, Sharon Perl, and daughter, Julia Nelson, of Palo Alto; brothers, David Nelson 
(married to Loretta) and Michael Nelson (married to Karen); and mother, Alice Nelson of Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 
preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Nelson; his brother Richard Nelson; and twin sons, Adam and Andrew, 
who died in infancy. A memorial gathering will be held at the Stanford Faculty Club at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. 
Friends, family, and colleagues are welcome to join us in celebrating Greg's life. Memorial donations may be made to
