NAKAMURA, BISHOP DWIGHT RYOKAN, Retired Bishop Dwight Ryokan Nakamura quietly entered Nirvana on March 
23, 2015 in Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was 88. Born Takeo Nakamura on 
June 6, 1926 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Ordained as a Jodo-shu Buddhist minister he was given the name 
Ryokan. He first came to Hawaii in 1954 as a missionary devoted to rebuilding Jodo Buddhism in Hawaii. His ministry 
began at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii; resident minister at Kurtistown Jodo Mission (1956 -1964) and Hilo Meishoin 
Mission (1964 -1980). Served as Bishop of the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions for 10 years until his retirement in 1990. 
Returned to his native Japan where he was appointed resident minister at Seikyuji Temple in Shiga and Tokuunji 
Temple in Aihi and as Abbot of the historical Daijuji Temple in Okazaki, the official memorial to the Shogunate Ieyasu 
Tokugawa. In September 2003, Ryokan was nominated and accepted to become the Bishop of the Hawaii Council of 
Jodo Missions for the second time. He returned to Hawaii to devote his final life's period to perpetuate the Jodo 
Buddhist movement in Hawaii. During his tenure as Bishop and over 60 years of scholarly labor in the quiet moments 
that punctuated a grueling round of priestly and administrative duties he produced a steady stream of articles, 
sermons, letters and translations and found time not only to participate in a wide range of community affairs, but also 
to give religious instruction and spiritual counsel to anyone who sought them. Over his career he officiated countless 
weddings, blessings, memorial services and funerals as well as broadcast over 1500 radio sermons and taught religion 
classes at the local universities. He served as President of the Hawaii Buddhist Council and was actively involved in the 
Hawaii Association of International Buddhists (HAIB) movement. Survived by daughters Chandra (Ronald) Kanemaru of 
Honolulu & Dana Nakamura of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; grandson Kellan Kubo (Jennifer Aquino) & great 
grandson Kolten Kubo of Las Vegas, Nevada; granddaughter Carly Kanemaru of Aiea; brothers Takao (Keiko) Oshima, 
Masaomi (Tomiko) Nakamura, Yukio (Shizuko) Nakamura & sisters Michiko Omori & Kazuko Shibagaki of Nagoya, Japan 
and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death: wife of 35 years, Edith Namiye (Kida) Nakamura & son Earnest

hospice home in Kailua. Born in Kolofo'ou, Tonga, he was owner and president of Look Sharp Tonga, Ltd and KavaBoy. 
Devoted to his church, he was the chairman of the board of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga in USA. Taua 
graduated from Farrington and attended Leeward Community College and the seminary at Claremont College. He was 
crazy about rugby and played with the Hawaii Harlequins and was selected to play at the World Cup in New Zealand 
with the Hawaii USA team. He loved the ocean and would regularly swim the waters near Lanikai Boat Ramp. Taua was 
famous for his BBQs and loved his sashimi. Quite a green thumb, he planted pikake, gardenia, plumeria and his favorite 
puakenikeni for his wife so they could enjoy the beautiful fragrance in the soft breeze. He is survived by his wife of 27 
years, Shirley Teruya Kuma; daughters: Sarah Kahelelani Hatsue Kuma, Anela Freeman, Ana Maria Kuma; son: Pala

Employee Benefit Specialists. He retired in 1987 from Dillingham Corporation, where he was Employee Benefits 
Manager. Prior to that, he worked at Love's Bakery and Foodland. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juliette; sons 
Elliot and Ellery (Heidi); daughter Jennifer Lum-Ota (Gerald); sister Mary Lum Ching; and grandchildren Benjamin and 
Daniel Ota, and Matthew and Noah Lum. For over 60 years, George and Juliette were members of the Community 
Church of Honolulu, where he served as President and member of the church council for many years. George served on 
the Hawaii Prepaid Health Care Advisory Council and boards of Palolo Chinese Home, Chinese Chamber of Commerce,

Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, 2003 Outstanding Male Senior Citizen of Oahu, and 2003 Outstanding Older

away on April 12, 2015 at the home of her caregivers: daughter, Gwen and son-in-law, Clayton Fujie. Born on June 28, 
1920 in Hakalau, Hawaii, she was a retired seamstress from the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base and a member of Yomitan 
Sonjinkai. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toshio, and son, Gary. Along with daughter, Gwen (Clayton) 
Fujie, she is survived by her sons, Miles (Harriet) and Guy (Michelle) Nishizawa, daughter, Geri (Jim) Baenen, sister, 
Joyce Uehara, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Beatrice was an avid reader and gardener and enjoyed 
Okinawan and Hawaiian music. She continued sewing well into her 90's. She was a great cook who hosted many 
gatherings. Devoted to her family, she also supported her late husband's 522 FAB and 442nd RCT Veterans activities. 
On May 7th at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, visitation will start at 5:00 pm followed by a celebration of life service at 6:00
