Oregon. She was the daughter of the late Marcus Dent Dugan and the late Margaret Estelle Hertzel. She grew up in 
Molalla, Oregon, graduated from Molalla High School in 1960, and San Bernardino Valley College in 1965. She was a 
nurse for over forty years in multiple hospitals throughout California, Oregon, and Hawaii. She loved and enjoyed 
horses and the outdoors, dancing, shopping, the ocean, and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, 
Marcus and Margaret. She is survived by her sister Darlene Rees, her seven children, Doug, Kelly, Tara, Cherri, Ann,

Bernardo / rbernardo@staradvertiser.com Kumu hula Moodette Ka’apana perpetuated the art of hula and the Native 
Hawaiian culture in Seattle, where she was revered by many. Ka’apana died April 7 in Seattle. She was 60. Born and 
raised in Kailua, Ka’apana, affectionately known as 'Auntie Moody,' moved to Seattle after she graduated from Sacred 
Hearts Academy in 1972. She attended Seattle University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. 
Friends and family say hula was her passion. As a youngster she was part of Maiki Aiu Lake’s halau in Honolulu. She 
participated in hula competitions and taught hula to students at Seattle University. In 1989 she opened Pulamahia Hula 
Academy. She studied under kumu hula Mae Kamamalu Klein and became a kumu hula in the summer of 
994.\0x2008Ka’apana also helped her sister, Jaydeen Robinson, become a kumu hula. Her husband, Douglas, described 
her as very giving. 'She gave with a lot of aloha,' he said in a phone interview from Seattle. Longtime friend Stephen 
Gomes — who co-hosted a radio show, 'Hawaii Radio Connection,' on KBCS 91.3 FM and KXPA 1540 AM in Seattle, with 
Ka’apana — said she was a smart and fun-loving person. She had a wonderful sense of humor, he added. Ka’apana was 
among the first students of hula in Washington state to attain the title of kumu hula, according to Gomes. 'We 
benefited tremendously from her acumen, from what she was able to learn and teach,' said Gomes, who moved to 
Washington from Hawaii in 1991. 'She taught me the Hawaiian culture,' he added. 'She taught me about how 
important it is to do things pono, to do things the right way.' Gomes said she wanted to make sure younger 
generations of Hawaiians born and raised in Seattle learn about their culture. Friends and family say Ka’apana will be 
best remembered for her giving nature. 'She touched so many lives,' Gomes said. Ka’apana is also survived by daughter

KAAPANA, MOODETTE LEIMOMI KELIIHOOMALU, Moodette, also known as Aunty Moody, died April 7 in Seattle. She 
was 60 years old. Born and raised in Kailua, 1972 graduate and class president of SHA. President of Hawaiian club. From 
age 10 to college she learned hula, lei and costume making, Hawaiian language and hula protocols from Kumu Hula 
Maiki Aiu Lake and Kumu Hula Mae Kamamalu Klein. She was a summer instructor for Hawaiian culture programs at 
Chaminade University. Hula was her passion. Graduate of Seattle University she taught hula to the university members 
for 10 years after graduating. She opened Pulamahia Hula Academy in 1989. She graduated in a traditional uniki 
ceremony June 1994 as a Kumu from Halau Hula Kulalehuaikaohu under the direction of Kumu Hula Mae Kamamalu 
Klein. As Halau Hula Pulamahiakalikolehua entered competitions, they continued to take top honors from 1984 in 
Kahiko, Auana and Hawaiian Language. She was a guest instructor of traditional and modern hula to Dance School 
students as part of a degree requirement for World Dance and Cultures at the University of Washington. Past President 
of the Wakinikona Hawaiian Club in Seattle. Also, Hawaiian music promoter. For 20 years she co-hosted Hawaii Radio 
Connection on KCBS 91-3 FM and KXPA 1540 AM with Executive Producer Stephen Gomes. Besides Hawaiian music, 
they shared the language, history, geography, and stories of Hawaii with their listeners around the world. She 
produced Hawaiian culture concerts and organized Hawaiian culture workshops in Seattle and Hawaii, and prepared 
participants for World Hula Conferences. She also provided hula demonstrations to local schools and organizations for 
their cultural diversity events, and offered workshops for Hawaiian artisans for the Northwest community. She was a 
program coordinator for the Annual Northwest Folklife Festival held at Seattle Center. She assisted in implementing the 
Hawaiian culture showcase at the festival for the past 22 years, and has continued to maintain the highly acclaimed 
performance showcase which remains an integral part of the festival. She was a Special Programs Billing Secretary-
Transportation Department and Finance Technician; also the Chairperson of Professional Growth Fund Committee for 
the Highline School District. Survived by husband Douglas; daughter Kalehua; mother Evelyn Keliihoomalu; brother 
Moody III; sisters Cathy Keliihoomalu, Tracy Keliihoomalu and Jaydeen Keliihoomalu Robinson. Gathering at St.

HOSINO, THERESA LOPEZ, Was born on June 16, 1919 in Wailea, Hawaii to Manuel and Salvadora Morales Lopez. Her 
parents had emigrated from the Malaga region of Spain with their young son in 1913 to start a new life in the Islands. 
Their 13,553 mile journey to Honolulu on the British ship Willesden took nearly 2 months and they eventually settled 
on the Big Island in Honomu where Manuel worked at the Hakalau Sugarcane Plantation. Theresa was the 4th of 7 
more children born to Salvadora and Manuel, 6 of whom survived and they also adopted a daughter. The Lopez couple 
raised their 8 children to value ohana and the importance of community service. As a girl, Theresa attended school 
through the 8th grade in Wailea and since she excelled at cooking, she took on responsibility to provide family meals 
and bread. She met the love of her life, Manuel Hosino, while visiting her brother on Kauai in the summer of 1939. 
They married at a small ceremony on Kauai in 1940 and then settled in Kalihi Valley where they raised their family 
(Raymond T., Carol Dean, Billie Lyn, and Patricia Ann). Manuel worked as a crane operator and Theresa was always 
surrounded by children. For many years, she was a foster parent for children with special needs, many of whom called 
her 'Arbuela'. Theresa was a woman of many talents. Her interactions with the diverse cultures of the Big Island 
plantations enabled her to speak four languages. As a young woman, she took an interest in fashion and became an 
accomplished seamstress working for Alfred Shaheen. Her family became used to wearing the latest styles and a 
chartreuse dress made for her daughter Carol's eight birthday was featured in the local news. Theresa worked as a chef 
at the Saint Francis Convent and Kamehameha Schools where her tireless, industrial strength cooking fed the masses. 
Her signature paella was the highlight of many gatherings and her legendary sweet bread was a local favorite. Seeking 
their family roots with her sister Annie in Malaga Spain was a highlight of Theresa's life adventures. In 1995, on a trip 
with Annie, her daughters and granddaughters, they matched old family photos and reconnected in a joyful celebration 
with 35 living relatives. Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, her son, her parents, her brothers Frank, 
Gregory, John, Manuel, and her sisters Ramona, Annie, Isabelle. Theresa is survived by her sister Maria, her daughters 
and their spouses, Carol Caspillo (Ray Caspillo), Billie Lyn (Alani Hi'iakaikapoliopele), Patricia Urbano (Ed Urbano), as 
well as 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and a host of friends and extended family. 
Theresa believed in sharing her resources and good fortune. She would be the first to help those in need and once 
hosted a stranded Israeli family. Her gracious hospitality, generosity and community outreach will be an enduring part 
of her legacy. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, May 12 at the Lady of the Mount Catholic 
Church, 1614 Monte St., Honolulu 96819. Viewing will be at 10:15, Mass at 11:30 and lunch to follow. [Honolulu Star-

lengthy battle with cancer and multiple sclerosis. Dawn was born on June 12, 1950, in Pocatello, Idaho, the daughter of 
the late Harold and Colleen Hobson and stepfather the late Duane Oakes. Dawn graduated from Kaimuki High School 
and later attended Leeward Community College and UH West Oahu, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in 
Literature in December 2010. She was an active member and president of the Humanities Club where she went on trips 
to Paris, Italy and New York. She was a member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church. Dawn started working for 
Woolworths during her senior year of high school then for First Hawaiian Bank for 19 years. After her youngest son was 
born, she decided to stay at home to care for her children. When her children were in intermediate school she started 
working for American Savings Bank for about 10 years. Dawn was a caring wife and mother. She was a very active 
member in her community. She would volunteer and read books to the kids at Kanoelani Elementary School. She 
coached both of her children's soccer teams and was very active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scout Organization for 11 
years. Dawn is survived by her care-giving husband, Winters Mizuuchi; sons, Daniel Mizuuchi and Michael (Amber) 
Mizuuchi; her step daughter, Lisa (Ted) Peck; her step son Sean (Jocelyn) Mizuuchi; her mother, Colleen Oakes; her 
brothers, Michael (Rebecca) Hobson, Dana (Debra) Oakes and Mark Oakes; niece Elena Oakes; four grandchildren, Kara

on to earn associate degrees in welding technology and air frame and power plant at Honolulu Community College. He 
had a pilots license for small planes and loved working for local cargo airlines. He then went to work for, and retired 
from, United Airlines as a technician in their engine shop at the San Francisco technical operations center. Roger loved 
his job and enjoyed working on cars, building a small airplane, flying RC planes and helicopters, riding motorcycles, and 
fishing. He served in the Hawaii National Guard and the Air Force Reserve in California. He was a devoted Christian and 
actively served in church in men's ministry. Roger enjoyed life to its fullest, and was easygoing and lighthearted even 
while enduring declining health. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by loving parents Patricia and Richard 
Buchanan, brother Rodney (Joyce), brother Randy, sister Patty Takebayashi (Darrell), three nieces, two nephews, a 
grandniece, and dear friends Chris Farron, Charlene Krakowsky, Leila Garcia, and Donna Hodges. Although this is a time 
of sadness, for the believer and follower of Jesus the Christ, there is joy and hope, knowing that he is in heaven and

MILLER, ROSAMOND H., of Aiea, Hawaii May 22, 1943 To June 14, 2015 Rosamond Heroy Miller lived her life with 
happiness, grace and resilience. She had a quiet but powerful faith, and a deep love for her family and friends. These 
qualities carried her through life and into a peaceful death in Honolulu on June 14, 2015. Ros was born May 22, 1943, 
in New York City, to Dr. William Ward and Rosamond Lee Heroy. She was the second of what would become a family of 
six girls. Ros loved babies and children, truly. She worked at the New York Foundling Hospital, and after graduating 
from Marymount Junior College, Va., she worked in the Head Start early childhood education program. Ros and her 
loving husband Tom had a remarkable life together. They met in Washington, D.C., in 1969, where Tom, who was a 
Vietnam vet in the US Navy, was a White House aide. They were married Sept. 12, 1970. He was a seagoing officer, 
commanding officer, a political affairs specialist, and a State Department official in his career. Ros's daughter Rossie 
('Iolani, '89 of Hilo) and son Ward ('Iolani '92, of Saudi Arabia) - with Tom - were the center of her world, and she took 
to mothering naturally, raising her family as Tom's career took them from D.C., to Japan and other stops along the way. 
They ended up in Hawaii, and there they stayed when Tom retired from the Navy as Executive Assistant to 
Commander - Chief -Pacific as a Captain. Tom became Director of Pacific Forum, CIS, and later Headmaster of 'Iolani 
School, where Ros carried out the duties of being a faculty wife and headmaster's wife with her characteristic warmth 
and good humor. There wasn't a pretentious bone in her body. Everybody loved Ros. Ros and Tom enjoyed adventure 
travel and had many excursions to Africa, Egypt, China, Southeast Asia and Latin America, to name a few. Ros loved 
nature and was thrilled with the wildlife and cultures they saw on their travels. She was curious, and thrived on detail 
and how people were treated. In Hawaii, Ros continued her work with children at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women 
and Children, where she volunteered for 23 years, having responsibilities caring for and playing with young patients. 
She also gave orientation tours of the hospital for children's groups. She had a beautiful smile and the gift of putting 
everyone at ease, according to Lisa Chung, Director of Volunteer Services. She also was a foster mother for several 
years, providing love and stability to newborn babies for a short while before having to let them go to adoptive 
parents. Ros and Tom have two beautiful grandchildren, Sofie and Mukan Helms, who were the light of her life in 
recent years. She was their beloved 'Tutu.' She enjoyed swimming, loved her kitties and was a wicked Yahtzee player. 
Ros managed her rheumatoid arthritis with extraordinary patience, resourcefulness and courage, admired by all, which 
allowed her to live a full and happy life. The family thanks all her wonderful doctors and other medical staff throughout 
the years, and especially those who cared for her in her final days. Her 'Dr. Hen' was Dr. David John, her 
rheumatologist. Ros was a grounding force for all of us and we will miss her deeply, but we know she will be with us in 
spirit. Survivors include her husband Tom Miller, daughter Rossie (Eric) Helms, son Ward (Dawn) Miller, grandchildren 
Sofie and Mukan Helms, sisters Sally Munday, Jane (Tom) Winn, Helen (Fred) Cuccia, Molly (Paul) Missonis and Chris 
(Mike) Henry, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Donations in her memory may be made to Kapiolani 
Medical Center's playroom, www.hawaiipacifichealth.org/kapiolani. Services will be at 8:30 a.m. June 27, at Sts. Peter

LEE, WENDELL 'DADDY BOY' KAAHIKI, of Pearl City, a retired NCTAMS EASTPAC tele- communication operator and Air 
Force veteran, departed this earthly life at home with family by his side on 30 June, 2015. He is survived by his eternal 
wife of 49 years, Carol (Luka). He was born and raised in Hoolehua, Molokai and graduated from Molokai High and 
Intermediate School in 1956, as president of his senior class. He is survived by his daughters, Keala and Malia; 7 grand- 
children, Makana Roman, Kahema Dumlao, Walter 'Eha' Shoaf, Kaahiki and Sanoe Lee, Tenley and Zooey Akutagawa; 
sister, Leah (Mike) Ellis; Sister- in-law, JoyAnn 'Sugar' (Reynold) Fujimoto; Brother-in-laws, Carlton (Linda) and Douglas 
(Jan) Luka; many many nephews and nieces from near and far. He is preceded in death by brothers; William (Lagrimas) 
Lee, Wilford (Jane) Lee, Walter (Pearl) Lee, Benson (Toni) Lee and sisters; Moana and Betty Jean Lee. He has been an 
active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club, and The 
Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club. His hobbies were playing and singing with a ukulele and being a volunteer with the 
Military Auxiliary Radio System, or MARS, as an amateur radio operator. We will be celebrating his life Thursday, 16 
July, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Newton Chapel. Visitation will be from 8:30-10:00 a.m. 
followed by the Memorial Service at 10:00 a.m. His pa`ina will commence thereafter, with Graveside services at the 
HAWAII STATE VETERANS CEMETERY in Kane`ohe at 2:00 p.m. Aloha attire. Flowers welcome. Condolences:
