FROISETH, ALICE KEALIIPUAIMOKU 'AUNTY MOKU', May 7, 1930- July 29, 2015, 85, passed away on July 30, 2015, with 
her 3 daughters by her side at their home in Kaimuki. Born in Maui, and raised by her aunt and uncle, Aunty Moku 
moved to Honolulu to go to school at Scared Hearts Convent. She married the 'Love of Her Life' Wallace F. Froiseth and 
raised 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. She was a very devoted wife and wanted to follow her husband who passed on June 
29, 2015, so her husband came to get her to be by his side Forever. Known as Uncle Wally he always told her 'We'll 
Always be Together' and now they are 'Forever Together'. 'Aunty Moku' meet Uncle Wally on the beach of Waikiki. He 
was out tandem surfing with another girl and saw Moku standing on the shoreline fronting the old Waikiki Tavern. He 
asked a friend if he would take his partner, so he could tandem surf with Moku. He came to shore an told her' Hey 
girlie want to go tandem surfing with me'. She fell for him right then and there. From that time on she never left his 
side. Uncle Wally and Aunty Moku as they are affectionately known to all, helped start Waikiki Surf Club a well known 
canoe club. Uncle Wally would coach the paddlers and Aunty Moku would cook for them and make sure everything 
was ok. Aunty Moku did all sort of things for the club also filling in as secretary, treasurer and eventually becoming the 
club president in 1977 and never letting go until her passing. They both are charter members of Waikiki Surf Club, who 
they both loved so much. There legacy will 'Live on Forever'' in the club. Uncle Wally built a koa canoe with his 
daughter Luana, and when ask what he would name the Koa canoe he said 'Tutu' after his beloved wife which he called 
'Tutu'. In the early 1950's Aunty Moku and Uncle Wally helped start the first International Surfing Championships at 
Makaha Beach. Uncle Wally being a surfer was in the contest and also being head judge with Aunty Moku following 
him as head recorder. This contest was the foundation of professional surfing today. Together they helped the 
Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association organize into one of the biggest canoe associations in the world. In the late 60's 
they helped create an island wide canoe association today known as the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. She 
helped with being an HCRA official, OHCRA official, co-chaired Blue Hawaiian Moonlight (a Hawaiian Concert at the 
Shell), secretary of weighing and water lining committee and anything that needed to be done aunty Moku was always 
willing and able to help.. Aunty Moku along with Lei Faria and Hannie Anderson, helped put together the first Women's 
Molokai to Oahu Crossing in 1975, which today is known as the Hawaiian Airlines Na Wahine O Ke Kai Molokai to Oahu 
Canoe Race. While Uncle Wally was a coach for one of the team's Onipa'a, which consisted of paddlers from Waikiki 
Surf Club, Kailua Canoe Club, Lanikai Canoe Club and Outrigger Canoe Club, she did all the cooking and arrangements 
for the women. In 1952 Uncle Wally helped create the first ever canoe race from one island to the other which today is 
known as the Hawaiian Airlines Molokai Hoe Canoe Race again Aunty Moku was right there cooking for the men and 
making sure all logistic were done. Aunty Moku and Uncle Wally helped build Hokule'a and Hawaii Loa. They were 
Polynesian Voyage Society Board member till the end. As Uncle Wally sailed to various islands, Aunty Moku was always 
catching an airplane to catch up with him somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, 'Never Leaving his Side'. Aunty Moku and 
Uncle Wally your Love will 'Forever Be in Our Hearts' 'We will always Love you and Cherish the Memories you shared 
with us'. Mahalo Aunty Moku and Uncle Wally for giving us Waikiki Surf Club. Sweet Sailing and Aloha Oe to both of 
you. Survived By: Malia Ann Tongg (deceased,) Teene' A. Froiseth, Tina C. Dumaran (Ben), Luana Froiseth (Richline 
Fong), Leiola Demello (Derrell), grandchildren: Malissa K. Kaaawa (Mike), Kainalu Froiseth, Makani Froiseth, Benjamin

JENSEN, JANET I. of Honolulu died in Straub Hospital on October 31, 2015. An enthusiastic adventurer, she left us for 
her aloha trip with the love of her life Greg Tully and beloved close friends at her side. Janet was born in Salt Lake City, 
Utah, and grew up on the family ranch near Blackfoot, Idaho, where she won national awards with her 4H work. 
Pursuing her love for adventure, she moved to Honolulu when she was 18, took a waitress job, and entered the 
University of Hawaii, eventually opening and running her own successful CPA business, where she practiced until her 
retirement in 2014. Besides working at her practice, she taught at the Honolulu Board of Realtors, and the Hawaii 
Association of Public Accountants, as well as supporting numerous charities. While Hawaii remained Janet's home 
base, she travelled extensively, with focus on the exotic, adventurous, and sometimes grueling---climbing mountains, 
trekking, hiking, sailing, and always investigating the unusual or obscure. Many of these adventures were with her 
companion Greg, but some also turned into girl trips or expeditions, all of which resulted in a treasure trove of tales to 
tell. In addition to her lifelong companion Greg Tully and their hanai family of feral cats, Janet is survived by her sister 
Susan Singer Jensen (Paul) of Santa Barbara, Ca., her brother Jerrold Jensen (Nannette) of Visalia Ca. niece Jennifer 
Marcou, nephew Michael Jensen, her beloved clients, and a far-reaching, large, and many-branched extended family. 
As a result of her full life, her extended ohana was wide-spread and varied, and she will be sorely missed by all whose

YAMAMOTO, TROY T., 78, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in San Francisco on Saturday, October 31, 2015. She 
was born on January 27, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Masaru and Kameyo (Okamoto) Morimoto. For more than 40 
years, Troy was a talented homemaker, maintaining an extremely organized home that was also warm, inviting, and 
comfortable. She was savvy, astute, and sharp skillfully managing all of the responsibilities to keep her household 
running well. Troy attended Farrington High School, where she met Richard ('Ricky') Yamamoto at a school mixer in 
1953. She was a sophomore, he was a junior. They danced that first night, continued to talk on the telephone and got 
to know each other, and something began to develop. 'It was slow,' said Ricky. In June 1959, Troy and Ricky married in 
Honolulu, the day after he graduated from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Troy had already graduated with a degree 
in personnel management, and was working as a statistician for the juvenile courts of the State of Hawaii. Later that 
year, they moved to San Francisco where Troy worked in the business department of the Pacific Telephone and 
Telegraph Company. Troy was strong-willed and had a point of view. Once she decided on something, there would be 
no chance in arguing about it. She used that same strength to care for those around her. She was fiercely loyal and 
always kind and thoughtful. She remembered everyone's birthday, anniversary, and other occasions and each became 
a special event. She had the gifted ability to see and appreciate the unique qualities of her friends and family members. 
As a child, Troy found a love of baseball and Ted Williams and became a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. Later on, she 
helped introduce the game to her nieces, supporting them to become San Francisco Giants fans at an early age. She 
was a hands-on aunt with her nieces and nephews, hosting 'sleepovers' and playing puzzles with them when they were 
children, and following their progress and achievements. She also enjoyed travel, especially to Europe and Japan, and 
was an avid collector of teddy bears. Troy is survived by her husband, Ricky; two sisters, Evelyn (Yuichi) Marumoto and 
Karen (Roy) Sakai; a brother, Melvin (Eileen) Morimoto; and many nieces and nephews. Troy was preceded in death by 
her brothers Stanley, Kenneth, and Clarence. Family, friends, and others whose lives Troy touched are invited to a 
memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at Pacific Interment, 2100 Folsom Street, San Francisco. Her 
ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony on Saturday, November 21. [Honolulu Star-Advertiser 12

DUNN, THOMAS PAUL passed away suddenly in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 12, 2015. He was 67 years old. Tom 
grew up in Sioux Falls, SD. He attended college at the University of South Dakota and was a member of the Delta Tau 
Delta fraternity. As a junior Tom transferred to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. from which he graduated. 
Tom then attended and graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973. Tom is preceded in death by his 
parents, Justice Francis and Eldred (Betty) Dunn. He is survived by his brother, David of Pierre, SD and two sisters: 
Rebecca Dunn of Sioux Falls, SD and Carol (John) Norbeck of Lakewood, WA. Tom will be especially missed by girlfriend, 
Barinna Poon and her daughter Karen Poon, his Godson Ian Scheuring all of Honolulu and Maria (Tribble) O'Donnell of 
VA. He also leaves a niece, Carrie Norbeck LaDoux, 2 nephews Judson and Joshua Dunn and other beloved grand nieces 
and nephews. Tom was past President of St. Andrews Cathedral Foundation and served for many years as usher. A 
memorial celebration of Thomas' life will be held at St. Andrews Cathedral on January 16, 2016 at 10:30 am. In lieu of

WALKER, BETTY ANN passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Dec. 12th. She was born in Albuquerque, 
New Mexico to Jimmy and Alice Bush on Oct. 24, 1925. She moved to Southern California as a baby and lived in 
Manhattan Beach and then Huntington Beach before moving to Hawaii 8 years ago to be closer to her daughter and 
her family. Betty was an avid runner and attributed her long healthy life to her love of running. She was happiest when 
doing for others, and enjoyed being involved with many different organizations, South Bay Hospital, Girl Scouts, Little 
League, The Assistance League of Huntington Beach, Castle Hospital and as a full time volunteer for many years with 
the Huntington Beach Jr. Life Guards. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Ronnie Walker. She is survived by her 
son Craig (DeeRay) Walker, and her daughter Melissa (Charles) Aiona. Grandchildren Chris Walker, Heather (Dan) 
Meronk, Tiffany (Davidson) Brooks and Tiger (Carrie) Hill and great grandchildren Keanu, Bronson, Teah, Selah, 
Samson, Shine, Seven, Abraham and Eden. Please join us as we celebrate a life well lived Jan 2nd 10:00 am at Pohai 
Nani Retirement home in Kaneohe; her ash scattering to follow on Sunday morning at 8:00 A.M.at the Kailua Canoe

HANNEMANN, AFIMUTASI 'GUS', JR., 78, of Hawaii Kai, Director of American Samoa Government’s Hawaii Office 
passed away peacefully on the evening of January 2, 2015. American Samoa’s Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga described 
Hannemann’s passing as 'a big loss for us' [ because ] he touched a lot of lives … in a lot of ways…He was a go- getter … 
Everything he did was for others.' Throughout his life, Hannemann was regarded as the voice and face of the Samoan 
community as he spearheaded numerous causes to benefit all age groups and was an articulate and effective 
spokesperson. According to younger sibling Mufi Hannnemann, former Mayor of Honolulu, 'no was not in my brother’s 
vocabulary when it came to helping people – the bigger the challenge the more he rose to the occasion to get the job 
done. He was the quintessential community leader.' Born on Christmas day in the village of Nu’uuli, American Samoa, 
Gus was the eldest son of the late Gustav Arthur Tafu Tupulo Hannemann Sr., and Faiaso Cecilia Dale Soliai 
Hannemann. His paternal grandmother, Rosie Young Hannemann, was the younger sister of Queen Makalita, Samoa’s 
last reigning monarch of the Manua Islands. On his maternal side, he was the great-grandson of Paramount Chief 
Muliufi Pinemua Soliai, one of the original signatories of the deed of cession that ceded Eastern Samoa and eventually 
the Manua Islands to the United States of America. In 2001, he was bestowed the chiefly title of Afimutasi in an 
investiture ceremony in American Samoa. He was a 1955 graduate of Farrington High School, who enlisted in the U.S. 
Air Force at age 19 and was assigned intelligence work in Germany and Japan. He became the youngest Bishop in 
Hawaii for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 26 and in 1963 was appointed as the youngest 
member of the original board of directors for the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie. In 1992, he was elected as a 
Faipule (Representative) to American Samoa’s Fono (Territorial Legislature) and in 1997 commenced serving for 4 years 
as the House Liaison for governmental affairs under then Speaker of the House Aina Saolunga Nua. In 2005, he was 
appointed as Special Assistant for governmental and international affairs for then Senate President Lolo Matalasi 
Moliga. While serving in his government capacities, Afimutasi worked tirelessly to organize many disaster relief efforts, 
Samoan Flag Day observances, Special Olympics Summer Games to send a Samoan delegation to Los Angeles, Job 
Corps initiatives to increase the number of youths from the Territory participating in the federal program and several 
projects benefitting the Independent Nation of Samoa, where he enjoyed an excellent rapport and relationship with 
government officials from Upolu and Savai’i through the years. Gus’ career also involved several successful business, 
marketing and public relations endeavors in tourism, entertainment, (including managing his brother Nephi’s 
professional show biz career) sports, media, insurance, automobile and commerce. Despite his extremely active 
professional schedule, his family was what he held as most precious and dear to him. He is survived by his loving wife 
of 53 years Lydia Leimomi, son Tafu Keola 'T.K.', a transportation manager and daughter Teuila Ku’uipo Kaimikaua, a 
hotel manager in Nevada, seven grandchildren, two great- grandchildren and brothers Miller, Nephi and Muliufi 'Mufi' 
Hannemann, and sisters Lady Vaofua Maughan and Gafanua Memea. Sister Faiaso 'Titi' Hannemann passed away in 
2013. Visitation is Sat., Jan.17 @10 a.m. Service begins @ 12 p.m., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 219

APEL, FRANK J., GRIEVE NOT THAT HE IS GONE. RATHER, REJOICE THAT HE WAS HERE. It is with great sadness we 
announce that Frank J. Apel, Jr., 84, has passed away January 8, 2015. Frank Jr., son of Frank Sr. and Kathryn Scanlon, 
was born in Chicago, December 15, 1930. He attended Loyola Academy and University and joined the United States Air 
Force in 1950 where he completed a distinguished career as a command pilot. He earned the rank of full Colonel and 
completed two tours in Vietnam during the 1960's and the 1970's. After achieving numerous military commendations 
and awards, Frank and his late wife of 53 years, the former Madeleine Geiger, retired to the island of Oahu in Hawaii. 
His dedication to public safety continued as he worked for Honolulu's Emergency Management Agencies, where he 
developed and implemented emergency action programs for the citizens of Oahu and the outer islands. In 2011, Frank 
relocated to his hometown of Chicago where he married his current wife, Rosemary Rapp Apel. Frank lived a life of 
faith as part of the Catholic Church and was involved with the denomination in each placed he lived, giving freely of his

survived by his wife, Rosemary, his loving sister, Mary Reyburn, his children, Emily, Frank III, Charlie, Midge, and Katie,

Smiling.' His loss will forever be felt. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National 
Cemetery at a later date. The family requests a donation be made to a charity of their choice in lieu of flowers.
