IVERSON, CYNTHIA LOUISE KEOLANUI,  July 26, 1960 - March 7, 2015. Cynthia was born in Ft. Benning, Georgia to 
Lawrence Keolanui and Christie Ellis Keolanui. As a military dependent, she lived in Georgia, Louisiana, Hawaii, Panama, 
Kansas, and Virginia. She graduated from Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia in 1978. She graduated from the 
University of Hawaii at Manoa with a BA in Communications. She was an intern at KITV- Channel 4 and went on to work 
at KFVE. After that, Cynthia worked at Encyclopedia Britannica, and BFI. In 1996 she started her own marketing 
business, Dream Brokers. For nine years, Cynthia was the manager of Community Outreach at the Hawaii Humane 
Society. In 2006, she started working at Hawaii Civil Defense Emergency Management as a Recovery Branch Chief. For 
many years she was a board member at The River of Life Mission helping the homeless in Hawaii. Cynthia was a 
devoted Christian, and she was an active member of Hope Chapel. That is where she met Bruce Iverson, and they 
married on December 2, 2006. Cynthia was a kind and generous person, with many friends and family who loved her. 
She died of cancer after a long and courageous fight. She is survived by her husband, her parents, sister Laura, brother 
Bob, and seven nieces and nephews. Cynthia's memorial service will be at Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay on April 11 at 10

PUNOHU, WILLIAM KAIPOLEHUA, William Kaipolehua Punohu passed away on March 7 in Anaconda, Montana. He was 
born in Honolulu on February 20, 1949, and lived most of his life on Oahu. He was a 1967 graduate of St. Louis High 
School, then worked for Western and Delta Airlines. He moved to Anaconda in 2007 and was of great help to his 
family. He was unique, very funny, and quite wise about the way the world works. He made many friends at the Happy 
Endings Casino and was given a wonderful party in his memory. Those who left before him were his parents, Kimo and 
Elsie Punohu, and his brothers Robert, Neil, and Alika. He is survived by his wife, Vonnie Punohu, son, Paiea, and 
daughter, Cassandra, and his brother, Raymond (Sue) Punohu. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and a large 
extended family. Willy has touched the lives of people he never knew, through his generous gifts of sight and other

Ida Ho Chow. Graduated St. Louis HS '45. Honorably discharged, U.S. Army 1951. He worked at Pearl Harbor Naval 
Shipyard, for 35 years, beginning his career as a Pipefitter, progressing to Production Controller through a strong work 
ethic and keen intellect. Archie met the 'love of his life,' Jennie Lee at a Chinese Catholic Club picnic, and they were 
married on 9/1/1951, spending 63 years together raising four children. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, 
excelled at cooking and gardening and had the right tool for any project. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Lee Chow; 
son, Leslie Chow (Peggy Moore), El Portal, CA, daughters, Allison 'Didi' Durkin (Jack), Fircrest, WA and Jennifer Chow, 
San Rafael, CA; brother, Fred Lum; grand- children: John (Trang), Colleen (Mike Peterson), Megan, Kevin and Daniel 
Durkin, Ian and Caitlin Chow-Ise; great-grand- son: Jack Durkin; The FamiLee and Ho Clan. He was predeceased by his 
son, Leland Chow. Archie was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony's Church in Kailua for 56 years. The Mass of the 
Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Anthony's Church, 148 Makawao Street, 
Kailua followed by a reception. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony's School in

served as a captain in the United States Army in China. Following his discharge from the military, Dr. Lee attended 
Harvard Medical School. He established his medical practice in Boston, Massachusetts. Beloved by his patients, Dr. Lee 
specialized in surgery and played a unique role in the care of the Chinese community in Boston. He moved to Honolulu 
after retiring. Dr. Lee married his college sweetheart, Mew Sin Hee, of Waimea, Kauai, with whom he raised three 
children. He is survived by his three children, Patricia Lee-Robinson of Honolulu (and her husband James Robinson, son 
Michael and daughter-in-law Melissa), Janice Lee of New York City (and her husband Stuart Shapiro and children Lily 
Bo, Samuel, Kenneth and Mark), and Kenneth Lee of Pittsburgh (and his wife Sharon and children Veronica, Carianne 
and Emma). In addition he is survived by his sister, Martha Lee Tseng, of Palo Alto, California, and by 26 nephews and

ISHIHARA, ROSALINE SHIGEYO (TOKUNAGA), Rosaline was 96 years old when she passed away on April 16, 2015. She 
was a graduate of McKinley High School and Phillips Commercial School. 'Rosie' was a member of the YWCA when she 
met 'Yoshi'. Other affiliations included The Japanese Women's Society, Zonta Club of Honolulu and Credit Women - 
International, where she was a past president. She was married for 59 years to Yoshimasa Ishihara and had five 
children: John (Gail Rabideau), Robert, Isaac (Faith), Joan (Wayne) Nakamoto, and Susan Ishihara. Her husband, and 
only brother Itsuo, predeceased her. Rosie worked long hours at family owned G. Ishihara & Son, Inc., dba Hallmark 
Jewelers, where she 'married' happy couples who trusted her with their important wedding ring choices. They would 
frequently return to see her for other special purchases. Her favorite vacation spot was Las Vegas, playing 'BINGO!' We 
will miss her kind and gently ways, her 'shaka' signs and beautiful smiles!' The family would like to thank Helen 
Agbayani and Islands Hospice for their compassionate care, and to Rev. Yoshinobu Sato who gave her healing 
massages. Rosie is also survived by grandchildren: Kirk (Helen), Kyle (Kathy), Keith (Monique Shimamoto) Nakamoto,

retired from Honolulu Freight Service as General Manager (1985-1995) and Matson Navigation Co. as Sr. Sales 
Representative (1942-1985). His life was full of passion working in the shipping business for many years. Henry's family 
wishes to thank his Caregivers Iva Pouli and Noa Taipaleti for the loving care they gave during the last month of Henry's

AKI, HENRY AH YIN KAU, November 25, 1924 - May 6, 2015, 90, of Lana'i City, passed away at Straub Hospital, 
Honolulu, on May 6, 2015. He was born in Lahaina, Maui at the Haia Kekai family home on Wainee and Dickenson 
Streets. Growing up in Lahaina, Henry attended Kamehameha III and Lahainaluna High Schools. He is a veteran of the 
U.S. Army and served in the World War II South Pacific Campaign. Henry possessed many talents. He loved music and 
played multiple instruments including the sousaphone, ukulele and guitar; slack key was one of his favorites. In his 
youth, he won first place at the State Interlocken Music Contest for Maui Island, and also sang with the Na Leo Lani O 
Maui Choir for several years. In addition to the choir he was an avid gardener, master lei maker, known for his beautiful 
Ilima lei and pheasant feather lei, an avid horseman, master free diver and sportsman of all sorts. Henry was often seen 
in parades with his beautiful Palomino horses and his own handcrafted Hawaiian Saddles. He is also one of the 
founders of the Lana'i Horse Owners Association and served as the President for the Lana'i Hawaiian Civic Club. A Maui 
News front page editorial in July 2006 called Henry Aki, a true 'renaissance man'. Henry worked at Dole Company's 
Lana'i Plantation for 45 years, before retiring in 1986. He began driving mules across the Lana'i pineapple fields and 
also was a diver at Kaumalapau Harbor. He would later become Harbor Master and oversee all shipping operations on 
the island. He lived a full life. He is survived by his best friend and lifetime companion: Lani Scott, daughters Penny 
Wilna Kalua Speer, Renette Haunani Mei Ling Aki-Kamai, Henriette Mei Lani Aki, Joelle Mei Lianne Aki (Alton) Aoki and 
has two hanai daughters: Dawn Amber Edelstein (Chris) Miura, and Sunica Tyler Edelstein, ten grandchildren and a 
great-granddaughter. Services to be held on Friday, June 5, 2015, at Borthwick Mortuary Maunakea Chapel, 1330

CLIFFORD, PAUL J., June 30, 1922 - May 29, 2015, Lt. Col. Paul J. Clifford, US Army (Ret.) passed away on Friday, May 
29, 2015. He was born in Norwich, New York to Paul Hollister and Gladys Mae Brooks Clifford. A proud veteran of the 
US Army who served during WWII in Europe and North Africa, he was awarded the Silver Star for his actions as part of 
an encounter with German tanks in Metz, France in September, 1944. Lt. Col. Clifford also served in the Korean War 
and in Vietnam in an advisory capacity. Lt. Col. Clifford's military career was complex and like many of his generation, 
not something that he discussed casually. Over the years, certain details emerged including a book chronicling tank 
battles in North Africa in which he was mentioned. His stories from France and Japan, when shared, were fascinating. 
His military service took him and his wife, Shirley E. ('Sally') Clifford (nee Riddle), and family to posts in Baltimore, MD; 
Monterey, CA where he attended the Army Language School and became fluent in Japanese; two separate postings in 
Japan in Akita and Nagoya; JUSMAG in Manila, Philippines; San Antonio, TX; Atlanta, GA and finally, Honolulu, HI where 
he retired from active duty. He continued his work for the intelligence community in the US Civil Service but rarely 
divulged any details of his work. Upon retiring from Civil Service, he commenced a third career as an investigator for 
the State of Hawaii for the Welfare Fraud and Child Support Enforcement Departments. He even volunteered with the 
Honolulu Police Department as a Senior Patrol Officer ticketing drivers who violated handicapped parking regulations. 
After working for the State for 13 years, he retired again at age 73 to move to Las Vegas with his second wife, Faith 
Clausen, to be closer to his three and her six adult children. Paul and Faith married in 1984 on the island of Kauai and 
had 13 wonderful years together until her death in 1997. While in Las Vegas, he obtained a private detective's license 
and visited casinos to ensure their machines were properly calibrated. Paul was an accomplished singer and during his 
time in Hawaii, he performed with the Sounds of Aloha Barbershop Chorus and travelled to competitions on the 
mainland. His singing voice was described in a 1935 Norwich, NY newspaper article as 'one of the finest in Norwich and 
vicinity' at age 13! Faith often performed with him as part of the Sweet Adelines group. They also loved to travel, take 
cruises and entertain. They never passed up the chance to dress up and get out on the dance floor. He was also an 
accomplished bowler and weekend golfer and one of the last great whistlers. Lt. Col. Clifford relocated to the Army 
Residence Center in 2002 where he remained active in many local and national intelligence and counter intelligence 
organizations and groups, serving as president and in other capacities. He is survived by his children: J. Stephen Clifford 
and wife, Wanda; Ashley Fenton; Dan Clifford; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Dawson; 
former wife, Patty Morris, and many wonderful friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and 
sister, Dorothy ('Dotty'). Services were held June 4, 2015 at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, Texas. You

SONEDA, CYNTHIA TIMTIM, M.D., 54, passed away in a traffic accident while out on a morning run, June 19th, 2015, 
along Kalanianaole Highway. Cynthia was born in Hilo on September 28th, 1960, to parents Shinji and Masuko Soneda. 
She was valedictorian of Kalani High School in 1978, and then went on to Stanford University, where she graduated at 
the top of her class in chemical engineering. She returned home for her medical degree from the University of Hawaii, 
John A. Burns School of Medicine, where again she stood out as a star student. In medical school she fell in love with 
her anatomy lab partner John Keolalani Timtim, and shortly before graduation, they were married. The young 
physicians embarked on their shared life together by moving to San Bernadino, CA for their residency training. 
Although at one point they had planned careers on the mainland, after the birth of their first child they decided to 
move home instead, where their new family could grow up with island values and enjoy a childhood near all four 
grandparents. Cynthia touched many lives through her work as an ophthalmologist. She worked at the Kaiser clinics in 
Punawai and Waipio for more than 25 years and was fiercely loyal to her patients on the Leeward side, though she 
lived with her family in Kaimuki. She was beloved by her patients and respected by her colleagues for her clinical 
excellence, caring heart, and tireless service. She was also an inspiration to her daughters, both of whom are now 
training to become physicians themselves. Cynthia enjoyed sewing as a hobby from childhood, and this skill served her 
throughout her entire life. She sewed her own wedding dress and later made clothes and Halloween costumes for her 
daughters as they grew up. She believed it was this pastime that prepared her hands for a career of suturing the tiniest 
of eye injuries. Cynthia was an avid runner and ran on the same days, at the same times, every week for years, 
regardless of the weather. It was her time to relax and reflect. She completed several marathons and inspired her 
husband and daughters to live active lives. We are comforted knowing that she died doing what she loved. Cynthia 
gave back to her community and family frequently. Over the years when her elderly father developed Alzheimer's, she 
patiently cared for him until his passing. For the people she couldn't help in her clinical eye practice, she learned Braille 
and transcribed novels on her Braille typewriter for the Library for the Blind and Physically Challenged. Cynthia will be 
remembered for her intelligence, wit and humor, and most of all for the deep love and devotion she showed her 
family, friends, and patients. She is survived by husband Dr. John Timtim, daughters Sara and Elise Timtim, mother 
Masuko Soneda, and siblings Brian Soneda, Alan Soneda, and Janice Saiki. Service will be held at Hosoi Garden 
Mortuary on Friday, July 3rd 2015, at 2:30 PM. Visitation begins at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating
