ACKERMAN, JOAN HAUNANI KESNER, of Honolulu, Hawaii passed quietly away on July 21, 2015 at her current place of 
residence. She was 86 years old. Devoted Mother, Wife of Warren B. Ackerman, she was formerly a Bishop Museum 
Docent, Member of the Daughters of Hawaii, and enjoyed many earlier years as a member of the Junior League of 
Honolulu, Waialae Country Club and Outrigger Canoe Club. She was an avid Tennis player, book reader, cooking 
enthusiast, and Francophile. A graduate of Punahou School - class of 45, she savored her friendships, loved her family 
life and traveling to far off destinations. She attended USC for 2 years prior to marrying in 1950, and belonged to the 
Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at USC. She is daughter of Roy Clark Kesner Sr. and Thelma Kuulei Lewis of Honolulu. 
Grandparents: Blanche Dudoit and Charles Kuhio Lewis; Violet Armstrong and Wilfred Clark Kesner of California. Her 
brother Roy Clark Kesner Jr. and Sister in Law: Juliet Genevieve Beerman Kesner also of Honolulu Hawaii. Joan Haunani 
is survived by her Husband, Warren B. Ackerman, and children: Warren Brad Ackerman, Mary Jill Ackerman, Thomas 
Murrell Ackerman, daughter in law: Lorlee Strom Ackerman, granddaughters: Analee Kanani Ackerman, and Alana 
Grace Ackerman of Bend Oregon, and nephews Bill Kesner and Richard Kesner of Honolulu, HI. A Private Family Service

on July 21, 2015. Born February 16, 1936 to Gilbert Stanley Nobrega and Mary Leialoha Kahoe in Honolulu. She 
graduated from the Sacred Hearts Academy class of 1954. Marrying the love of her life, Heine lkaika Kamai on June 4, 
1955 and together they raised their four D's, David, Dwynn, Dana and Devin. They have one granddaughter, Cheyane 
Haunani, who has always been the pride of their lives and apple of their eyes. Tutu was a Lifelong Member of 'Ahahui 
'O Ka'ahumanu, Hale 'O Na Ali'i and the Waikiki Hawaiian Civic Club; she was also a member of Ewa Pu'uloa Hawaiian 
Civic Club; Nona served on the O'ahu District Council and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs; she was a former 
board member of the CYO, Damien Museum and St. Patrick's Church where she was a member of their Pastoral 
Council, Finance Commtttee, Outreach Volunteer, a Eucharistic Minister as well as a Homebound Eucharistic Minister 
and an integral part of their RCIA Team; she was also a former Girl Scout Leader at St Patrick's School while her 
daughters were young. She worked at Catholic Social Services now called Catholic Charities and retired from Catholic 
Diocese of Hawaii after serving for 25 years. She had a great love for her family which also included a large 'hanai' 
family and was very proud of her children and granddaughter. She is survived by sons, David lkaika and Devin lliki 
Kamai; daughters, Dwynn Leialoha and Dana 'Kaleo' Kamai; grand- daughter, Cheyane Haunani Kamai; sisters, Marilyn 
(George) Cabatic, Gilberta (Larry) Limasa, Myrna (Marshall) Colbert and Cherle (Kimo) Kaholokula; brothers, Herman 
Meyer and Archie Tanabe; hanai 'ohana, Liane Davidson, Paulette Kahana, Kaleo Akim Hanohano, Charmaine Silva, 
Julie-Beth Ako and Father Bob Stark; many nieces and nephews; preceded in death by husband, Heine lkaika Kamai;

Palm Coast, Florida, at the age of 79. Ed was born on a boat off the coast of New York and spent his life as an avid 
yachtsman and long time Hawaii waterman. After 29 years of teaching at Kamehameha Schools, Ed retired and 
devoted himself to charitable works. From 2009-2010 he served as Commodore for the 14th District of the U.S. Coast 
Guard Auxiliary. He was also Potentate of the Aloha Shriner’s in 2005. Ed is survived by his wife of 19 years Yuriko 
Takayama Lott, daughter Rajputi Lashimi Anderson-Lovaglio, and sons Timothy Shrikrishnan Lott and Carlos Borbon De

DYER, CYNTHIA MILLER, died at her home in Napa on September 13, 2015. She is survived by her husband, Norman 
Dyer and six children; Norman Dyer Jr, Concord; Lenora Dyer, Athens, GA; Jeffery Dyer, Mt View; Andrea Dyer Miller, 
Corte Madera; Anthony Dyer, Sacramento; and Kathryn Madruga, Sacramento. There are seventeen grandchildren and 
four great grandchildren scattered among the above. Cynthia was born in December 1934 at UCSF, the second 
daughter of Ralfe and Annette Miller, both California natives. While living in Lafayette, she attended Ellis Elementary 
and Acalanes before graduating from Berkeley High in 1952. As a Freshman at Cal, Cynthia joined the Tri Delta Sorority 
and worked part time at the Administration Building throughout her college years. Cynthia met Norman Dyer soon 
after her first days at Cal. They were married at St John's Presbyterian Church on February 11, 1954 followed by an 
evening reception at the Orinda Country Club. Four days later, the couple was off to Ft Lenard Wood Missouri where Lt 
Dyer would be stationed for the next eighteen months. Returning to the bay area, Cynthia graduated from Cal in 1958 
with a degree in Economics. The Dyer's first house was in Lafayette followed by a Danville home big enough for their 
four children. In 1972, Norm was transferred by Foremost Properties to Hawaii and Kaneohe became home for the 
next thirty two years. To add to Cynthia's children raising efforts, Tony from Vietnam and Katie from Korea were 
adopted in the mid 70s. Cynthia was an active member of the Kailua Racquet Club with both tennis and social activities. 
She and the 'over 50' team members played in a championship tournament in Tucson in 1979. Cynthia's Father had 
started her on the courts when she was nine. With her economics background, Cynthia was in charge of family 
property and financial matters plus hosting many parties for family, friends and neighbors. In 1992, they purchased and 
completely remodeled two apartments in Paris. This became a place where they would live for three months every 
year and provide a 'base' for numerous European, North Africa, and Middle East excursions. A few years after her 
husband retired from Gentry Homes Ltd as CEO, the Dyer's returned to the bay area. They relocated to Tiburon in 2004 
before settling in Napa and as a member of the Silverado Country Club. Private services will be held by the family and

PIEPER, LAMETTE PUANANI passed peacefully from this life the morning of September 13th after a gradual decline in 
health. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life. Lamette 
was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 31, 1947. Lamette, better known as Puanani in her younger years, was the 
eldest of four children of Lamuel and Wilhelmina Kualapai. Lamette along with her siblings excelled at various sports. 
As a teenager she enjoyed surfing with her brothers in Ewa Beach and in fact, placed first in a Haleiwa surf tournament. 
To say that Lamette was one of a kind would be an undeniable understatement to all who interacted with her. The 
continuous generosity, humor, wit, kindness, and wisdom she shared with those around her exist as only a few 
examples of the incredible wife, mother, grandmother, and friend she was. Her absence creates a hole in our lives we 
know will never be filled. Lamette is survived by her husband of forty years Hamilton Pieper: daughter Serina Akimseu 
(Ernie): six grandchildren: Kaili-Ann and Bai ley Akimseu, Lexi-Ann Pieper, Kassidy, Kiara, and Kia'i Pieper. Lamette is 
also survived by her mother Wilhelmina Kualapai: brothers Lamuel 'Buddy' Kualapai Jr. and David 'Chico' Kualapai. She 
was preceded in death by her son Lance Keolu Pieper, step-son Sean Patrick Kaoao Pieper, father Lamuel Kaimi 
Kualapai, and brother Zane 'Rocky' Kualapai. A memorial service wi ll be held on Saturday, October 10th at 10:30am.

2015, surrounded by his family. He was eighty-seven years old. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Bernice 
Emiko (Maruyama) Hamana and four sons and their families: Bruce Seiichi, his wife Yoko, and children Erika and Kevin 
(Kyoto, Japan); Randal Seiji Hamana, his wife Terry, and son Christian James (Honolulu, Hawaii); Carlton Seizo Hamana, 
his wife Severita (Salinas), and son Justin Neel (Orlando, FL); and Kerry Seishi Hamana, his wife Nida Malabanan, and 
children Kasey, Ryan, and Jordan (Oakland). One of eleven children, he leaves behind four sisters. In Hawaii, Yvonne 
Muramoto, Ellie (Thomas) Komori, Shirley Ako and Myrna (Robert) Araki. James Hamana was born in Heeia (the old 
fish camp), Kaneohe, Hawaii, on October 9, 1928 to Hatsuzuchi & Kana Hamana. He graduated from Benjamin Parker 
High School. Jim's ashes will be interned at the Kaneohe Veteran's Cemetery on Tuesday, February 16th at 11:00 a.m. 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society
