At 09:30, Ms. Laura Ruth Norwood, Director of Humanities, shares a story with the moral of “Fly or Die”, emphasizing the major components of career development and the differences between having a career and having a job. This video recording continues with remarks from American Baptist College faculty on Black History Month and African American history, scriptures, and hymns. At 01:57:34, Mr. William Bill Bailey, American Baptist College’s Chairman of the President’s Scholarship Banquet Committee and Co-Chairmen of the Development Committee, speaks on the topic, “Are You Exercising Your Religion?” Bailey shares his idea of two types of Christians: 1) Those who exercise their religion and 2) Those who are passive with their religion. Bailey emphasizes the importance of being consistent and responsible with using religion for leadership and career success. At 02:24:00, Judge A.A. Birch, Associate Professor of Legal Medical at Meharry Medical College, encourages the audience to be still and believe in God no matter what obstacles arise. Starting at 03:13:15, participants recite poems and quotes by James Weldon Johnson, Nikki Giovanni, and other black poets and scholars in honor of Black History Month. This video continues with readings and reenactments of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At 04:39:40, guest speaker Rev. Edwin Clifton Sanders II, Founder and Pastor of Metropolitan Interdenominal Church of Nashville, quotes Daniel Chapter 1 and speaks about Black Americans’ lives in exile and encourages the audience to be proud of their identities and have faith in God despite oppression. This video concludes with recitals of black authors by participants and closing remarks by Ms. Laura Ruth Norwood
