New Articulations of Identity in Contemporary Aesthetics
206 p.In the late twentieth century, political and cultural activism increasingly tackled identity-based forms of structural inequality. During the cultural debates of the 1980s and early ’90s, identity politics became a major arena for critical and intellectual inquiry and was increasingly the focus of creative endeavor. In the decades that followed, new discourses considered the construction and maintenance of rigidly defined identities—pondering whether the markers of belongingness (related to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, and nationhood) have become too fixed and exclusionary. The increasingly prevalent notion that identity discourses (often concerned with histories of coloniality, genocide, racism, nationalism, and gender and sexuality-based antagonisms) have become siloed, tribal, and engaged in so-called ‘purity politics’ has led to divisive but generative conversations. Within this larger conversation, contemporary art and visual culture have emerged as crucial sites for interrogating the ideological construction of identity and difference in representation. This methodologically diverse collection brings together a range of voices that ponder the complexities of belongingness as envisioned in contemporary art and visual culture. This lively interdisciplinary discussion explores how the visual can foster intersectionality as a self-critical praxis while destabilizing fixed notions of identity

Project-Based Learning based on Flipped Classroom to Enhance Self-Regulated Learning and Critical Thinking of Students at NTTU
8 p.This study examined 98 non-English-major students’ perceptions of self-regulated learning and critical thinking in project-based learning based on flipped classrooms in general English classes at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. Data were collected via a 5-point Likert scale survey and semi-structured interviews with 10 randomly selected participants. Results showed highly positive attitudes toward flipped classrooms, with students sharing engagement techniques and raising some concerns. The study proposes solutions to enhance interaction and offers guidance for EFL instructors using project-based learning in flipped classrooms
The Role of Bioactive Compounds in Human Health and Diseases (2nd Edition)
144 p.This reprint presents current research on plant-derived compounds and their effects on human health. It includes clinical, experimental, and in vitro studies that examine how these compounds influence inflammation, metabolism, thermogenesis, and endocrine activity.
The articles explore their role in disease prevention and management, focusing on obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, and chronic inflammation. The reprint also considers their potential in aging and physical performance.
Edited by Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Isaura Alvarez-Leite, this collection supports ongoing research into the health applications of bioactive compounds
Wearable Electronics and Embedded Computing Systems for Biomedical Applications
254 p.The application of wearable electronics in the biomedical research and commercial fields has been gaining great interest over the last several decades. Small-sized, lightweight monitoring systems with low-power consumption and, of course, wearability allow for the collection of physiological and behavioral data in ecological scenarios (e.g., at home, during daily activities or sleep, during specific tasks, etc.) with a minimal discomfort for the end user [1]. As a result, outpatient-monitoring care can be associated with improved quality of life, especially for patients with chronic disease, possibly preventing unnecessary hospitalizations and reducing direct and indirect healthcare costs.
To this extent, research efforts have been focusing on the development of innovative sensors (e.g., smart-textile or contactless electrodes) and sensing platforms, as well as effective algorithms for embedded signal processing and data mining. Furthermore, significant endeavors have been related to small-scale integration of analog/digital sensor signal conditioning and energy harvesting, especially in the case of wireless body area/sensor networks.
The high impact of wearable technology in the frame of multidisciplinary scientific research is also confirmed by the significant number of studies published throughout the last several decades. By searching the keywords “wearable”, “monitoring”, and “human” in the Scopus database, taking into account article title, abstract, and keywords, a total of 2531 entries have been found, starting with less than 10 articles per year before 2001 and reaching more than 200 articles per year since 2011
Advancements in Natural Language Processing, Semantic Networks, and Sentiment Analysis
242 p.This Special Issue examines the intersection of NLP, semantic networks, and sentiment analysis, exploring how these technologies can contribute to more intelligent systems. The contributions gathered address, among other topics, the detection of irony and sarcasm, the generation of semantic explanations, the automatic construction of semantic graphs, the expansion of linguistic resources for underrepresented languages, and the use of large language models. Ultimately, this Special Issue aims not only to reflect the state of the art in the areas above but also to stimulate critical reflection on the methodological challenges, ethical implications, and interdisciplinary opportunities that arise at the intersection of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence
