Prince Bills


PRINCE BILL 
"The People's King" 
William Charles Lunalilo was born on January 31, 1835 
and given the Christian name William in honor of British 
King William IV, who had befriended many members of 
Hawaiian royalty. As he was about to be given his 
Hawaiian name, his mother called out "I luna, 
i luna, i lunaliloloa,' ' meaning ''the highest, 
the highest, the highest of all.'' Although 
he reigned as King Lunalilo, he was 
always known affectionately by the 
Hawaiian people as Prince Bill. 
Because his predecessor, Kamehameha V, had neglected to 
name a successor, and even though Prince Bill could claim 
the throne as the highest ranking contender of royal 
blood, an election was held, in keeping with the 
Constitution of 1864. In an overwhelming show 
of support, Prince Bill was elected as the 
People's King and reigned from 1873 
to 187 4 as the sixth sovereign 
ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom. 
Prince Bill was known to favor high living and had 
a predilection to alcohol. This, in addition to pulmonary 
tuberculosis, caused his untimely death at age 39, 
after a reign of only 390 days. 
In keeping with his love for the people, 
Prince Bill mandated in his will that his estate be sold 
with a provision made for the establishment of a home for 
''poor, destitute and infirm people of Hawaiian blood 
or extraction, giving preference to old people.'' 
The Lunalilo Home in Hawaii Kai on Oahu 
stands today as his lasting monument. 
Dedicated to the memory of this popular ruler, our 
restaurant is named in honor of Prince Bill, 
who enjoyed fine food and drink and 
was so loved by his loyal subjects.

THE LEGEND OF THE YUM YUM TREE 
The legend of the Yum Yum Tree is as old as the Islands. 
As the story goes, there was once a magical tree that bore fruits and berries 
of every size and description. The tree yielded its tempting natural 
treasures in such abundance that it could provide food of remarkable 
goodness to all who knew the secret of its existence. 
Then one day, a visitor to the Islands made a gift of a big 9" tin pan 
to one who knew of the magical tree. Inspired to great culinary 
achievement by the tree's sensational fruits, the tin's new owner 
created the world's very first pie. Overflowing with marvelous ingredients, 
and cooked with great care, the pie elicited an echoed response from 
all who sampled it. .. "YUM! ... YUM! ... YUM! Well, the rest is history 
and the Yum Yum Tree (as it came to be known) has since been 
synonymous with the finest in carefully prepared food in great abundance. 
At the Yum Yum Tree Restaurant we still make big 9" pies that are just 
as legendary as that very first one, and our home-style cooking just couldn't 
be more inspired. In fact, some people think we know the location 
of that magical tree to this very day. It could be the key to our delicious 
food and "Yummy" pies .. . but then who believes in legends?
