    Comparison of Paid Subscription vs Freeware Software on Antivirus Program

    A student presentation to the Fall 2021 Student Research and Creative Works SymposiumIn the realm of computer security there are various tools, programs, and software to prevent harmful attacks on the user computer. Antivirus software applications represent a common method to protect computer systems. With new types of malware being created by malicious users throughout each year user will need some type of formal protection on their PC. Upon looking at various antivirus software some are accessible for free for example Windows Defender for simple protection. Other software can be downloaded for free like Malwarebytes or trial-based software to determine if the user wants to purchase the subscription software. Upon looking at these options it would be informative to determine the most effective and efficient antivirus software for protecting a PC by either detecting or eliminating harmful virus programs. The overall approach to address this project involved the evaluation of several antivirus software applications which included Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, subscription-based McAfee, and trial based anti-virus software. A sample malware program installed on a computer system will be utilized to determine if the selected anti-virus and malware applications are able to detect or eliminate the sample malware file. Overall, aim of this project is to evaluate how well the security program helps protect the PC but also examines its efficiency, usability, and if required for personal use or for business use. When most people are looking into PC protection some people wonder if the purchase of a antivirus software is necessary in protecting their PC data and wonder if the free software is enough for protection

    A megastudy of text-based nudges encouraging patients to get vaccinated at an upcoming doctor’s appointment

    Many Americans fail to get life-saving vaccines each year, and the availability of a vaccine for COVID-19 makes the challenge of encouraging vaccination more urgent than ever. We present a large field experiment (N = 47,306) testing 19 nudges delivered to patients via text message and designed to boost adoption of the influenza vaccine. Our findings suggest that text messages sent prior to a primary care visit can boost vaccination rates by an average of 5%. Overall, interventions performed better when they were 1) framed as reminders to get flu shots that were already reserved for the patient and 2) congruent with the sort of communications patients expected to receive from their healthcare provider (i.e., not surprising, casual, or interactive). The best-performing intervention in our study reminded patients twice to get their flu shot at their upcoming doctor’s appointment and indicated it was reserved for them. This successful script could be used as a template for campaigns to encourage the adoption of life-saving vaccines, including against COVID-19

Last year, a data breach investigations report by Verizon claimed that over 0% of the total number of breaches leveraged stolen or weak passwords. As a result, companies have been investing on a multitude of ways to strengthen password security and improve the authentication process for both clients/ users and employees. One of these ways is biometric authentication. Currently, most of the general population’s experience with biometric authentication is done through mobile devices such as Apple’s FaceID and TouchID and Android fingerprint readers. They are often marketed as convenient and secure alternatives to common 4- or 6-digit user passcodes

Most of the people compete/finish the game by their ability and experience, others using game hacks and cheat software to gain advantages to destroy the fairness of the environment, which also involve criminal activity where in-game items are traded with money in real life. To find a solution for this problem, this research paper provides an overview of different cheat methods, examples of prominent gaming hacks, comparison of anticheat methods and future anti-cheat system and security suggestions. This research paper aims to build a framework for a brief conception in cheating system investigate methods of cheating detection and the limitation of various game architectures

    This record is a placeholder for the introduction to Dr. David Odhiambo's published book The Minoritarian and Black Reason: A Philosophico-Literary Investigation. Publisher restrictions prevent repository access for two years after publication. Public availability for the introductory chapter is scheduled for May 14, 2023.The Minoritarian and Black Reason: A Philosophico-Literary Investigation addresses the question, how can we understand and relate responsibly to others who differ from us in our everyday concerns? The work looks at theories about difference in a variety of philosophical texts and novels from the early modern and modern periods to examine their various approaches to the problem of representational language. The author discusses how these distinct methods of thought present the Black-figure, and critiques how imagined blackness or Black reason willfully looks away from the African presence. Central to this inquiry are key concepts from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in a description of the minoritarian as a non-representational method that discloses affective intensity in naked life (zoe), beings of the sensible (sentiendum), and personae. So, it is presented as a third term in an ungrounded field of experience composed of assemblages or social networks. Hence, the book deconstructs a unified structuralist ontology to propose a line of flight from a model of logic used to objectify and reproduce identities of people from a varied sphere of political rights (bios)

    "I Wonder Which of You is Real": The Indigenous Confidence Man in John Kneubuhl's "The Night of the Two-Legged Buffalo"

    In response to Judith Yaross Lee’s introduction of a framework designed to probe the relationship between empire and American humor, this article analyzes John Kneubuhl’s “The Night of the Two-Legged Buffalo,” a 1966 episode of The Wild Wild West (1965-69). Kneubuhl (1920-92) was a Samoan American playwright who wrote for theater, television, and film. Like Mark Twain, he demonstrated a lifelong interest in the trope of the confidence man. In “The Night of the Two-Legged Buffalo” he depicts protagonists and antagonists alike in the US borderlands as con artists contending for power. While agents Jim West and Artemus Gordon emerge as cultural impersonators who serve the ideology of Manifest Destiny, the Prince of the South Sea Coral Islands, a Polynesian aristocrat, deploys American hegemony in Oceania. Kneubuhl draws on conventions of the fale aitu, a Samoan theatrical genre, as well as his association with Sam Amalu, a Native Hawaiian humorist and con man known for his elaborate pranks and swindles. As a site of contest between what Lee terms “neocolonial hybridity” and “postcolonial discontinuity,” “The Night of the Two-Legged Buffalo” exemplifies Kneubuhl’s unique trickster aesthetics
