Total proteins, fibrinogen and the protein/fibrinogen ratio are biochemical parameters used in small animal veterinary medicine, providing information about the health status of our animals. The objective of this study was to determine the reference intervals of these analytes in healthy adult dogs, as well as to evaluate their impact against physiological, genetic and environmental variables. A total of 145 dogs were analyzed in the study, grouped according to size (small, medium, large and giant), type of diet (standard, premium, super-premium, homemade and mixed), sex and reproductive status. The results showed that total proteins followed a normal distribution, while fibrinogen values and the protein/fibrinogen ratio did not. No significant differences were found in the analytes in relation to sex, reproductive status, size or diet. The established reference intervals were total proteins (48-80 g/l), fibrinogen (1-6 g/l) and protein/fibrinogen ratio (5-28 g/l), these intervals being wider than those currently used in the Los Lagos region. Although no differences were found in the proposed variables, an n composed of a greater population mass should be used for future research

In health care, self-stigma is a type of stigma characterized by patients’ internalization of negative perceptions of their condition, affecting their well-being and restricting their search for care. Dementia is a stigmatized condition. Self-stigma in dementia has received limited attention and the available self-stigma assessment scales don’t consider the patient’s condition. OBJECTIVE. To develop a questionnaire for the assessment of self-stigma in people with the diagnosis of early-stage dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. METHODS. Mixed development study with two phases. To describe manifestations of self-stigma, a qualitative study was first conducted through interviews with eleven individuals who received the diagnosis of early-stage dementia of the Alzheimer type. Using this information, along with conceptual abstraction and operationalization, theoretical dimensions and items were later developed. Apparent and content validity of dimensions and items were examined through consultation with experts (n:3) and people with early-stage dementia (n:3). Suggestions on acceptability and utility were also collected. RESULTS. A first version of the questionnaire was developed to evaluate cognitive and behavioral-affective manifestations of self-stigma in dementia. It was composed of four dimensions and 22 items measured through a four-level Likert scale. CONCLUSION. The questionnaire and suggestions for use are presented. Further studies should examine construct validity through psychometric evaluation. A questionnaire to evaluate self-stigma contributes to identifying the needs of people with dementia and the development of comprehensive care plans

Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors.Drug resistance in infectious diseases developed by bacteria and fungi is an important issue since it is necessary to further develop novel compounds with biological activity that counteract this problem. In addition, new pharmaceutical compounds with lower secondary effects to treat cancer are needed. Coordination compounds appear to be accessible and promising alternatives aiming to overcome these problems. In this review, we summarize the recent literature on coordination compounds based on nitrobenzoic acid (NBA) as a ligand, its derivatives, and other nitro-containing ligands, which are widely employed owing to their versatility. Additionally, an analysis of crystallographic data is presented, unraveling the coordination preferences and the most effective crystallization methods to grow crystals of good quality. This underscores the significance of elucidating crystalline structures and utilizing computational calculations to deepen the comprehension of the electronic properties of coordination complexes

All rights reserved.Organizational climate and collaborative work management are essential to the success of educational organizations. The study examined the relationship between these constructs in students and teachers. The research involved 358 students and 59 teachers and employed multiple linear regression to create predictive models. The results confirmed a positive and significant correlation between organizational climate and collaborative work management in both groups. However, the linear regression analysis highlighted that students showed greater motivation towards managing the climate and the educational process compared to teachers, although teachers demonstrated organizational commitment. This study underscores the importance of organizational climate in education and reveals notable differences between students and teachers, suggesting the need for differentiated collaborative work management strategies for these two groups, including the use of virtual collaborative spaces

The psychometric properties of this test among the population in Chile are unknown. This study was aimed to determine the factor structure of the PHQ-4 in the adult population in Chile, and to assess its measurement invariance across different groups. Methods The study considered a nationally representative sample of 10921 people aged 18 and above, in Chile in 2021. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted, and configural, metric, scalar, and strict measurement invariance were assessed. Results The two-factor structure of the PHQ-4 supported the two underlying constructs of depression and anxiety. This model explained 67% of the variance and had excellent fit (CFI: 0.9999; TLI: 0.9994; RMSEA: 0.0107; SRMR: 0.0022). Strict measurement invariance held across gender, age, area of residence, household income quintile, immigrant or host population, and indigenous or non-indigenous population (ΔCFI<0.01). Conclusion The PHQ-4 can be used to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms in population studies, and as a screening test for depression and anxiety in public mental health programs in Chile

Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2024.Background There is a large literature on the significant impact of rearing factors in the psychological development of different child’s learning patterns and wellbeing in elementary and secondary schools, but there is a scarcity of studies on to what extent those influences remain stable up to higher education. Objective In this study, parenting practices and family status were analyzed as predictors of the different learning styles, psychological difficulties, mental health factors, and academic performance, comprising the psychosocial diversity in learning (DinL) at the university classroom. Methods Using a cross-sectional design, a questionnaire was administered to a sample of 2522 students at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). It included a DinL scale measuring five psychological learning dimensions (coping with difficulties, effort, autonomy, Social/Physical Context, and understanding/career interest), plus several items on retrospective parenting practices, family, and sociodemographic variables. Multiple regressions and analyses of variance were conducted with the family factors as independent variables and the learning factors as dependent variables. Results Results showed parenting variables, parents’ education, and family economy as having a significant impact on psychological learning dimensions, academic performance, and especially on the students’ wellbeing and mental health status, being an important contributors to explain the DinL in the university classroom. Conclusion The results bring interesting conclusions for developmental and health psychologists when working with parents aimed at fostering wellbeing and learning strategies related to academic inclusion and achievement

Understanding relationships between epigenetic marks and their application to robust assignment of chromatin states

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2024. Published by Oxford University Press.Structural changes of chromatin modulate access to DNA for the molecular machinery involved in the control of transcription. These changes are linked to variations in epigenetic marks that allow to classify chromatin in different functional states depending on the pattern of these histone marks. Importantly, alterations in chromatin states are known to be linked with various diseases, and their changes are known to explain processes such as cellular proliferation. For most of the available samples, there are not enough epigenomic data available to accurately determine chromatin states for the cells affected in each of them. This is mainly due to high costs of performing this type of experiments but also because of lack of a sufficient amount of sample or its degradation. In this work, we describe a cascade method based on a random forest algorithm to infer epigenetic marks, and by doing so, to identify relationships between different histone marks. Importantly, our approach also reduces the number of experimentally determined marks required to assign chromatin states. Moreover, in this work we have identified several relationships between patterns of different histone marks, which strengthens the evidence in favor of a redundant epigenetic code
