The effect of intratympanic gentamicin as a prehabilitation strategy for objective and subjective vestibular function in patients undergoing microsurgery for a unilateral vestibular schwannoma
Publisher Copyright: © 2023, The Author(s).Objective: To review the literature on intratympanic gentamicin treatment as prehabilitation for patients undergoing surgery for a unilateral vestibular schwannoma. Data sources: A systematic literature search was conducted up to March 2023 in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar and Emcare databases. Review methods: Articles on the effect of intratympanic gentamicin followed by vestibular schwannoma surgery were reviewed. Data on objective vestibular function and subjective outcomes were compiled in tables for analysis. Relevance and methodological quality were assessed with the methodological index for non-randomized tool. Results: A total of 281 articles were identified. After screening and exclusion of duplicates, 13 studies were reviewed for eligibility, of which 4 studies could be included in the review. The posturography test, the subjective visual horizontal test, and the optokinetic nystagmus test showed decreased vestibular function in the group of patients who received intratympanic gentamicin before microsurgery compared to the group of patients without gentamicin. Other objective tests did not show significant differences between patient groups. Subjective vestibular outcomes, as evaluated by questionnaires on quality of life and/or dizziness, did not seem to improve from intratympanic gentamicin pretreatment. Conclusion: Vestibular schwannoma patients who received intratympanic gentamicin before surgical resection of the tumor performed better in the posturography test, subjective visual horizontal test, and the optokinetic nystagmus test afterwards. However, studies that also evaluated subjective outcomes such as dizziness, anxiety, depression, and balance self-confidence did not show a positive effect of intratympanic gentamicin on the vestibular complaints and symptoms
Perception of equality and discrimination in Physical Education in Secondary School students
Publisher Copyright: © Copyright 2024: Publication Service of the University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain.
School principals as translators of inclusion policiesConditioned commitment, rewarding inclusion, and privatizing translation
Publisher Copyright: © 2024, Arizona State University. All rights reserved. The objective of this research was to explore the translations produced by school principals regarding school inclusion policies in the Chilean educational system. In theoretical terms, the notion of translation from the policy enactment approach or the implementation of policies was used to understand the translations produced by the participants regarding these policies. Methodologically, a qualitative study was carried out consisting of the application of semi-structured interviews to 40 directors and directors of public and subsidized schools from different regions of Chile. Among the main findings, first, a conditioned commitment of the participants toward compliance with the policies, expressing adherence and resistance, stands out. Secondly, it was evidenced that the principals maintained that inclusion would be a priority in schools if it were rewarded for its compliance. Lastly, it was identified that some of the participants transfer the responsibility for the translation of the policies to actors external to the educational institution, such as the Educational Technical Consultancies, which privatizes the task of interpreting and generating meanings and practices around these policies
Revisiting signatures of thermal axions in nonstandard cosmologies

Funded by SCOAPWe revisit the formation of a thermal population of hadronic axions in nonstandard cosmologies, in light of the recent developments in obtaining continuous and smooth interaction rates for both the gluon and photon couplings. For certain cosmological histories, such as low-temperature reheating (LTR) and kinationlike scenarios, the thermalization of the axion can be severely delayed to higher masses. In the case that thermal equilibrium is achieved, we improve the constraints on LTR for axion masses around the eV scale with respect to previous works and we constrain for the first time early matter-dominated cosmologies. We also point out the possibility of having the coexistence of cold and warm dark matter populations of axions in kinationlike scenarios in the eV mass range
Acidithiobacillia class members originating at sites within the Pacific Ring of Fire and other tectonically active locations and description of the novel genus ‘Igneacidithiobacillus’

One such lineage is ‘Igneacidithiobacillus’, a novel genus-level taxon, represented by ‘Igneacidithiobacillus copahuensis’ VAN18-1T as its type species, along with two other uncultivated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) originating from geothermally active sites across the Pacific Ring of Fire. In this study, we investigate the genetic and genomic diversity, and the distribution patterns of several uncharacterized Acidithiobacillia class strains and sequence clones, which are ascribed to the same 16S rRNA gene sequence clade. By digging deeper into this data and contributing to novel MAGs emerging from environmental studies in tectonically active locations, the description of this novel genus has been consolidated. Using state-of-the-art genomic taxonomy methods, we added to already recognized taxa, an additional four novel Candidate (Ca.) species, including ‘Ca. Igneacidithiobacillus chanchocoensis’ (mCHCt20-1TS), ‘Igneacidithiobacillus siniensis’ (S30A2T), ‘Ca. Igneacidithiobacillus taupoensis’ (TVZ-G3 TS), and ‘Ca. Igneacidithiobacillus waiarikiensis’ (TVZ-G4 TS). Analysis of published data on the isolation, enrichment, cultivation, and preliminary microbiological characterization of several of these unassigned or misassigned strains, along with the type species of the genus, plus the recoverable environmental data from metagenomic studies, allowed us to identify habitat preferences of these taxa. Commonalities and lineage-specific adaptations of the seven species of the genus were derived from pangenome analysis and comparative genomic metabolic reconstruction. The findings emerging from this study lay the groundwork for further research on the ecology, evolution, and biotechnological potential of the novel genus ‘Igneacidithiobacillus’
Analyses and Insights into Genetic Reassortment and Natural Selection as Key Drivers of Piscine orthoreovirus Evolution
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors.Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) is a pathogen that causes heart and skeletal muscle inflammation in Salmo salar and has also been linked to circulatory disorders in other farmed salmonids, such as Oncorhynchus kisutch and Oncorhynchus mykiss. The virus has a segmented, double-stranded RNA genome, which makes it possible to undergo genetic reassortment and increase its genomic diversity through point mutations. In this study, genetic reassortment in PRV was assessed using the full genome sequences available in public databases. This study used full genome sequences that were concatenated and genome-wide reassortment events, and phylogenetic analyses were performed using the recombination/reassortment detection program version 5 (RDP5 V 5.5) software. Additionally, each segment was aligned codon by codon, and overall mean distance and selection was tested using the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis X software, version 10.2 (MEGA X version 10.2). The results showed that there were 17 significant reassortment events in 12 reassortant sequences, involving genome exchange between low and highly virulent genotypes. PRV sequences from different salmonid host species did not appear to limit the reassortment. This study found that PRV frequently undergoes reassortment events to increase the diversity of its segmented genome, leading to antigenic variation and increased virulence. This study also noted that to date, no reassortment events have been described between PRV-1 and PRV-3 genotypes. However, the number of complete genomic sequences within each genotype is uneven. This is important because PRV-3 induces cross-protection against PRV-1, making it a potential vaccine candidate
Am I certain that others have done wrong? : Kant on judging misdeeds (of others)
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.This paper provides a detailed analysis of how, according to Kant, the moral badness of some third parties’ actions can be established with certainty (by anyone, not only by the agent’s own conscience or by God). This account helps clarify why Kant affirms that some forms of wrongdoing (of which there are a “multitude of woeful examples”) can be demonstrated to be immoral, while excluding the possibility of proving the moral goodness of any action. The paper concludes by arguing that the possible certainty of judgements imputing immorality to actions of others is not rational but rather moral
Fibra extraída de corteza de Eucalyptus globulus como sustrato potencial para la germinación de Pinus radiata y Quillaja saponaria
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors. This study aimed to explore alternative substrates for growing forest species using eucalyptus bark. It evaluated the potential of extracted Eucalyptus globulus fiber bark as a substitute for commercial growing media such as coconut fiber, moss, peat, and compost pine. We determined the physicochemical parameters of the growing media, the germination rate, and the mean fresh and dry weights of seedlings. We used the Munoo-Liisa Vitality Index (MLVI) test to evaluate the phytotoxicity of the bark alone and when mixed with commercial substrates. Generally, the best mixture for seed growth was 75% extracted eucalyptus bark fiber and 25% commercial substrates. In particular, the 75E-25P (peat) mixture is a promising substitute for seedling growth of Pinus radiata, achieving up to 3-times higher MLVI than the control peat alone. For Quillaja saponaria, the best growth substrate was the 50E-50C (coconut fiber) mixture, which had the most significant MLVI values (127%). We added chitosan and alginate-encapsulated fulvic acid phytostimulants to improve the performance of the substrate mixtures. The fulvic acid, encapsulated or not, significantly improved MLVI values in Q. saponaria species and P. radiata in concentrations between 0.05 and 0.1% w/v. This study suggests that mixtures with higher levels of extracted fiber are suitable for growing forest species, thus promoting the application of circular economy principles in forestry
