Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors. The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and its sublineages continue to cause COVID-19-associated pediatric hospitalizations, severe disease, and death globally. BNT162b2 and CoronaVac are the main vaccines used in Chile. Much less is known about the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain-based vaccines in the pediatric population compared to adults. Given the worldwide need for booster vaccinations to stimulate the immune response against new Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2, we characterized the humoral and cellular immune response against Omicron variant BA.1 in a pediatric cohort aged 10 to 16 years who received heterologous vaccination based on two doses of CoronaVac, two doses of CoronaVac (2x) plus one booster dose of BNT162b2 [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (1x)], two doses of CoronaVac plus two booster doses of BNT162b2 [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (2x)], and three doses of BNT162b2. We observed that the [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (2x)] vaccination showed higher anti-S1 and neutralizing antibody titers and CD4 and CD8 T cell immunity specific to the Omicron variant compared to immunization with two doses of CoronaVac alone. Furthermore, from all groups tested, immunity against Omicron was highest in individuals who received three doses of BNT162b2. We conclude that booster vaccination with BNT162b2, compared to two doses of CoronaVac alone, induces a greater protective immunity

Publisher Copyright: © 2024. María Cano University Foundation. In recent years, there have been international references to the vocal approach for the specific group of transgender individuals, although the Latin American literature is still very timid on this matter. The purpose of this article is to identify the current norms, statistics, and vocal approach towards transgender individuals in Chile and Argentina, considering the experience of two speech and language pathologists with more than twenty years of experience on voice therapy. Reflections were made on the transgender reality in these countries, the limitations in the implementation of the depathologization of the transgender group were outlined, some current and unreliable statistics were presented, some innovative actions in the public system were highlighted, and the lack of knowledge about the benefits of vocal work for transgender men and women was discussed. The identified aspects could benefit from multicenter research that strengthens speech therapy actions with this group, contributing to de-pathologization and positive approach

Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors.Biocorrosion of materials used in dental restorations is a complex process involving various bacterial species that coexist as biofilms. Since copper possesses excellent antibacterial properties, it could help minimize this problem. The aim of this study is to assess the antibiofilm characteristics and corrosion resistance of CoCr and copper-coated CoCr alloys in a multispecies biofilm model. CoCr alloys and CoCr coated with copper (CoCr/Cu) using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) were investigated. The samples were incubated in media with and without a multispecies biofilm for 24 h and for 15 days. Potentiodynamic Polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used to assess the corrosion behavior of the samples. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was utilized to observe the growth of multispecies biofilms and the type of corrosion. The Mann–Whitney U test was employed to examine corrosion results, with significant differences defined as p < 0.05. CoCr/Cu alloys demonstrated superior corrosion resistance at 24 h and 15 days in the presence of biofilm compared to those without coating. No differences were observed in multispecies biofilm formation at 24 h. The study demonstrates that copper-coated CoCr alloys (CoCr/Cu) exhibit a more positive corrosion potential (Ecorr) compared to uncoated CoCr alloys, both in the presence and absence of multispecies biofilm (BP) at 24 h and 15 days. After 15 days, the potential of CoCr/Cu with BP was −0.144 V, compared to −0.252 V for uncoated CoCr. These significant differences in Ecorr values underscore the protective effect of copper against corrosion in multispecies biofilm environments

The purpose of this research work is to present the barriers to learning and participation in the reading process in a post-confinement context in the 1st basic cycle. This study will make it possible to analyze, identify, characterize and describe the barriers to learning and participation of those in the aforementioned cycle in a particular subsidized educational context, proposing guidelines that allow minimizing and eliminating the barriers related to the reading process based on strategies of diversification and curricular accessibility, transitioning to an inclusive culture with universal access to the teaching-learning process. This problem arises from the direct observation of the internship processes of the teachers in training and of the teachers who worked in the first cycle, who upon returning to face-to-face learning noticed the presence of barriers to learning and participation in their students. From this, the problem gave rise to the work, it arises to consider reading as essential tools for the learning of the other sciences. Consequently, the child who does not read will have barriers to access written language and at the same time as an integral process, these being one of the bases of social interaction and growth. Through the acquisition of the reading process, the child will be guided to critical, reflective thinking, allowing them to compare, relate information, and look for sources of information. Various national and international studies and analyses indicate that there are significant gaps and barriers in the post-confinement reading process

Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors. Background: Various tools have been proposed for predicting mortality among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 to improve clinical decision-making, the predictive capacities of which vary in different populations. The objective of this study was to develop a model for predicting mortality among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 during their time in a clinical centre. Methods: This was a retrospective study that included 201 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Mortality was evaluated with the Kaplan–Meier curve and Cox proportional hazards models. Six models were generated for predicting mortality from laboratory markers and patients’ epidemiological data during their stay in a clinical centre. Results: The model that presented the best predictive power used D-dimer adjusted for C-reactive protein (CRP) and oxygen saturation. The sensitivity (Sn) and specificity (Sp) at 15 days were 75% and 71.9%, respectively. At 30 days, Sn was 75% and Sp was 75.4%. Conclusions: These results allowed us to establish a model for predicting mortality among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 based on D-dimer laboratory biomarkers adjusted for CRP and oxygen saturation. This mortality predictor will allow patients to be identified who require more continuous monitoring and health care

All Rights Reserved. The main objective of this research study is to determine the relationship between entropy and behaviors that optimize learning decision-making among student teams during an experimental physics science class. An initial condition (IC) is applied by using a very short video with apparently unrelated content, emerging as a discovery the question that must be answered by each team and its experiment. The behaviors displayed are transformed into time series that are analyzed with a chaos theory software. The results show that the emotions time series, in chaotic dynamics, show that entropy has the highest thermal correspondence, positively influencing team collaborative learning while favoring each student’s training. It is concluded that using ICs within a context, at the beginning of a class, is suitable for inducing a positive emotional disposition among student teams that are committed to an experimental physics course

Algoritmos mejorados de selección de red para entornos IoT domésticos con sistemas híbridos VLC/RF

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: AuthorsThe impending scarcity of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum has led to a boom in the development of complementary technologies such as visible light communication (VLC). Hybrid systems that complement both technologies have demonstrated numerous advantages in terms of data rate, bandwidth, and security. However, the successful operation of a hybrid VLC/RF network is highly dependent on the network selection process. In this paper, three network selection algorithms are proposed for hybrid VLC/RF systems in an indoor Internet of things (IoT)-home scenario. The proposed algorithms consider the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the available capacity of each network, the number of devices connected to each network, and the users’ location within the scenario. Each algorithm analyzes the data load requirements of each mobile terminal and IoT device according to these metrics. Based on this evaluation, the network that offers the best benefit in terms of signal quality, capacity, and throughput is selected. The numerical results show that the VLC network presents higher SNR values, especially for users near its access points. In addition, a higher bandwidth, a higher connection capacity, and an improvement in the quality of service are perceived from these positions. The three proposed selection algorithms presented good overall performance of the hybrid system, with the Analytical Algorithm offering the best performance for connected users, superior to the Sequential Algorithm by an average of 15.9%. The network selection algorithms efficiently allocated the maximum number of users for the VLC network, improving overall system performance and reducing the RF network data load. The impending scarcity of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum has led to a boom in the development of complementary technologies such as visible light communication (VLC).
