The topic is relevant due to the increasing number of intercultural contacts in the modern world and the need to prepare professionals with skills for effective interaction in multicultural and multiethnic environments. The article explores different facets of intercultural competence, such as familiarity with cultural nuances, adaptability to diverse cultural contexts, appreciation for diversity, and more. The paper places particular emphasis on the influence of values on students' intercultural competence. Five main approaches are presented, namely: the approach of awareness and recognition of differences, the approach of cultural relations, the approach of cultural understanding and adaptation, the approach of cultural perception, and the approach of cultural interaction and collaboration. Based on the proposed approaches, methods for their implementation are provided for acquiring intercultural competence in the conditions of higher education institutions. The authors report the findings of an empirical study on the implementation of value-oriented teaching and educational methods in higher education. The study included an experiment that tested the effectiveness of value-based approaches in developing intercultural competence during professional training. Four levels of intercultural competence acquisition were identified. Based on these levels, a comparison was conducted to determine the effectiveness of value-based approaches in acquiring intercultural competence during professional training at higher education institutions. According to Pearson's criterion calculation, the use of value-based approaches in developing students' intercultural competence during professional training at higher education institutions shows promise

In: Equilibrium : quarterly journal of economics and economic policy. Olsztyn : Institute of Economic Research, 2024. ISSN 1689-765X. Vol. 19, no. 3 (2024), pp. 1035-1074.Research background: Many studies point to the fact that the use of controlling in family businesses differs from that in non-family businesses and depends on factors that cannot be observed in non-family businesses. The research into the application of controlling tools in family and non-family businesses operating in the woodworking and furniture industry in Slovakia as a unique interconnection of the issues of family businesses, controlling and the Slovak woodworking and furniture industry has not been so far carried out. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to identify significant differences in the application of tools of individual controlling subsystems between family and non-family businesses operating in the woodworking and furniture industry in Slovakia on the basis of a comprehensive mapping of the utilization of controlling tools in the businesses in question. Methods: The mapping of the issue was carried out by questionnaire-based method. In total, seven hypotheses were formulated. The validity of the assumed hypotheses was verified by two sample z-test. To generalize the obtained results to the entire basic set, verification of the minimum sample size was carried out. The representativeness of the sample was verified by the Pearson's Chi-square test of goodness-of-fit. Findings & value added: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that there are indeed significant differences in the use of controlling tools between family and non-family businesses operating in the industries in question. The results have showed the existence of significant differences in the use of tools of all examined controlling subsystems. It can be concluded that the application of controlling tools in the family businesses is significantly different from that in the non-family businesses. It can also be observed that family businesses of the industries in question tend to use controlling in an insufficient way and in general to a lesser extent compared to non-family businesses. The main benefit of the paper is the identification of the use of controlling tools in Slovak family businesses operating in the woodworking and furniture industry compared to non-family businesses. This knowledge can be valuable for practitioners and researchers in the field. The contribution also refers to the future direction of the development of the Slovak woodworking and furniture family businesses.VEGA 1/0011/24 Stratégia rozvoja a udržateľnosti rodinného podnikania v drevárskom a nábytkárskom priemysle v Slovenskej republike APVV-18-0520 Inovatívne metódy analýzy výkonnosti lesnícko drevárskeho komplexu s využitím princípov zeleného rastu APVV-20-0004 Vplyv rastu antropometrických parametrov slovenskej populácie na funkčné vlastnosti nábytku a podnikové procesy APVV-21-0051 Výskum nepravého jadra a bele dreva dreviny Buk lesný (Fagus sylvatica L.) za účelom eliminácie farebných rozdielov procesom termickej úpravy sýtou vodnou parou APVV-22-0238 Výskum a príprava drevných bio-kompozitov s nízkou emisiou formaldehydu s aplikáciou aminoplastov modifikovaných prírodnými polymérnymi aditívami a aktivátormi polykondenzácie APVV-23-0116 Príležitosti a riziká konceptu zelenej ekonomiky v slovenskom lesníctve COST CA23117 Connecting critical pedagogies, inclusive art forms and alternative barometers for urban sustainability COST CA23157 European network for multiple view life cycle sustainability assessment NextGenerationEU 09I03-03-V05-00016 Early stage granty - Technická univerzita vo Zvolene IPA ESG 3/2024 Výskum udržateľnosti rodinného podnikania v drevárskom a nábytkárskom priemysle na Slovensku IPA ESG 4/2024 Budovanie agility v podnikoch drevospracujúceho priemysl

Molecular and morphological characterisation of larvae of the genus Diamesa Meigen, 1835 (Diptera: Chironomidae) in Alpine streams (Ötztal Alps, Austria)

In: PLoS One. San Francisco : Public Library of Science, 2024. ISSN 1932-6203. Vol. 19, no. 2 (2024), pp. 1-15.Diamesa species (Diptera, Chironomidae) are widely distributed in freshwater ecosystems, and their life cycles are closely linked to environmental variables such as temperature, water quality, and sediment composition. Their sensitivity to environmental changes, particularly in response to pollution and habitat alterations, makes them valuable indicators of ecosystem health. The challenges associated with the morphological identification of larvae invoke the use of DNA barcoding for species determination. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene is regularly used for species identification but faces limitations, such as similar sequences in closely related species. To overcome this, we explored the use of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) region in addition to COI for Diamesa larvae identification. Therefore, this study employs a combination of molecular markers alongside traditional morphological identification to enhance species discrimination. In total, 129 specimens were analysed, of which 101 were sampled from a glacier-fed stream in Rotmoostal, and the remaining 28 from spring-fed streams in the neighbouring valleys of Königstal and Timmelstal. This study reveals the inadequacy of utilizing single COI or ITS genes for comprehensive species differentiation within the genus Diamesa. However, the combined application of COI and ITS markers significantly enhances species identification resolution, surpassing the limitations faced by traditional taxonomists. Notably, this is evident in cases involving morphologically indistinguishable species, such as Diamesa latitarsis and Diamesa modesta. It highlights the potential of employing a multi-marker approach for more accurate and reliable Diamesa species identification. This method can be a powerful tool for identifying Diamesa species, shedding light on their remarkable adaptations to extreme environments and the impacts of environmental changes on their populations.Grantová agentura České republiky 20-00892L Život na okraji: Limity výskytu larev hmyz

In: Business systems research : the journal of Society for advancing innovation and research in economy. Záhreb : IRENET, Society for advancing innovation and research in economy, 2024. ISSN 1847-9375. Vol. 15, no. 1 (2024), pp. 22-45.The transformation of business and the economy is a key business problem, and its importance was further heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the increased pressure on enterprises. Hence, the digital readiness of their business will likely determine its future competitiveness in the field. Objectives: The paper addresses the issue of digital readiness for business, with the aim of examining similarities and differences in the digital readiness of European Union countries. The main focus is on identifying the changes during the first two years of the pandemic. Methods/Approach: We conducted a factor analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis based on selected indicators. The results revealed some significant differences. Results: While the countries that lead in digital readiness remained the same, there were relatively large differences in the classification of other EU countries. Some countries, such as Latvia or Slovenia, significantly improved in many aspects of digital readiness during the pandemic. On the other hand, Bulgaria and Romania are still included in the same cluster, representing an overall low digital readiness. Conclusion: Enterprises in more developed countries also have a higher level of digital readiness. Although COVID-19 had a positive impact on digital readiness in some less developed countries, the impact is only partial, indicating a need for stronger actions to bridge the digital divide at the EU level. These findings provide a hopeful outlook, suggesting that with the right actions, the digital divide in the EU can be effectively bridged.VEGA 1/0411/24 Vplyv ekonomických nástrojov verejnej politiky na digitálnu pripravenosť podnikov APVV-20-0338 Hybné sily ekonomického rastu a prežitie firiem v šiestej K-vln

Vol. 23, no. 2 (2024), pp. 289-305.The EU is currently Ukraine’s largest trading partner. The European market is characterized by high solvency and capacity, which creates many opportunities for Ukrainian exporters. The article examines the transformation of trade flows between the European Union and Ukraine in the context of increased security risks caused by Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine. An analysis of the main changes in the structure of Ukraine’s foreign trade was carried out, including the reorientation of export and import flows to EU markets. A significant unevenness in the concentration of Ukrainian exports to EU countries was revealed, which makes its economy more vulnerable to external shocks and points to the available opportunities for increasing exports to other EU member states. An assessment of the economic benefits and challenges faced by both sides was carried out. On the basis of the conducted SWOT analysis, opportunities for trade cooperation between the EU and Ukraine in the conditions of transformation of trade flows were identified.Erasmus+ 101048216 REFRAG - Regional integration: European benchmark under the challenges of global fragmentatio

Identifying patterns among tourism-oriented online communities on Facebook

In: Tourism and Hospitality. Basel : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2024. ISSN 2673-5768. Vol. 5, no. 3 (2024), pp. 830-847.The proliferation of social media has transformed how people engage in communication and community building, with platforms like Facebook becoming central to connecting individuals with shared interests. Despite the extensive formation of tourism-oriented online communities on these platforms, there is a notable lack of comprehensive studies examining their structural and managerial dynamics. This study addresses this gap by systematically analyzing fifty international tourism-focused Facebook communities to develop a novel typology based on the nature and type of information shared. The research identifies significant variations in community sizes, engagement levels, and management structures, highlighting that only 6% of these communities qualify as large, with membership exceeding one million. Contrary to common assumptions, a direct link between community size and engagement was not found, with qualitative factors like community purpose and content type being more influential. A notable correlation was observed between the number of administrators and moderators and the member count, emphasizing the importance of effective community governance. The study’s findings contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of online community dynamics and offer practical implications for tourism marketers and community managers aiming to optimize engagement strategies on social media platforms. The research sets a foundation for future exploration of the interplay between virtual community management and tourism-related discourse.VEGA 1/0136/23 Od odolnosti k udržateľnosti: vplyv údajov na udržateľný a konkurencieschopný rozvoj cestovného ruch

Role of sustained democracy in US foreign policy during presidency of Joseph R. Biden

In: Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Issues. Vilnius : Entrepreneurship and sustainability center, 2024. ISSN 2345-0282. Vol. 12, no 1 (2024), pp. 10-24.Value-based foreign policy has always been a point of controversy, and the situation is no different today. This question becomes all the more controversial in the event that its executor is to be a pre-eminent power - the United States of America. In this respect, the present is not so different from the recent past, and in the context of the great power rivalry of the USA, especially with the PRC and the Russian Federation, analogies with the Cold War are offered and often brought. It was precisely at that time that both (super)powers claimed to a certain extent that they carried out their foreign policy in accordance with their values, which they considered to be key and not in favor of the cold calculation of national interests. The choice was not binary then and it has not become so even today, and even if during the mentioned period both superpowers supported different groups in different sections and entered into conflicts under the different pretexts, neither side could actually claim the title of valuable foreign policy. Although comparisons with the Cold War are often exaggerated, indeed the newly renewed (or never ended) and growing great power rivalry shaping to a large extent the current international system, at least in the case of the US, complicates the never-ending formal commitment to supporting democracy and democratic regimes in its foreign relations. Also, on the basis of the mentioned facts, we decided to investigate this phenomenon and through the article we want to contribute to the debate about the role of democracy in international politics and foreign relations of the current J. Biden administration as a whole.APVV-20-0334 "Nie je to pravda, ale mohla by byť": Konšpiračné teórie a hoaxy v modernom vývoji Slovenska v európskom kontexte VEGA 1/0578/23 Kyberneticko-sociálne bezpečnostné hrozby v súčasnom svete: prípadová štúdia o hrozbách dezinformácií a novovznikajúcich hrozbách v spoločenskom kontext

The relation of on-ice and off-ice performance at two different performance levels in youth ice-hockey players

In: Journal of Human Kinetics. Warsaw : De Gruyter Poland, 2024. ISSN 1640-5544. No. 93 (2024), pp. 193-203.Ice hockey requires two levels of specific agility, involving different abilities, where the level of agility and their constraints might vary by the performance level. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the relationship level between on-ice and off-ice change of directional speed (COD) of youth hockey players at two performance levels. The study was conducted during the hockey season, including U16 elite players (n = 40) and U16 sub-elite players (n = 23). Both groups performed specific on-ice fitness tests (4-m acceleration, 30-m sprint, and 6 x 54-m tests, an on-ice Illinois agility test with and without a puck) and off-ice tests consisting of non-arm swing countermovement jumps (CMJs), broad jumps, and pull-ups. Pearson correlation showed that the acceleration performance of elite players was related to the CMJ (r = −0.46) and the broad jump (r = −0.31). Sub-elite players showed stronger dependence of the 30-m sprint on the CMJ (r = −0.77) and the broad jump (r = −0.43), the relation of pulls ups (r = −0.62) and the CMJ (r = −0.50) to the 6 x 54-m test, yet no association to acceleration. Elite players differ between off-ice and on-ice performance constraints, where their skating sprint is less related to their vertical and horizontal take-off abilities than in sub-elite players. Sub-elite players’ off-ice power determines their sprint and repeated sprint performance. COD performance of elite and sub-elite players is based on different conditioning constraints.Univerzita Karlova PRIMUS22/HUM/019 Vývoj testů svalové síly dolní končetiny pro praktické využití u pokročilých metod silového tréninku Univerzita Karlova UNCE24/SSH/012 Univerzitní centrum pro rozvoj lidské motoriky a ovlivňování motivace k pohybovým aktivitá
