Is there a connection between ESG scores and a company’s profitability? Empirical evidence on selected Stoxx Europe 600 firms
In: Investment Management and Financial Innovations = Investment Management & Financial Innovations. Sumy : Business Perspectives, 2024. ISSN 1810-4967. Vol. 21, no. 3 (2024), pp. 344-356.This study scrutinizes the potential correlation between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores and the profitability of firms listed in the selected STOXX Europe 600 index. Utilizing panel regression analysis, the study examines data from 385 non-financial companies over the period 2017 to 2021, correlating CSRHub's ESG scores and selected financial variables with corporate profitability measured by ROA. The investigation reveals that, overall, ESG scores do not have a significant impact on profitability, except for the ESG-community sub-score, which shows a slight negative influence. Thus, this paper partially supports studies that show a negative correlation between ESG and profitability, even though such results are in the minority in the literature. The overall results suggest that while ESG scores may reflect a company's ethical stance, they are not a predominant factor influencing its profitability. However, this is not the case for leverage, as the importance of capital structure for profitability is confirmed.VEGA 1/0579/21 Výskum determinantov a paradigiem finančného manažmentu v kontexte pandémie COVID-1
The effect of lengthening of the percutaneous implant in the surgical treatment of Th-L ankylosed spine fractures: 4 segment fixation versus 5 to 8 segment fixation
In: Bratislava Medical Journal = Bratislavské lekárske listy. Bratislava : Comenius University in Bratislava : Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave, 2024. ISSN 0006-9248. Roč. 125, č. 12 (2024), s. 844-850.BACKGROUND: Fractures of thoracolumbar spine in the field of ankylosing diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) can by surgically treated with miniinvasive posterior transpedicular fixation. The exact length of implant is the subject of several studies. In our study, we retrospectively evaluated the treatment of B3 fractures of the ankylosed thoracolumbar spine with use a shorter versus longer implant, always with 8 screws.
MetHODS: A total of 46 patients were included in the study (36 men and 10 women). Sixteen patients had AS and 30 patients had DISH. Patients treated between 2018 and 2022 with minimally invasive dorsal transpedicular fixation using 8 transpedicular screws were included in this study. We compared two groups where the first consisted of patients operated on with fixation of a maximum of 4 segments and the second group of patients consisted of patients in whom longer stabilization was used, at least 5 to 8 segments, with skipping of some vertebra between screws. We compared the effect of fixation length on reduction and retention before surgery, after surgery, and after 6 and 12 months. We evaluated the effect of reduction and retention on the basis of differences in the measurement of the Cobb angle and the angle, which we called “vege”, which was formed by dislocation of the fracture. Furthermore, we monitored demographic data, the length of surgery, the number of complications, the number of concomitant injuries, the presence of a neurological deficit, and the result was assessed by the AO Spine PROST questionnaire.
RESULTS: In the entire group of 46 patients, the difference in the “vege” angle was significant (p<0.001). When comparing the reduction between the groups with short and longer fixation, the difference was not significant (p=0.829). The difference of the Cobb angle before and after the surgery in the comparison between the two groups did not show a statistically significant difference (p=0.434). Measurements of the Cobb angle bisegmentally after 6 and 12 months showed a progressive change in terms of kyphotization, which was smaller in the group with longer fixation, this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.709). Complete reduction was achieved in the group with short fixation vs 75% vs 63.3% with longer fixation (p-0.739). At the check-up after 6 months, all incomplete intraoperative reductions were spontaneously reduced.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study, we could conclude that both used constructions are comparable in terms of treatment results. It can be observed that longer fixation is more resistant to kyphotization at 6 and 12 months, but we would need a larger group of patients to confirm this hypothesis. In all incomplete reduced fractures through the surgery, complete reduction after verticalization occurred within 6 months in both groups. The angle of reduction was greater in the group with longer fixation, but the difference was not significant (Tab. 6, Fig. 8, Ref. 31)
Graphical representation of data prediction potential: correlation graphs and correlation chains
In: The visual computer : international journal of computer graphics. Berlin : Springer, 2024. ISSN 0178-2789. Vol. 40, no. 10 (2024), pp. 6969-6982.The correlation of the set of attributes is a crucial statistical value for the measuring of prediction potential present in a dataset. The correlation coefficient, which measures the correlation between the values of two attributes, can be used in order to measure the prediction potential between two-element subsets of a dataset containing a high number of attributes. In this way two common summary visualizations of prediction potential in datasets are formed—correlation matrices and correlation heatmaps. Both of these visualizations are focused on the presentation of correlation between pair of attributes but not much more regarding the context of correlations in the dataset. The main objective of this article is the design and implementation of graphical models usable in a visual representation of data prediction potential—correlation graphs and correlation chains—which emphasize the pseudo-transitivity of prediction potential in a dataset
Indications of reluctance to submit to tyranny in literature of 1960s
In: Conversatoria Litteraria : międzynarodowy rocznik naukowy. Siedlce : Uniwersytet Przyrodniczo-Humanistyczny w Siedlcach, 2024. ISSN 1897-1423. Roč. 18 (2024), s. 205-218.The work explores indications of reluctance to submit to tyranny in theliterature of the 1960s, focusing on the works of authors Dominik Tatarka, RudolfSloboda, and Ján Johanides. The study builds on the research of Joseph Caroll, who argues that readers can indirectly participate in egalitarian social dynamicsthrough literature. Theobjective of the work is to observe how the rebellion aga-inst the aesthetics of socialist realism is depicted in these works (whether expli-citly or implicitly), and to determine if the conclusions align with those of thementioned literary scholar.Plán obnovy a odolnosti SR 09I03-03-V02-00011 Štipendiá pre excelentných PhD. študentov a študentky (R1) - UMB v Banskej Bystric
Primary education teachers' subjectively perceived workload, job satisfaction, and emotional exhaustion
In: The New Educational Review. Toruń : Wydawnictwo Adam Marszałek, 2024. ISSN 1732-6729. No. 76 (2024), pp. 165-177.The study presents the results of quantitative research aimed at measuring primary education teachers’ job satisfaction (JS), subjectively perceived workload (SPW) and emotional exhaustion (EE). The research sample consisted of 249 teachers. The highest satisfaction was with the work, the highest workload in diagnostics and assessment, and emotional exhaustion was not marked. Correlations confirmed relations between satisfaction and workload (-0.237), satisfaction and emotional exhaustion (-0.463), and workload and emotional exhaustion (0.462). Mediation analysis indicated that satisfaction influenced the relationship between workload and emotional exhaustion. Results point to teachers’ well-being and may help create interventions to improve the working environment. Legal union of a same-sex couple in the Slovak Republic and the scope of recognition of such unions validly established abroad
In: Legestic. Nitrianske Hrnčiarovce : HACCP Consulting, 2024. ISSN 2730-0641. Vol. 2 (2024), pp. [1-6].The paper focuses on the issue of legal regulation of unions of same-sex couples under the conditions of the Slovak legal order. The author notes that within the Slovak Republic there is no equivalent of the institution of marriage for cohabiting persons of the same sex. It is further specified on the issues of recognition of marriages of same-sex couples, respectively registered partnerships established abroad. The aim of the contribution is to summarize and stimulate a wider discussion on the issues addressed and to point out the fact that human rights must be guaranteed in a state of law, while their guarantee can be interpreted as a security granted to all and the rejection of discrimination. The lack of legal recognition for same-sex unions not only presents social challenges but also practical hindrances in daily affairs such as healthcare, taxation, and social security benefits, which can often be predicated on marital status. It is crucial to consider the implications of such legal gaps on the well-being of individuals who are part of same-sex couples, as well as their children. The evolving social fabric and changing attitudes towards same-sex relationships necessitate a reassessment of existing legal frameworks to ensure inclusivity and equality under the law. The continued efforts and discussions within the Slovak Republic highlight a growing awareness and potential for legislative change that aligns with the European consensus on human rights. Moreover, the exploration of legal avenues for recognition of same-sex unions must consider the dynamic nature of family structures in the contemporary context, where diversity in family units is becoming increasingly normative

Vyučovanie zimných športov na základných školách cez inovatívne učebné materiály
In: Studia kinanthropologica : vědecký časopis pro kinantropologii. České Budějovice : Jihočeská univerzita v Českých Budějovicích, 2024. ISSN 1213-2101. Vol. 25, no. 2 (2024), pp. 73-79.The aim of the study is to provide information on how primary school teachers perceive the quality, conditions and possibilities of professional education in the field of winter sports teaching. We focused our findings on a sample of 229 respondents in order to obtain an answer to the questions, in particular, whether the opinions of men and women differ regarding the need for professional education for teaching winter sports and what is their demand for a possible innovation of teaching materials for teaching winter sports. Through statistical analysis (Chi-square), we found that there is a significant difference in the approach to this field between male and female teachers, especially from the point of view of interest in further education, in the way of obtaining new information and knowledge, and also in the demand for the format of study material. From the point of view of teachers’ requests for a possible innovation of teaching materials for teaching winter sports, we found that there was a significant group of respondents (22.94 %) who have a negative attitude towards this area (the answer is "I don’t need"). Of course, the remaining part of the teachers want innovation to take place in this area as well and they present the demand that the teaching formats in particular be adapted to the current modern information and communication age, and they request that the transfer of information from the content of the curriculum be transformed into a mobile environment.KEGA 032UMB-4/2022 Inovatívne učebné materiály pre učiteľov telesnej a športovej výchovy na základných školách so zameraním na zimné sezónne pohybové činnost
Manipulation techniques and their impact on public opinion and electoral integrity in the USA
In: Politické vedy = journal for political science, modern history, international relations, security studies : časopis pre politológiu, najnovšie dejiny, medzinárodné vzťahy, bezpečnostné štúdiá. Banská Bystrica : Vydavateľstvo Univerzity Mateja Bela - Belianum, 2024. ISSN 1335-2741. Roč. 27, č. 2 (2024), s. 122-143.The study focused on the phenomenon of political marketing, political communication, and their application in world politics during the post-truth era with an emphasis on the territory of the United States of America. The aim of the study was to identify several aspects of these disciplines during the dynamic technological progress which makes it possible to develop misleading manipulative techniques and spread disinformation. The emerging issues of the current state of the online sphere such as abuse of personal data for one's own political gain, dissemination of false news that radicalizes the public and threats to the security of free and fair elections and a democracy relate to other concerns such as a polarized society and electoral integrity. Politics has always been, and will continue to be, an infinite number of shades of grey. Absolute honesty and elimination of negative advertising or propaganda is neither realistic nor desirable, though we consider it important to strive for more ethical election campaigns. The conclusion of this article can be applied to other studies that will continue the research on the given topic and will respond to the current challenges of democracy
Cubic graphs with colouring defect 3
In: The electronic journal of combinatorics. [s. l.] : [s. n.], 2024. ISSN 1077-8926. Vol. 31, no. 2 (2024), pp. 1-32.The colouring defect of a cubic graph is the smallest number of edges left uncovered by any set of three perfect matchings. While 3-edge-colourable graphs have defect 0, those that cannot be 3-edge-coloured (that is, snarks) are known to have defect at least 3. In this paper we focus on the structure and properties of snarks with defect 3. For such snarks we develop a theory of reductions similar to standard reductions of short cycles and small cuts in general snarks. We prove that every snark with defect 3 can be reduced to a snark with defect 3 which is either nontrivial (cyclically 4-edge-connected and of girth at least 5) or to one that arises from a nontrivial snark of defect greater than 3 by inflating a vertex lying on a suitable 5-cycle to a triangle. The proofs rely on a detailed analysis of Fano flows associated with triples of perfect matchings leaving exactly three uncovered edges. In the final part of the paper we discuss application of our results to the conjectures of Berge and Fulkerson, which provide the main motivation for our research.APVV-19-0308 Výnimočné štruktúry v diskrétnej matematike
