    Factors affecting financial performance in the waste management industry: A comparative analysis of pre- and post- COVID-19 periods

Vol. 17, no. 4 (2024), pp. 195-218.The linear economic model is unsustainable for a long time, so the transition to a circular economy seems inevitable. By adopting a new Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU is taking concrete steps in this direction and identifying indicators to measure progress. In this context, businesses operating in the waste management industry are among the key actors helping to meet the objectives of circular economy policies. This study aims to identify and compare the determinants of the financial performance of companies in the NACE 38 industry and to quantify their impact on ROA and ROS in 2019 and 2022. Pearson's R was used to select the variables we examined using principal components analysis as one of the methods used in exploratory factor analysis. Linear regression analysis was employed to explain the influence of the extracted factors on changes in ROA and ROS. For 2019, we extracted five factors (capital structure, business policy, current assets' efficiency, operational activity, and working capital management) that explain 79.2% of the variability in profitability. For 2022, we extracted six factors (liquidity management, current assets' efficiency, asset structure, volume of available resources, capital structure and operational activity), which explain 84.17% of the variability of the variables.     Covert simultaneous post-editing in online assessment of students' sight translation

No. 24 (2024), pp. 12-27.This first attempt aims to determine the extent of students’ covert use of machine translation (MT) in the online assessment of their sight translation, the strategies of such use, and its signs. The study is based on the analysis of target texts (TT) of specialised online sight translation from Ukrainian into English by 13 BA and 10 MA students. The procedure involved the comparison of the students' TTs with their MT counterparts. Signs of covert MT were found in 46% of the BA and 30% of the MA students’ translations. The main method of this covert MT use is "simultaneous post-editing", i.e., the immediate oral post-editing of the MT text generated by the students on their screens and hidden from the assessor, while they deliver their supposedly original TTs. Simultaneous post-editing strategies range from replacing individual lexemes with their synonyms, adding and deleting elements, changing the syntactic functions of words or phrases, rearranging sentence fragments, transforming their structure, to applying several of these strategies simultaneously. Other methods of concealment include alternating MT systems in translating the same source text, as well as artificially slowing down the process of reading the TT from the screen, accompanied by pauses in the relevant text fragments to perform certain mental operations. In order to increase objectivity, the author recommends a delayed assessment of students' online interpreting recordings. The research perspective is to study the didactic potential of simultaneous post-editing as a procedure for developing general interpreting skills

Vol. 34, no. 2 (2024), pp. 139-158.The presented 14th part of the series includes 24 new records of vascular plants from the territory of Central Europe. A first record of Barbarea stricta in northern Croatia, as well as single records of Lindernia procumbens in Transcarpathian Ukraine and Limonium hungaricum in Poland was found. In Hungary, 4 adventive species, Diospyros lotus, Salvia farinacea, Torilis nodosa and Vicia lutea, and one autochthonous species, Ventenata dubia are mentioned. Achillea oxyloba subsp. schurii, Bartsia alpina, Doronicum carpaticum, Erigeron alpinus, Gentiana nivalis, G. punctata, Hedysarum hedysaroides and Pinguicula alpina were reported from Maramureş Mts in northern Romania. No. 5 (2024), pp. 82-90.The study focuses on identifying hidden meanings in Vanda Rozenbergová’s short story collection called Freedom for Pheasants (2011). Being based on the concept of hermeneutic circle, the study aims to identify places of indeterminacy in the book, focusing especially on metaphors. The primary focus is on the meaning of the metaphor of birds, while relying on the theoretical solutions of Paul Ricoeur, George Lakoff and other authors, who have been dealing with this issue. It also follows up on the solutions of cognitive linguistics, especially the theory of prototypes. Č. 1 (2024), s. 7-20.The article examines the connection between folklore tradition and linguistic tradition, which is observed in folklore texts of all genres and different degrees of written mastering. The relevance of the article relates to combining the perspective of folklore and linguistic tradition when comparing fragments of linguistic worldviews. The author’s arguments is based on the fact that all known folklore texts published by folklore collectors reflect the choice of representative versions in accordance with the native speaker’s idea of the linguistic means exemplary use in a certain folklore genre. Thus the folklore tradition is reflected in the written form not only spontaneously, but as a value understood by the publisher, presented both in direct linguistic reflection and in its reinterpretation. The author compares Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Slovak versions of famous tales about animals and proves that the linguistic worldview as reflected in the language of a certain way of perception and structure of the world can be traced in its systemic and at the same time fragmentary component of the folklore text. In this case, the specificity of the folklore tradition in the linguistic worldview allows us to identify common and distinctive folklore, linguistic, figurative, genre, text-forming standards. The author comes to the conclusion about synthetism and conceptual axiological aspect of comparison, which receives an intercultural interpretation

    Solvent controlled generation of spin active polarons in two-dimensional material under UV light irradiation

Vol. 146, no. 22 (2024), pp. 15010-15018.Polarons belong to a class of extensively studied quasiparticles that have found applications spanning diverse fields, including charge transport, colossal magnetoresistance, thermoelectricity, (multi)ferroism, optoelectronics, and photovoltaics. It is notable, though, that their interaction with the local environment has been overlooked so far. We report an unexpected phenomenon of the solvent-induced generation of polaronic spin active states in a two-dimensional (2D) material fluorographene under UV light. Furthermore, we present compelling evidence of the solvent-specific nature of this phenomenon. The generation of spin-active states is robust in acetone, moderate in benzene, and absent in cyclohexane. Continuous wave X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy experiments revealed a massive increase in the EPR signal for fluorographene dispersed in acetone under UV-light irradiation, while the system did not show any significant signal under dark conditions and without the solvent. The patterns appeared due to the generation of transient magnetic photoexcited states of polaronic character, which encompassed the net 1/2 spin moment detectable by EPR. Advanced ab initio calculations disclosed that polarons are plausibly formed at radical sites in fluorographene which interact strongly with acetone molecules in their vicinity. Additionally, we present a comprehensive scenario for multiplication of polaronic spin active species, highlighting the pivotal role of the photoinduced charge transfer from the solvent to the electrophilic radical centers in fluorographene.     Effectiveness of an innovative athletic program at the 1st stage of primary school

Vol. 9, no. 2 (2024), pp. 12-23.The aim of the experiment was to test the effectiveness of an innovative program in grade 3 of elemantary school and to compare the results with a traditional teaching program for lower stage of elementary school. The experiment took place at the Ďumbierska primry School in Banská Bystrica. One class was randomly assigned as an experimental group, in which teaching in the form of an innovative programme took place, and the other as a control group, in which teaching in the traditional way took place. Subsequently, the application of the innovative programme was carried out in the scope of 9 lessons. A 5-point scoring scale was developed to assess athletic skills. SPSS Statistic statistical program was used to detect statistical significance and the results were evaluated at α ≤ 0.05 level. The pupils of the experimental group achieved a significant improvement in sports skills compared to the control group, which was confirmed by calculating the statistical significance. The most significant improvement was recorded in short distance running, where pupils of the experimental group improved by 32%. In short distance running, the most significant differences between the experimental and control group were also recorded, by 20%. In the standing long jump, an improvement of 23.5% was recorded, with a more significant improvement of 19% compared to the control group. The least significant differences were recorded in cricket ball throwing, where the experimental group improved by 16.75%, 13% more than the control group. Based on the results, we recommend incorporating more innovative exercises, exercises in pairs and movement games, following the methodological procedures, incorporating more teaching aids to make the lesson more varied and fun for the pupils

Vol. 15, no. 3 (2024), pp. 837-870.Research background: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms support industrial Internet of Things (IoT)-based big data and enterprise asset management in multiphysics simulation environments by industrial big data processing, modeling, and monitoring, enabling business organizational and managerial practices. Machine learning-based decision support and edge generative AI sensing systems can reduce persistent labor shortages and job vacancies and power productivity growth and labor market dynamics, shaping career pathways and facilitating occupational transitions by skill gap identification and labor-intensive manufacturing job automation by path planning and spatial cognition algorithms, furthering theoretical implications for management sciences. Generative AI fintech, machine learning algorithms, and behavioral analytics can assist multi-layered payment and transaction processing screening with regard to authorized push payment, account takeover, and synthetic identity frauds, flagging suspicious activities and combating economic crimes by rigorous verification processes. Purpose of the article: We show that edge device management functionalities of cloud industrial IoT and virtual robotic simulation technologies configure plant production and route planning processes across cyber-physical production and industrial automation systems in multi-cloud immersive 3D environments, leading to tangible business outcomes by reinforcement learning and convolutional neural networks. Labor-augmenting automation and generative AI technologies can impact employment participation, increase wage and wealth inequality, and lead to potential job displacement and massive labor market disruptions. The deep learning capabilities of generative AI fintech in terms of adaptive behavioral analytics and credit scoring mechanisms can enhance financial transaction behaviors and algorithmic trading returns, identify fraudulent payment transactions swiftly, and improve financial forecasts, leading to customized investment recommendations and well-informed financial decisions. Methods: Machine learning-based study selection process and text mining systematic review management software and tools leveraged include Abstrackr, CADIMA, Colandr, DistillerSR, EPPI-Reviewer, JBI SUMARI, METAGEAR package for R, SluRp, and SWIFT-Active Screener. Such reference management systems are harnessed for methodologically rigorous evidence synthesis, study selection and characteristic extraction, predictive document classification, machine learning-based citation and record screening, bias assessment, article retrieval automation, and document classification and prioritization. Findings & value added: Industrial IoT and 3D augmented reality technologies can create business value by streamlining virtual product and remote asset management across extended reality-based navigation and robotic autonomous systems in smart factory environments by generative AI and machine learning algorithms, articulating business organizational level and theory of management implications. 3D simulation and operational modeling tools can execute and complete complex cognitive task-oriented and knowledge economy jobs, producing first-rate quality outputs swiftly while leading to unemployment spells, labor market disruptions, job displacement losses, and reduced earnings by machine learning clustering and spatial cognition algorithms.
