Students' well-being and academic engagement: a multivariate analysis of the influencing factors

Vol. 12, no. 15 (2024), pp. 1-19.This paper aims to identify the factors that are positively or negatively impacting students’ well-being and their academic engagement. We used partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using the data collected through a questionnaire from four countries: Romania, Turkey, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. The model includes seven factors that influence the well-being of students and indirectly their academic engagement: stressors in the students’ lives; professors’ support; social support from family and friends; the students’ perceived satisfaction in their lives; engaging in activities during their leisure time; self-exploration regarding their careers; and environmental exploration regarding their careers. The results show that all factors, except for stressors and environmental exploration regarding their careers, positively influence the students’ well-being and thus their academic engagement. Complementarity of onomastic and sociolinguistic research of the linguistic landscape in Slovakia

Vol. 68 (2024), pp. 43-59.The paper is devoted to the mutual complementarity of onomastic and sociolinguistic research of the linguistic landscape in Slovakia. The paper focuses on the analysis of anthroponyms as part of memorial plaques, official boards of local government, as well as advertising billboards and banners. A large part of onomastics has been focusing on research of urbanonymy, mainly anthroponymic dedi- cation titles and their naming process after 1989, as well as on company names — logonyms. Unlike onomastics, sociolinguistics focuses also on visual and semiotic aspects of logonyms. Anthroponyms represent a part of graduation tableaux, which enter the linguistic landscape before the graduation exams. Up to the present day, the study of gravestones as an area of the linguistic landscape has been only narrowly explored. In a bilingual environment, they pose a very colorful sample not only from a diachronic but also from a synchronic perspective. Qualitative analysis of graph problem solving with ChatGPT

S. 43-55.The ChatGPT tool has become one of the most popular applications of artificial intelligence, which is used to obtain answers to questions, but especially to solve tasks from various fields. We have encountered opinions that some answers of the ChatGPT are accurate, and others are wrong, or that students will not be able to solve tasks due to the availability of the ChatGPT tool, which will lead to a degradation of the student's thinking. We asked ourselves a research question: "Does the solution of graph tasks with ChatGPT contribute to the degradation of the student's thinking of the 1st and 2nd year of gymnasiums". We focused on solving graph tasks for the "Junior" category of the iBobor competition. These tasks are: "Pedigree" from 2012/13 and " Photos on the social network' from 2015/16. We gradually presented the solution to both tasks. Each task was solved by several students, in Informatics methodology subject, who worked together and thus 5 experiments were created with the aim of answering the questions specified for the qualitative analysis and answering the research question. We specified questions for qualitative analysis: Do the students understand the assignment? Can the assignment as formulated for the student be used as an assignment for ChatGPT? How should we phrase questions for ChatGPT to get the expected type of response? Is ChatGPT's answer to our questions always, correct? Does entering a task for ChatGPT in Slovak and English language lead to the same answers? Based on the results of the experiments, we were able to gradually formulate the answers: It is essential that students clearly understand the assignment. We perceive the importance of the teacher in the analysis of the task, specification of details and communication with the students. We have shown that it is necessary to divide a complex assignment into parts. Skill in asking questions needs to be acquired. ChatGPT is a new and dynamically changing tool. Therefore, it is necessary to work with this tool and perceive the "learning" feature of this tool. The ChatGPT response is not always correct. The necessity of knowing how to solve tasks correctly was confirmed for us. This is necessary so that we can judge whether ChatGPT responded correctly or not. Entering a task for ChatGPT in Slovak and English can lead to different answers. We interpret this as the student's ability to better formulate an assignment in English than a "machine" translation from the Slovak language does. Based on the qualitative analysis, we can conclude that the teacher and the student, when solving tasks with ChatGPT, need: understand the task assignment in detail, be able to formulate the tasks more consistently for ChatGPT and possibly reformulate or supplement this assignment and be able to correctly solve graph tasks so that we can verify the correctness of the ChatGPT solution. It follows from the above that we must reject the hypothesis in the research question. We have shown that student's thinking does not degrade. No full textTáto publikácia je pokusom o ucelenejší analyticko-syntetický pohľad na utečenecké vlny, ktorým čelilo Slovensko v 20. storočí (presnejšie v prvej polovici 20. storočia). Je zameraná na objasnenia pôvodu utečeneckých migrácií a vysporiadania sa Slovenska s nimi v uvedenom období. V jednotlivých príspevkoch sú skúmané a interpretované podnety a podoby jednotlivých utečeneckých vĺn smerujúcich na (cez) Slovensko, sú v nich analyzované prípravné a realizačné procesy v rámci prijatia/neprijatia/vyhostenia utečencov na Slovensku, štátno-bezpečnostné opatrenia, ako aj zapojenie domácich štátnych i mimovládnych inštitúcií a medzinárodných organizácií. Promoting cognitive brain health and sustained attention in adults and older adults through e-games

Vol. 15, no. 3 (2024), pp. 1-22.The ability to learn new skills as an adult, cognitive stimulation in the ageing process, and a cognitively active lifestyle are of interest to experts in education, public health, and social studies. The game Scrabble, with its enjoyable nature, has gained recognition as an educational resource that facilitates the acquisition and preservation of vocabulary, thereby augmenting both practical and cognitive abilities. In this study, a descriptive quantitative research design was implemented to assess attentional capacity using the Bourdon Attention Test, specifically utilizing the BoPr (Prague Square Modification of the CSAT), within the cohort of Scrabble League e-players and the broader general population. With a focus on promoting cognitive brain health, this study presents a comparison of sustained attention levels between these groups. A sample of N = 60 participants (divided into Scrabble e-players who participate in a league [N = 30], and a comparison group of the general population [N = 30]) underwent a study comparing their levels of attention achieved in the Bourdon test. A significant difference (p = 0.050) was found in their attention span, favoring the league e-players. The results suggest that Scrabble e-games can potentially improve the cognitive well-being and attention of adults and older individuals. However, further investigation is necessary to understand their capabilities fully. Utilizing Scrabble in the realms of adult education, gerontology, and medical practice could be beneficial for enhancing cognitive brain health

No full textSúbor obsahuje prepis pôvodného archívneho dokumentu kázní Izáka Abrahamidesa Hrochotského z rokov 1600 – 1601 prevažne v slovakizovanej češtine. Na automatickú transkripciu dokumentu v nástroji Transkribus bol použitý model Abraham model 18 (ID: 61347) s priemernou chybovosťou CER na overovacej sade 6,4 %. Časť dokumentu v rozsahu 25 % slúžiaca na tvorbu modelu bola verifikovaná a korigovaná podľa digitalizátov.The collection contains a transcription of the original archival document of Isaac Abrahamides Hrochotius sermons from the years 1600 – 1601, mostly in Slovakized Czech. The Abraham model 18 (ID: 61347) was used for automatic transcription of the document in the Transkribus tool, with an average Character Error Rate (CER) of 6.4 % on the validation set.
