Demographic analysis and resource allocation in humanitarian aid: a case study of age-specific service provision
In: Journal of Human Resource Management. Bratislava : Univerzita Komenského, 2024. ISSN 1335-3888. Vol. 27, no. 2 (2024), pp. 169-182.Purpose – The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the existing literature on humanitarian service use by Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia. In particular, it examines the patterns of service use by different demographic groups and considers the implications of these patterns for the allocation of resources.
Aims(s) – The principal aim is to analyse the variations in service utilisation across different demographic groups and service categories. Secondary objectives include the identification of trends in service delivery over time and the drawing of implications for future humanitarian response strategies.
Design/methodology/approach – The study employs a quantitative, cross-sectional methodology, analysing data from a charitable organisation situated in the Slovakian midlands. The service delivery records of 1,033 cases, encompassing seven categories, were examined over the period from November 2023 to March 2024. The data analysis comprised descriptive statistics, chisquare tests and time series analysis.
Findings – The results revealed a significant gender disparity, with women utilizing 73.3% of the services in question. With regard to age, the 45-60 age group constituted the largest proportion of service users (39.5%). The most frequently provided services were food assistance and hygiene support. The time series analysis revealed a peak in November 2023, followed by a gradual decline.
Limitations of the study - The study is limited by its focus on a single organisation and region, which restricts the potential for generalisation. A five-month study period may not be sufficiently long to capture long-term trends or seasonal changes.
Originality/value - The study provides evidence-based insights for more targeted and effective resource allocation in refugee assistance and contributes to the growing body of literature on demographic analysis in humanitarian contexts.APVV-22-0090 Uplatnenie behaviorálnej ekonómie v mapovaní preferencií v oblastiach bývania, zamestnania a dopravnej mobility

Determinants of attrition (drop-out) in the teaching profession and novice teachers' perceptions
In: Slavonic pedagogical studies journal : the scientific educational journal. Nitra : Slovenská Vzdelávacia a Obstarávacia, 2024. ISSN 1339-8660. Roč. 13, č. 2 (2024), s. 50-62.One of the key factors affecting the quality of primary education is the shortage of teachers. This is partly due to the declining interest in the profession among young people, and partly due to the increasing attrition of qualified teachers, either leaving the profession or transferring to other schools—commonly referred to as drop-out. The professional group most affected by this issue are novice teachers. In this paper, we present the results of research aimed at collecting and analyzing the experiences of novice teachers as they enter the primary education profession. Another goal of this research is to stimulate professional discussion and further inquiry into the issue of drop-out among novice teachers in our country. The questionnaire, which was created by modifying a graphics card, uses a method that gathers responses from novice teachers in the monitored categories on a 5-point scale. The categories represent the roles teachers assume in various educational situations. The findings reveal differences in teachers' perceptions and experiences related to the monitored categories. The category that received the most negative evaluation is 'Broader Social Context'. Novice teachers give positive feedback to the categories within the interactive level of socialization. The research is part of the VEGA project 1/0415/22 focused on research into subjectively perceived difficulty of teachers' professional activities in relation to their life satisfaction.VEGA 1/0415/22 Subjektívne vnímaná náročnosť profesijných činností učiteľov verzus ich životná spokojnos

In: Acta aerarii publici : vedecký časopis Ekonomickej fakulty Univerzity Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici. Banská Bystrica : Vydavateľstvo Univerzity Mateja Bela - Belianum, 2024. ISSN 1336-8818. Roč. 21, č. 2 (2024), s. 54-63.The aim of the paper is to examine, based on the results of a questionnaire survey, the perception compared to trust in mortgage insurance by respondents, classifying possible deviations depending on selected demographic factors such as age, gender, education and permanent residence. We assume that the perception and trust of respondents in mortgage insurance are influenced by their level of financial literacy, which we determined through theoretical questions in the questionnaire survey. We also analyzed selected aspects of insurance, such as the price of insurance, the scope of coverage, the reputation of the insurance company and the financial situation of the respondents, which influence the decision-making of respondents when choosing mortgage insurance

Consumer attitudes towards corporate social responsibility in the banking sector
In: Acta aerarii publici : vedecký časopis Ekonomickej fakulty Univerzity Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici. Banská Bystrica : Vydavateľstvo Univerzity Mateja Bela - Belianum, 2024. ISSN 1336-8818. Roč. 21, č. 1 (2024), s. 44-58.Today, socially responsible businesses are gaining popularity because of their long-term benefits to consumers, businesses, and society. Corporate social responsibility can be seen as a commitment to improving the public good through voluntary business practices and using corporate resources. The company must fulfill such a social function. The main objective of the paper is to identify the importance of individual banking activities in the context of CSR from the customer's point of view and then to examine the CSR activities in the selected bank. In our contribution, we present two types of research: primary consumer research and the second qualitative corporate research from secondary sources conducted at a specific bank. The responses indicate that corporate social responsibility and its implementation by banks have a significant impact on consumers' perception of the bank and on building a competitive advantage in the marketplace.VEGA 1/0479/23 Výskum cirkulárneho spotrebiteľského správania v kontexte STP marketingového model
Profesijná pripravenosť učiteľov stredných pedagogických škôl v oblasti implementácie prierezových tém do vyučovania
In: Lifelong Learning = Celoživotní vzdělávání. Brno : Mendelova univerzita v Brně, 2024. ISSN 1804-526X. Vol. 14, no. 1 (2024), pp. 31-63.The study analyses the issue of professional preparation and education of teachers of selected secondary pedagogical schools in Slovakia in the field of cross-curricular themes and the implementation of their content in teaching with an emphasis on the development of functional literacy and key competencies of students, which are a solid basis for lifelong learning in any area of professional and personal life. The aim of the scientific study is to analyse teachers’ attitudes and opinions on (self-)education and its necessity in the field of implementation of cross-curricular themes into teaching with the intention of developing functional literacy and key competencies of their students. We chose a non-standardised electronic questionnaire of our own design as the research instrument. The research sample consisted of 72 teachers from selected secondary pedagogical schools in Slovakia, 25 to 62 years old. We processed the collected data using Excel, and for quantitative analysis, we used mathematical and statistical methods of univariate and multivariate inductive and descriptive statistics and the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U-test from the IBM SPSS Statistics statistical software toolbox, version 19. Our findings confirmed a significant difference (p-value < 0.05) in the professional preparedness of the participants to implement the cross-curricular theme “Protection of life and health” in their own teaching, with respondents with 15 or more years of teaching experience rating their professional preparedness higher (Mdn = 3; AM = 3.25) than respondents with less than 15 years of experience (Mdn = 2; AM = 2.56). The results further showed that most of the participants in our dataset (26.4%) had received training in the implementation of the cross-curricular theme of “Presentation skills and project development” in the classroom in the past 10 years, and this interest remains with them in the future, as 66.1% of them plan to receive further training in the topic. The lowest number of participants (2.7%) participated in training on the implementation of the cross-curricular themes “Protection of life and health” and “Education for marriage and parenthood”
The use of cash and non-cash payments in selected retail businesses in the High Tatras region
In: Acta aerarii publici : vedecký časopis Ekonomickej fakulty Univerzity Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici. Banská Bystrica : Vydavateľstvo Univerzity Mateja Bela - Belianum, 2024. ISSN 1336-8818. Roč. 21, č. 2 (2024), s. 64-76.The present paper deals with the use of cash and non-cash payments in retail stores in a selected region around the High Tatras in the north of Slovakia. It presents own research partial results of payment preferences in selected individual retail outlets and selected retail stores not involved in an international chain. It was created with the intention of verifying the assumption of a disappearing need for cash. The obtained results are processed and presented for selected categories of retail outlets. The results show that most outlets are prepared to accept cash and non-cash payments from their customers, but some stores accept only cash. The role of cash varies by transaction type and consumer profile. The use of cash or electronic payment varies depending on the type of transaction and the profile of the seller and the consumer. We focus on retail stores preferences
From self-awareness to self-learning: Developing reflective competencies of future teachers through simulation strategies
In: South Eastern European Journal of Public Health : SEEJPH. Sheridan : Uphills Publishers, 2024. ISSN 2197-5248. Vol. 25, no. S2 (2024), pp. 3074-3080.The paper explores the development of reflective competencies in future teachers by using simulation strategies as a tool to foster self-awareness and self-directed learning among student teachers, which are crucial for their professional and personal growth. The research aimed to assess the impact of microteaching, as a simulation strategy, on the level of reflective competencies in student teachers. Simulation strategies enable students to recognize their own responses and identify areas for improvement in their approach to learning and teaching practice. The study included 142 students from teacher training programs at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice and 198 mentor teachers. A custom-designed evaluative questionnaire in the form of a scaled survey, based on autonomous evaluation by student teachers and heteronomous evaluation by mentor teachers, was used to monitor the impact of microteaching as a simulation strategy. The questionnaire’s reliability (Cronbach's alpha) was α=0.803. In the experimental group, statistically significant differences in reflective competency levels were observed following the implementation of microteaching as a simulation strategy with reflective tools (p<0.001). However, in the control group, which engaged in microteaching without reflective tools, no statistically significant difference in reflective competencies was noted. The research findings suggest that simulation strategies not only help future teachers to better understand their strengths and weaknesses but alsoencourage active personal development, emphasizing the importance of reflective tools. This paper contributes to the discussion on innovative methods in teacher preparation and underscores the need to integrate reflective activities into the educational process.KEGA 013UPJŠ-4/2023 Implementácia simulačných stratégií rozvíjajúcich reflexívne kompetencie študentov učiteľstva do prezenčnej a dištančnej formy praktickej profesijnej prípravy
